National Campaign for Firework Safety
Our aim is to promote the safe use of  fireworks
Press Release for October 15 2002
The Consumer Minister Melanie Johnson has turned her back on the public.
The public that has wept for Megan, the dog killed by a firework, in Middleton, Greater Manchester, on Thursday 10 October. The same public that has cried out to be heard in the corridors of power.
We want to be heard above the noise of fireworks.

The Campaign are very disappointed at the lack of reaction from the government.
Melanie Johnson has managed to double speak. She urges local councils to act against firework misuse, and she tells Scotland and all the Local Authorities that want to have a ban, fireworks are 'reserved status', only Westminster can deal with fireworks.
Why not give Local Authorities the right to ban the retail sales of fireworks, in their area.
Let them introduce a bye law forbidding the setting off of fireworks on any day except, November 5, and New Year's Eve.
There are many things a Local Authority will want to do to tackle firework abuse. Give them the power, Minister.

In most cases of firework abuse the Police are too busy to act immediately, so when they do turn up they say "Unless we can catch them in the act, we are helpless".
So we urge the Minister to get off the fence and act.

Let us ban all retail sales of fireworks. Let us have peace and quiet. Let our pets have peace and quiet.
The Consumer Minister has had a copy of our 'Noisy Firework' survey, which highlighted many fireworks that the Firework Industry sell as being noisy. Not all noisy fireworks are Airbombs.
Here is a selection of three from our survey
ROCKET not for the weak hearted - the bang can be heard 5 miles away!
2 x 100 SHOT ******** ******* guaranteed to upset your neighbours
2 X *** ****** ****** 2 tier rocket, superb double effect with LOUD report!
Are they being banned, the answer is no. Only Airbombs are being banned.

We do not want to hear a bang bang bang from any distance away, and certainly not at all times of the year, and at all hours of the day. Let us measure the noise a firework makes and if it is deemed too noisy then let us ban it. What is the fascination for something that goes bang.

After Megan's death the general public are divided into two camps, firework lovers and firework haters, who's side is the Consumer Minister on.

Her press release of today shows how much she panders to the Firework Industry and how little she cares for the public she was elected to serve.
When will she listen to common-sense.
How many more Megan's have to die?
