City of Vonda Turned Over To New Leadership
Submitted by CaIis Raan

It was a major step forward for the Salerian Confederation, when only a few hands ago, the Ubar of Port Olni, Calis Raan, pulled his soldiers from the city of Vonda and signed the city over to Eric Tellis peacefully. With Ubar CaIis' blessing, Eric Tellis now resides as the Administrator of Vonda and the city has once again joined the Salerian Confederation that, until recently, had been somewhat abandoned, as had similarly happened with the Vosk League. So Far Ti, Port Olni, And Vonda have placed themselved in the Confederation, leaving only Lara left of the original four cities that once made up the Confederation. More information is stated to be released as time progresses and will also be featured here.

Cosians Spotted on Pilgrim's Road

A report was submitted stating that along Pilgrim's Road, Cosian Tharlarion Cavalry has been spotted in large numbers. They have not yet, as of the time of this publication to this author's knowledge, been openly hostile toward any travelling upon the road, though caution is urged for those having to leave our precious waterways and travel upon land, especially on Pilgrim's Road en route to the Sardar Fairs. Even knowing the route is dangerous, the sheer number of the Cosian Cavalry has many concerned, especially with the potential posibility of another war with Ar.

The Isle of Cos

Home Pages of Cos

It was here, from the fantastic island chain of Cos, that the great war between Cos and the malignant, pompous city of Ar was launched. Needless to say, the city of Ar holds little love for Cosians, nor we for her. Cos is a mountainous island, rugged, never the less it is in this climate that the famed Ta Grape of Cos is grown.

There are four major cities on the island of Cos. Telnus, the capitol, Jad, home of our great and powerful leader, Ubar Lurius of Jad, "Long live Lurius," Selnar, and Temos. Cos claims strict control of the northern trade islands in the Cosian sea as well.

The Government of Cos is made up of two seperate elements. The first element being of course the Ubar, who hands down The laws and directives of the nation. His word is law. Second, there is the High Council. This council is made up of Cosians who, from time to time, vote on directives for the city and in general, provide focus for day to day city matters. This differs from some cities in that, while there is still an Ubar rather then administrator, the council functions much as an administrator would. Seats on the council rotate between Cosian citizens of high caste.

The Pawns Are Moved
By Alexander the II

Sometimes, a man simply follows a path, a path laid down for him by his caste or his heritage. It is one thing to say that every man is the Ubar within his own circle of steel, quite another to live such a saying.

Alexander scratched his face and considered shaving as he looked out over the formation drill.

Many men, do not choose their destinies, their destinies choose them. Can these men be considered any less happy of fulfilled then the average man?
"Kings this uniform is hot," Alexander thought to himself as he continued to watch the streams of men drilling in the parade grounds beneath him and then heard himself thinking, "I am not completely unhappy."
His thoughts were often like that. He would be in the middle of something and suddenly question the meaning of all things. "It is not so much that I do not have any choices as the choices seem to be few and far between," he said. The man next to him, a captain of the brigade below looked at him with a pu zzled expression.
"What was that commander?" the man asked.
"Nothing, nothing," Alexander asserted. "Such a bad habit, Alexander thought, "I really must stop doing that." The drill of the day seemed to go on forever and it was mid-afternoon before the last line of men passed by. "See that the men drill the phalanx," Alexander instructed, " It is not so much used any longer but often times terrain allows it." Alexander made his way from the officer's dais followed as usual by the tiny infestation of scribes.
Later in the meeting of the high council Alexander, as a representative of the military listened to the newest order of decrees from Ubar Lurius. He simply could not imagine the Ubar being bothered with half of these things yet they came to the council floor as if they were spoken from the Ubar's mouth himself.
"And the crime of stealing flowers from the city gardens of Telnus will be punishable by two days indentured service to the state," droned on the scribe.
"Now that is ridiculous," thought Alexander, "everyone knows the only human who would steal flowers from the gardens will be some innocent FW who has yet to hear the newest set of laws for the day," he smirked. Undoubtedly somewhere in a garden this very minute some noble man waited for a particular Free Woman with an eye for the state's flowers to perform her daily ritual of picking them. Her two days of servitude would either prove her ultimate fantasy or her ultimate nightmare.
And so it went for the day, after the council, a round of inspections at the harbor. Yes the catapults on the twin towers of Cos were well kept, yes the sea gate still functioned yes the burning pitch could still be dropped onto ships attempting to gain unlawful entrance to the harbor, yes yes yes. Alexander was no better then a slave to this duty, and less likely to be pleasured in any way for his trouble.
Finally after appearances of normality had been sufficiently obtained by those upper ups in t heir offices that really ran things. Alexander was called to a place he had begun to think of as only "the shed"
There on the steps of the river in the green belt of Telnus, A wide strip of fertile land between the inner and outer walls, there was a low square building. It bore little in the way of markings. Alexander imagined it might once have been a part of some mill now obsolete by mills farther up the river. He went inside.
"Kings I hate these men," he thought looking at them. They wore their usual assortment of masks or cloaks or genuinely beekish faces. They saluted him, as always far too enthusiastically their fists to their chests.
"All hail Ubar Lurius!" They shouted in their bookish voices.
"All hail Ubar Lurius," Alexander replied far less loudly.
"The signal?" the pointiest faced one said.
"Kings Pasivvas I have only met you 200 times in the last two passing hands alone do you think I am someone else?" Alexander said exasperated.
"The signal!" Pasivvas demanded.
"That man would look good cleaved in two," Alexander thought as he searched his mind for this weeks words, and it was evening so they would be different then they were this morning. "Oh yes, " he said. "Torcadino never fell." This alone would appease the clerks in their uniforms.
"Good good," said Pasivvas, He and his fellows began to draw their maps and measures and infinite numbers of markers and scrolls. In time, elaborately and excessively, the current situation map of Gor, Cos, and her units and allies lay on the floor.
Alexander reviewed, made the necessary adjustments to his thinking on supplies and logistics. He did so with the casual efficiency of a career soldier. No longer could he see the majesty of the infantry columns and their siege engines so easily. No longer did the imagined of lines of tarnships fill him with excitement so easily. It had been a long time since he had been in battle, had over seen the command of a legion, had o rdered men to their deaths.
Pasivvas handed him his orders and held in the reading device the scroll slid by under Alexander's eyes.
"What?" Alexander nearly shouted talking the bureaucrats by surprise. "What is this?"
Pasivvas smiled that sharp birdlike smile of his. "You know better then to ask too many questions commander."
Alexander read it again, the scroll spinning back fast and then slowly crawling out again in the reader. It was inconceivable but there it was. "Kings, any number of things could go wrong," he was mumbling to himself as he read it. The message began:

