Dancing Skeleton

A VERY MEMORABLE TRIP

Lime bar

On July 4th last year we decided to take a rather long (approximately 200 miles and about 15 hours long) day trip. Keep in mind that when we ride Larry has to stop about every 50 miles or so because we like to relax and stretch and have a smoke.

We started in Grand Junction and headed south on highway #50 to Whitewater where we connected with highway #141. It is called the Unaweep/Taberguach Scenic Byway, we were not disappointed. First we went through Unaweep Canyon, the first town we arrived at was Gateway.

There we connected with highway #145 through the town of Norwood and over the Dallas Divide (elevation 8,970 feet) and on down to Ridgway.

Ridgway, Colorado
View from a gas station in Ridgeway

Ridgway is located in Southwestern Colorado in the magnificent San Juan Range of the Rocky Mountains. Ridgway is at an elevation of 7,000 feet.It is here that the move "True Grit", starring John Wayne, was filmed.

We stopped at a very friendly little diner, wish I could remember the name of it. They had terrific hamburgers and the waitress had a great sense of humor. When it started to rain outside she offered to roll up everyone's windows for them so they wouldn't get into a wet car. Talk about service!!! She asked us about our "car", Larry pointed to his Harley - to our surprise and delight she ran outside and did a mime of rolling up our "windows" and "putting up our top", it was great. We nearly rolled over onto the floor laughing.

After we left Ridgway we headed on home, through Montrose and Delta on highway 50.
