21 Ways to Have Fun…Absolutely FREE!

Always wanted to visit Israel? Have a passion for Paris? Go to the local library and plan a dream vacation using the maps, cultural books, and travel planners to investigate your destination.

Write notecards thanking your neighbors for being "neighborly." Stick them in their doors, ring the doorbells, and watch their responses of surprise from behind a bush.

If you have snow in your part of the country, make sure you take advantage of the mud it makes when it melts. If you don't have snow, make some mud. In either case, get on some grubby clothes, grab some buds, and have a messy game of full-contact Ultimate Frisbee!

Take your family to watch Little League baseball at the park. Ask your parents if they have sports stories from when they were kids. You may be surprised!

Most libraries have movies you can check out for free. Try some of the old black-and-white ones with Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart or Ingrid Bergman.

Explore the outdoors at a different time than you normally would. Take a walk through downtown when all the shops are just opening. Check into a professionally-led night hike, the kind where you use flashlights. It's amazing how different your perspective can be!

Browse a used bookstore and reminisce about your favorite children's books. Maybe the store even has a read-aloud-to-kids time you could attend!

Organize an all-day (or night!) tournament of board games at your church. Invite people of all ages to join in on Scrabble, Sequence, Monopoly, Clue!, Risk, Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, or other favorites. You'll be amazed at how games can start conversations between different age groups!

Gather all the unmatched socks in your house and make puppets! See how many of your friends you can turn into a sock character.

Ask your parents if you and a few friends can have free reign in the kitchen for an evening. Create your own gourmet coffee/tea/hot chocolate drinks by experimenting with various spices, syrups, juices, powders, etc. Make a menu of the best concoctions (and a fun list of your worst!) and treat your parents (by cleaning up the kitchen, too).

Throw together some creative costumes on a holiday off of school (like President's Day) and go "canning." Go door-to-door in your neighborhood, just like at Halloween, but instead of asking for candy, ask for canned goods to be donated to a local food bank. No one will expect it, but everyone will love it.

Have a group of friends write "What If?" or "Would You Rather?" questions on slips of paper and put them in a bowl (for example, "What if you could only eat one food for the rest of your life?" "Would you rather not use soap or not use a hairbrush for the next 10 years?") Take turns pulling them out and answering them. You'll find out more about each other, and it's guaranteed to make you laugh.

Try to make a house of cards.

Check out a book on paper airplanes, grab some paper, and challenge your friends to some contests: coolest plane, longest-flying, even biggest dud!

Gather the family for an evening of reminiscing. Pop some popcorn, pull out the old photo albums, and laugh at pictures from your younger years.

How well do you know your hometown? Divide your friends into two groups, each group making a list of little-known sites to capture on video (the view from the tallest building) or items to bring back in person (a napkin from a local diner). Exchange lists, borrow a video camera for each group (make sure to ask parents!), and have a fun night rediscovering your town.

Learn more about your parents' hobbies. Does your mom sew? Ask her to help you make a pillowcase. Does your dad garden? Help him plant the spring seeds and chat about what it takes for them to grow well.

Attend a speech or independent movie showing at a local community college or university on a topic you're interested in. Yes, learning can be fun!

Make a mural for your wall/door/notebook/locker out of empty cereal boxes, magazine clippings, favorite quotes and Bible verses.

Try reading the Sunday comics backward—starting from the last frame and working to the first—to your family and see if they can guess the characters speaking.

Make up a list of creative things you can do for absolutely free!

English coureswork poetry
A comparison between “The Send-off” and “Joining the colours”.
A common fact of war is that many young people often needlessly lose their lives. In the poem “The Send –off” as well as in the poem “Joining the Colours”,the young soldiers put a brave face on what they expect will be a one –way journey. To the battle-fields and death.

The soldiers of “The Send-off” are shown in the opening lines of the poem as singing and marching down the “darkening lanes” with faces that are “grimly gay”.The songs and the gay faces are obviously a brave front that they put forward,as they do not want to confront the horrors that await them.

We find the soldiers of “Joining the Colours” in a similar mood. They are “marching in step so gay!”They also march along carelessly as one would expect they also do not want to face the eventual horrors. Both poems quite clearly show a youthful force filled with life going off to confront their deaths.

“The Send-off” is filled with imagery of death. In the second verse we see the poet using a strong simile to compare the decorative flowers of the soldiers with the flowers found on corpse.”Their breasts were stuck all with wreath and spray As men’s are, dead”.Further images of death can be found in the last verse .It can be argued that here the “beatings of great bells” remind one of a funeral.

In contrast we find quite delightful images in “Joining the Colours”.Here we read of “smooth checked and golden” soldiers.Soldiers who are “careless-gay” and “singing like a lark”.Even though we find the common fact that the soldiers of both poems are singing we find a clear difference in the obvious “death-imagery” of “The Send-off” with the pleasant images of the other poem.Title to show what is going to be discussed.

Strong opening sentence suggesting a common theme between both poems and making a reader interested.
Both poems introduced and the readers pointed in the general direction that the essay will be going.

