Senior Master
Michael Mulyar was back in Colorado in time to play in
the Colorado Springs Open again this year, and he duly
walked away with first prize with little visible effort.
Outrating and outclassing the field as he does, his
points seem to score themselves; of course, we all
appreciate the skill and hard work it takes to play chess
that well.
On the other boards,
however, the games were hard fought, and there were
surprises galore. Upsets came thick and fast, one after
another, as top players gave up points and half-points to
players they no doubt expected to beat easily. The young
players were awesome: many, many points scored against
higher-rated, experienced adult players.
ROUND
ONE
You wouldn't expect
many surprises this round, what with ratings differences
of 600 points or more between opponents. But you would be
wrong! This round gave a good idea of what the rest of
the tournament would produce.
The biggest shock came
on board two, where FM Renard Anderson, the Colorado
State Champion, lost to Jon Tindall, rated 1583!
Youngster Mitchell Thomas of California beat an
experienced B player, while Mike Shedd and Shane Gaschler
gave up half points to players rated more than 500 points
below them. Even games where the high-rated player won
were hard fought. This is why I like this tournament
format. You never know what is going to happen!

Matt wrapped up the tournament for Michael Mulyar.