You will take a caravan, a peace offering to Ar's station

From the Ancient Scrolls

The helmet was bronze, worked in the Greek fashion, with a unitary opening somewhat in the shape of a Y. It bore no insignia and its crest plate was empty.

The round shield, concentric overlapping layers of hardened leather riveted together and bound with hoops of brass, fitted with the double sling for carrying on the left arm, was similarly unmarked. Normally the Gorean shield is painted boldly and has infixed in it some device for identifying the bearer's city. - Outlaw of Gor, Chapter 2

The spear was a typical Gorean spear, about seven feet in height, heavy, stout, with a tapering bronze head some eighteen inches in length. It is a terrible weapon and, abetted by the somewhat lighter gravity of Gor, when cast with considerable force, can pierce a shield at close quarters or bury its head a foot deep in solid wood. With this weapon groups of men hunt even the larl in its native haunts in the Voltai Range, that incredible pantherlike carnivore which may stand six to eight feet high at the shoulder.

Indeed, the Gorean spear is such that many warriors scorn lesser missile weapons, such as the longbow or crossbow, both of which are not uncommonly found on Gor. - Outlaw of Gor, Chapter 2

I found the shoulder belt, sheath and short sword of the Goreans. I took the blade from its sheath. It was well balanced, vicious, double-edged and about twenty to twenty-two inches in length. - Outlaw of Gor, Chapter 2

The tarn-goad is a rodlike instrument, about twenty inches long. It has a switch in the handle, much like an ordinary flashlight. When the goad is switched to the on-position and it strikes an object, it emits a violent shock and scatters a shower of yellow sparks. It is used for controlling tarns, the gigantic hawklike saddle-birds of Gor. - Outlaw of Gor, Chapter 2

I could see he (Tuchuk) carried a small rounded shield, glossy, black, lacquered: he wore a conical, fur rimmed iron helmet, a net of colored chains depending from the helmet protecting his face, leaving only holes for the eyes. He wore a quilted jacket and under this a leather jerkin; the jacket was trimmed with fur and had a for collar; his boots were made of hide and also trimmed with fur; he had a wide, five-buckled belt. I could not see his face because of the net of chain that hung before it. I also noted, about his throat, now lowered, there was a soft leather wind scarf which might, when the helmet and veil was lifted, be drawn over the mouth and nose, against the wind and dust of his ride.

He was very erect in the saddle. His lance remained on his back, but he carried in his right hand the small, powerful, horn bow of the Wagon Peoples and attached to his saddle was a lacquered, narrow, rectangular quiver containing as many as forty arrows. On the saddle there also hung, on one side, a coiled robe of braided bosk hide and, on the other, a long, three-weighted bola f the sort used in hunting tumitsand men; in the saddle itself, on the right side, indicating the rider must be right handed, were the seven sheaths for the almost legendary quivas, the balanced saddle knives of the prarie.

