Chapter 19
“Tea? What are you doing here?” asked Vicki.
Tea turned around suddenly, as she hurried through the lobby of The Palace Hotel. Vicki Carpentar was standing there smiling, in a lovely black dress and pearls. Although she and Todd were half-siblings they could not have been more different, she all golden and staid, to-the-manor-born while Todd was all darkness and wildness, struggling to fit in.
“Vicki…hello. I’m here to meet with a new client…I’m on my way up to his suite. What are you doing here? Got a hot date?” asked Tea, winking insolently.
“Nothing so interesting I’m afraid, just a dull business lunch with my editors. You know, Todd stopped by yesterday and told me how well things were going with Starr…I’m so glad. I still can’t believe that Blair…a mother, would be capable of such…treachery . To use her own daughter like that…it’s unforgivable.”
“Yes…I guess we all underestimated her.”
“ I don’t want to pry, Tea...but, how are things between you and Todd. He got very upset when I asked about you yesterday.”
Tea turned away and looked at her watch.
“Vicki…I’m so late. I’m sorry but I have to run. We’ll talk another time…okay,” she said, giving Vicki a quick hug and rushing toward the elevators for escape.
Tea wanted to confide in Vicki…she yearned for the comfort and companionship of a woman friend but…she couldn’t.
“My God…I have no friends,” she sighed in the elevator. Vicki and Carlotta were so dear to her, but her relationship to both women was more maternal…they were like mothers, or great aunts. They didn’t take the place of a peer…someone her own age whom she could confide in about her problems as a wife and a woman. Todd and she had become so insulated in their love, so isolated in their own little world…he had become everything to her…friend, husband, lover…there was no one else to confide in. She felt so lonely when they were…estranged.
When the doors opened she checked herself in the hall mirror, her hair neatly pinned up, her navy pin-stripe pressed and starched to perfection, the picture of a successful, competent lawyer. Now and then Tea was forced to bring in a high-priced client to keep the practice afloat with so much pro-bono work on her plate. As she looked for suite #3 she prepared herself mentally for her meeting, pushing Todd out of her head and replacing him with utilitarian thoughts of retainers and legal fees, reaching the door just at the appointed hour. Taking several deep breaths and clutching her briefcase, she knocked twice and stepped back.
The door opened and a hotel chambermaid greeted her.
“Hello, I’m Tea Delgado, I have an appointment with Mr. Loftus Wortman?”
“Yes…please come in and have a seat. He’ll be right with you.”
Tea entered the room and the maid exited quickly.
She looked around at the familiar décor of the room with it’s burgundy and pink striped sofa and matching wallpaper, having spent many lonely nights in this place back when Todd and she broke up on a weekly basis. A vague image of Todd in a black coat arriving at the door with red roses to woo her back flashed across her memory and brought a smile to her face…and tears to her eyes. He was so awkward back then, so insecure and terrified of physical and emotional intimacy with her…but he tried so hard. He never stopped trying…to live…to forgive…to love…it was what she loved most about him…that struggle.
The fire was lit and she looked deep into its flame…remembering. It was then she heard the faint tinkling of flamenco guitars playing and vases of peach roses around the room.
“Take your clothes off!”
Tea was startled and turned around quickly to see Todd leaning against the doorway that lead to the bedroom.
“I beg your pardon? What’s going on here, Todd?”
“Well, I’ve tried apologizing…like a million times…but that hasn’t worked. And…since you won’t look at me, touch me…talk to me, or even give me the time of day…gone at the crack of dawn, coming home and going straight to bed…so, I thought I’d schedule an appointment. Now…get your clothes off…we’re wasting precious time.”
Tea flung her briefcase on the sofa and walked up to him.
“What the hell is this, Todd? Do you really think that a little afternoon tryst will obfuscate the problems between us?”
“Ooh…obfuscate…a very impressive word, Delgado…are you sure you know what it means.
Tea looked up at him.
“To confuse…to make dark or obscure…as in TO AVOID!”
“Don’t do that…you know how your brain turns me on…now, get undressed.”
“I’m not getting undressed, Todd. And, by the way…where’s Loftus Wortman?”
“Loftus Wortman supplies computer paper to The Sun…and I believe he’s at a Star Trek convention in Cleveland this weekend. Anyway…since we can’t seem to talk at home with Starr and Alma underfoot…and Hedda cooking and cleaning all over the place…I thought I’d make an appointment. By the way…I cleared your calendar for the whole day…so, you’re free all afternoon.”
