You want to negotiate over the dealer's price (dealer's invoice) or the price the dealer paid for the car. The sales person will do their usual... talk to their manager and most likely lets say the offer was a little over $500 over the dealer's invoice, they will say they cannot do it. Tell them you'd be willing to take your business elsewhere and as soon as you start heading towards the door, they will most likely say they almost have their manager or higher persons convinced of the price negotiated once more that it should be a done deal.
