What Ken had before: Me
What Ken has now:
The starting quarterback position
Girls fawning all over him in the halls
Athletic glory
Girls begging him to dance at parties
Scholarship offers
Girls throwing their phone numbers at him
Girls, girls, girls, girls, girls . . .
Oh, and me.
Am I the only one who sees a problem?

"Hi, Mr. Mathews," Maria said. "Is Ken there?"
"No, he's out," he responded.
Maria shot a glance at the clock, checking to make sure she hadn't read the digital numbers wrong. Ken was not a morning person.
"Where'd he go?" she blurted out.
"Well, a bunch of cheerleaders came by pretty early this morning," Mr. Mathers said. "And I haven't seen him since a little after nine . . ."
He never actually said that Ken left with the cheerleaders, she told herself. Mr. Mathews was annoyed because Maria had called him on the way he'd been treating Ken, so now he was trying to make her an insecure nutcase. That way Ken wouldn't have to dump her for another girl - she'd push him away all on her own. The guy's plan wasn't hard to see through. She just had to make sure she didn't let it work.

So Not Me