I have decided,as my first paragraphs to show how the poets write about the soldiers marching to war.Easy enough to do as both poems show this topic.
Discussin the”Send-off” and saying how this poet shows his soldiers ,their circumstances and what their mood is.

Notice how I make my discussion of one poem as the basis of one paragraph. My next paragraph starts with the words “We find” Showing a change of discussion.

In this paragraph the march of “joining the Colours”.I choose a few relevant quotes to show how these soldiers are shown.
I have already decided that my next topic will be the images found in both poems. So I read through the poems to make sure that I understand them and choose a few relevant images that I can understand and use.I also do a quick read-through of my work to make sure that I am still answering the question.

I have decided that this poem is filled with images of death so that is what I discuss .I then discuss the images I find in “Joining the Colours”.

To point out the fact that I am discussing two poems I start my sentences with words such as “In contrast”,”In comparison”,”Similarily”.or a sentence such as “In this poem we find something similar….”.”This poem has a totally different message/image /tone/etc.”

There are other ways of making comparisons ,find one you like and stick to it.

In the rest of my essay I could choose a number of things to discuss such as A)The tone of each poem,B)The way that each poet uses the poetry e.g similes, metaphors, repetition etc.C)My personal opinions of both poems(obviously backed up with proof from the poems-it earns you no marks to say you like a poem without giving a reason.
DO NOT FORGET TO GIVE A GOOD CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH.

You may have tried it or may not have;
You know someone who does it;
You hate it whilst other people love it;
They cannot get enough of it;
I am talking about only one thing…

SMOKING !

But have you considered the…
‘Health effects of smoking’ ??
Let me give you some FACTS & FIGURES that may change your mind!
To continue SCROLL DOWN
ONE WAY

How smoking affects the way you look
Smoking seriously affects your organs, particularly your
and your It also affects the way you look, changing
your skin, body weight and body shape.
Not as life threatening as heart and lung disease but, they can have obvious effect on hold old you look.
SKIN – Smoke released into the environment has a drying effect
on the skin’s surface. Smoking also reduces the amount of blood
travelling in veins and arteries so reducing the
amount of blood flowing to the skin. Damaged
skin, due to (smoke), has a

greyish, wasted appearance.
The more a person smokes the greater the risk of premature wrinkling. There is also the risk of Psoriasis –
skin condition that can result in disfiguring
and discomfort.

TEETH – Smoking results in a yellowing of the teeth and is a cause of halitosis (bad breath).
BODY WEIGHT & SHAPE – When people STOP smoking
they usually put ON weight.

As they store more body fat in the wrong areas, this leaves an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and (in women) cancer of the womb and breast.

But, WHICH WAY ?

…DOWN

…DOWN

…DOWN

…DOWN

Smoking has more than 50 ways of making life a misery and more than 20 ways of killing you. In England 284,000 people every year are admitted to NHS hospitals due to diseases caused by smoking, equal to 9,500 hospital beds every day. Plus, 8 million GP consultations and 7 million prescriptions per year due to smoking related illnesses.
In Great Britain about 450 children start smoking every day. Children are 3 times more likely to smoke if both parents smoke. Children are influenced by friends, older siblings and advertising. Sports sponsorship increase children’s awareness of cigarettes.
Teenagers who smoke are 2 to 6 times more likely to get coughs, shortness of breath and 3 times more likely to have time off school. The early years cause permanent damage to lungs and forever increase the risk of lung cancer.
If parents, at home, smoke, children are more likely to suffer the effects of passive smoking. Where both adults in a home smoked, through passive smoking children were receiving the equivalent to 80 cigarettes a year.
Half of all teenagers currently smoking, will die from smoking related diseases, if they continue to smoke. One quarter will die after 70 years of age and one quarter before, those dying before 70, will have lost 23 years of their life. Over the past 40 years it is estimated that 6 million Britons and 60 million people worldwide have died from tobacco related diseases.
One in two long-term smokers will die prematurely as a result of smoking – half of these in middle age. Every year about 120,000 people in the UK are killed by smoking. There are 3 main diseases associated with smoking: lung cancer, lung disease and coronary heart disease.
You are 6 times more likely to die from smoking than you are from a road accident, poisoning or overdose, accidental death, murder or manslaughter, suicide and HIV infection.
Every cigarette costs you 11 minutes of your life. On average a 20-a-day smoker is losing one day of life for every week of smoking. Smokers are likely to die a more painful death and spend longer being ill while they are alive.
If that has not worked, put you off the idea of smoking, then I have 1 other idea !!!
SCROLL DOWN…

Look at the following pictures…
Ask yourself…
· Do I want to put myself at the risk of these ??
· All for a few cigarettes ??
· Is it really worth it ??
· Is it what I want ??

· ONLY YOU CAN DECIDE !! ENJOY !?!

WARNING !!
The following pictures show smoking related diseases, they are very detailed and some of you may find them disturbing or unpleasant.