It was said a youth of the Wagon Peoples was taught the bow, the quiva, and the lance before their parents would consent to give them a name, for names are precious among the the Wagon Peoples, as among goreans in general, and they are not to be waisted on one who is likely to die, one who cannot handle the weapons of the hunt and war. Until the youth has mastered the bow, the quiva, and the lance he is simply known as first, or the second, and so on , son of such and such a father. - Nomads of Gor, pg10-11

His lance had a rider hood under the point, with which he might dismount opponents. - Nomads of Gor, page 14

Slowly, singing in a guttural chant, a Tuchuk warrior song, he began to swing the bola. It consists of three long straps of leather, each about five feet long, each terminating in a leather sack, which contains, sewn inside, a heavy, round metal weight. It was probably developed for hunting the tumit, a huge, flightless carnivorous bird of the plains, but the Wagon Peoples use it also, and well, as a weapon of war. Thrown to low the long straps, with their approximate ten-foot sweep, almost impossible to evade, strike the victim and the weighted balls, as soon as resistance is met, whip about the victim, tangling and tightening the straps. Sometimes legs are broken. It is often difficult to release the straps, so snarled do they become. Thrown high the Gorean bola can lock a man's arms to his sides; thrown to the throat it can strangle him; thrown to the head, a difficult cast, the whipping weights can crush a skull. One entangles the victim with the bola, leaps from one's mount and with the quiva cuts his throat. - Nomads of Gor, page 24

I learned as well the rope and bow. The bow, of course, small, for use from the saddle, lacks the range and power of the Gorean longbow or crossbow; still, at close range, with considerable force, firing rapidly, arrow after arrow, it is a fearsome weapon. - Nomads of Gor , page 66

I was most fond perhaps, of the balanced saddle knife, the quiva; it is about a foot in length, double edged; it tapers to a daggerlike point ... - Nomads of Gor, page 67

"Ah, yes, weapons," Kamchak was saying, "what shall it be the kaiila lance, a whip and bladed bola, perhaps the quiva?" - Nomads of Gor, page 123

...the quiva itself is regarded, on the whole, as more of a missile weapon than a hand knife... - Nomads of Gor, page 124

Most quivas, incidentally, are wrought in the smithies of Ar. - Nomads of Gor, page 124

It was a throwing knife, of a sort used in Ar, much smaller than the southern quiva, and tapered on only one side. It was a knife designed for killing. Mixed with the blood and fluids of the body there was a smear of white at the end of the steel, the softened residue of a glaze of kanda paste, now melted by body heat, which had coated the tip of the blade. On the hilt of the dagger, curling about it, was the legend, 'I have sought him. I have found him.' It was a killing knife.

'The Caste of Assassins?' I had asked.

'Unlikely,' had said the Older Tarl, 'for Assassins are commonly too proud for poison.' -
page 42, Assassin of Gor

The bow is not commonly favored by Gorean warriors, but all must respect it. It is the height of a tall man; its back, away from the bowman, is flat; its belly, facing the bowman, is half-rounded; it is something like an inch and a half wide and an inch and a quarter thick at the center; it has considerable force and requires considerable strength to draw; many men, incidentally, even some warriors, cannot draw the bow; nine of its arrows can be fired aloft before the first falls again to the earth; at point-blank range it can be fired completely through a four-inch beam; at two hundred yards it can pin a man to a wall; at four hundred yards it can kill the huge, shambling bosk; its rate of fire is nineteen arrows in a Gorean Ehn, about eighty Earth seconds; and a skilled bowman, but not an extraordinary one, is expected to be able to place these nineteen arrows in one Ehn into a target, the size of a man, each a hit, at a range of some t wo hundred and fifty yards. Yet, as a weapon, it has serious disadvantages, and on Gor the crossbow, inferior in accuracy, range and rate of fire, with its heavy cable and its leaves of steel, tends to be generally favored. The long bow cannot well be used except in a standing, or at least kneeling, position, thus making more of a target of the archer; the long bow is difficult to use from the saddle; it is impractical in close quarters, as in defensive warfare or in fighting from room to room; and it cannot be kept set, loaded like a firearm, as can the crossbow; - Raiders of Gor, page 2

...the crossbow is the assassin's weapon, par excellence; further, it might be mentioned that, although it takes longer to set the crossbow, a weaker man, with, say, his belt claw or his winding gear, can certainly manage to do so; accordingly, for every man capable of drawing a warrior's long bow there will be an indefinite number who can use the crossbow; lastly, at shorter distances, the crossbow requires much less skill for accuracy than the long bow." - Raiders of Gor, page 2

And there was, too, the great bow, of yellow, supple Ka-la-na, tipped with notched bosk horn, with its cord of hemp, whipped with silk, and the roll of sheaf and flight arrows. I counted the arrows. There were seventy arrows, fifty of which were sheaf arrows, twenty flight arrows. - Raiders of Gor, page 68

They were short, ship bows, stout and maneuverable, easy to use in crowded quarters, easy to fire across the bulwarks of galleys locked in combat. I had seen only such bows in the holding of Policrates. Their rate of fire, of course, is much superior to that of the crossbow, either of the drawn or windlass variety.

All things considered, the ship bow is an ideal missile weapon for close-range naval combat. it is superior in this respect even to the peasant bow, or long bow, which excells it in impact, range and accuracy. - Rougue of Gor, pages 307-308

**Suggestions Coming In**
Instead of placing a regular ad in the newsletter, why not show how active you really are and show what goes on in the city. A short write-up of a part of some SL that is going on in your city would also help draw in new people, and perhaps help weave other city's RP into yours. These kind of write-ups make great publications in the paper and show off the creativity within your realm to others. I would be exstatic to receive these.

Also, there has been some interest in a Port City Artwork Page. Ideas, comments, suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated to get this going.
