Al Horowitz Wins 37 Games, Loses Two, Draws Four Chess Master Al Horowitz took on 43 challengers simultaneously during a chess exhibition Monday evening at the Broadmoor Hotel. The score for the visiting chess wizard - 37 wins, two losses and four draws. Winning games from Horowitz were Charles Klesi of the Colorado Springs Chess Club and Ralph Hunker of the Pueblo Chess Club. Playing to a stalemate with the chessmaster were Harold Wilcox and Juan Reid of the local club and Dr. George Pipiringos and Alfred Hulmes of the Denver YMCA Chess Club. Horowitz, editor of the national magazine "Chess Review," is on a transcontinental tour and stopped over in Colorado Springs en route to Omaha from San Francisco. His exhibition here was arranged by the local chess club and the Broadmoor. The exhibition was preceded by a lecture by Horowitz on chess tactics and strategy, using a tournament game played by him as an illustration. Horowitz has three times been U.S. Open chess champion and has been a member of the U.S. International Chess Team for many years. Most of the games Monday evening were decided in the chessmaster's favor within the first two hours. Several games extended more than three hours, however, and the longest game, that of Alfred Hulmes, wasn't over until 2:15 a.m. Horowitz opened on all boards with the pawn to king four move, and played the Ruy Lopez opening when the opportunity presented itself. His strategy was to establish a pawn phalanx in the center of the board and by gradual encroachment restrict his opponent to a minimum of space. |
