"Listen, Billie would kill me if she knew I was telling you this, but . . . Well," Steven took a deep breath, and when he spoke, his voice trembled. "The reason I can't lend you the money is because I'm going to need every cent I've got."
"What are you talking about?" Jessica asked. The desperate tone in Steven's voice was slightly alarming.
"A baby," Steven said. "Billie's pregnant."
Jessica felt as if she had been punched in the stomach. Billie was pregnant! "My God! What are you going to do?"
"Get married. ASAP."
"When are you going to tell people?"
"I don't know. Billie and I agreed to talk about that tonight."
"Can I be in the wedding?" Jessica asked quickly.
"I think you're supposed to wait until you're asked."
She tapped her foot. "Well, I'm waiting."
"If it's okay with Billie, it's okay with me. But we don't even know what kind of wedding we're going to have yet."
Jessica eyed her brother. Steven could be a real pain sometimes. But he was a great brother, and she knew how much he and Billie loved each other. But her own experiances taught her that sometimes love wasn't enough. She hoped that things between her brother and his girlfriend - fiancee - would go smoothly, but somehow Jessica had a feeling that their lives were about to unravel. And all she could do was watch . . .