“You what? Fine…but just know that my time is valuable and you’re being billed at the rate of $500 per hour for as long as I’m here.”
“Fine…I’ll pay you double…now…take off your clothes. I love that suit, Delgado, but I infinitely prefer you naked…and the hair definitely has to come down.”
Tea crossed her arms in frustration.
“This isn’t funny, Todd! We need to talk…”
“No, we don’t need to talk anymore…what we need to do is altogether different from talking…that’s why we’re here. Now…could you please take off your clothes?”
Todd pulled off his jacket and began unbuttoning his shirt to Tea’s surprise.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m getting undressed. You didn’t think I was going to let you be naked alone, did you?”
“I’m not getting undressed.”
“Do you want me to do it for you?”
Tea glared at him, angry and exasperated.
“Why are you doing this, Todd? Sex isn’t going to change anything…it’s not going to change…how I feel…or how you hurt me.”
Todd stopped at the last button on his shirt and sighed walking over to her. He touched her face and held it in his hand as he looked into her dark, unfathomable eyes…seeing the pain he had caused her within them.
“I saw Dr. Woolf today…and, he said something that got me thinking. He said there’s an implicit trust in a physical connection that nothing else can equal…and I realized that…that’s when I trust myself the most with you…when I’m…naked…and making love to you. So…I thought…that would be a good time for us to talk. I think this is what we both need…to trust each other again…like that. So…I’m going into the bedroom and I’m going to get naked…and if you want to talk to me you’ll have to do the same.”
Todd leaned down and kissed her forehead lightly, then walked into the bedroom leaving her alone. Walking over to the sofa she grabbed her briefcase and headed straight for the door but when she touched the doorknob, she stopped.
“I should leave…I should just go…I should definitely go…yes…that’s what I should do…I’m going right now.”
After a few moments she threw her briefcase on the floor and marched into the bedroom.
To her shock Todd was sitting up in bed, his head leaning against the massive headboard…naked.
“Todd…you're naked…”
“Come on Tea…work with me here,” he said, looking embarrassed and annoyed.
Tea just stood there, her arms tightly crossed, but even as she struggled to maintain her anger she couldn’t help but be charmed by him or keep her body from reacting to his…betraying her mindset completely. His long body so lean and muscular, his lips so full and sensual…his eyes so hungry and anxious as he ran his fingers through his long hair, never taking his gaze off her.
She knew he’d been drunk that night, and…she accepted that he was truly remorseful for what he’d let happen…but, a primal part of her didn’t want to forgive him, the woman part of her was still angry and irrational like some raging alleycat who wanted to claw her rival’s eyes out and kill her mate for his betrayal…an educated woman with the grudge of an angry street kid. She wanted to hurt him…and to love him.
Todd pretended to be confident and cocky…but he had been terrified that she’d run. When he heard her footsteps coming toward the bedroom his heart leapt with joy and knew his instincts had been right…he knew that Tea Delgado would never refuse a challenge with him.
She paced around a little as he watched her, her brow furrowed in thought as was her way…evaluating, strategizing…weighing her options as if she were about to deliver a summation, then she suddenly stopped…and began to undress.
Todd’s lips parted as she began to unbutton her blazer revealing a rose-colored, lace bra. Staring back at him daringly, she let the blazer slide down her arms to the floor, the rhythm of the flamenco guitars playing the soundtrack as she stripped off her clothing. Letting her skirt drop to the floor, she stepped out of it and stood there in her bra and matching panties along with black, lace-top stockings and heals…Todd hated pantyhose and she’d taken to wearing only thigh-hi’s…a lover’s compromise. Reaching up she squeezed the clip that was holding up her hair and shook her head to release her generous, unruly main, then, began walking toward the bed.
“Stop,” said Todd. “I said…naked.”
Their eyes were locked together, their wills slipping as she unhooked her bra and let it fall to the floor, revealing her small, perfect breasts, their peachy nipples hard, aroused by the situation, as he gasped softly. Sliding her fingers into the waistband of her panties she wriggled slightly and slid them over her silky black stockings, bending down to remove them over her heals. She began to remove her stockings and throwing her hair back she looked at him to see if he was watching her…and he was.
“No. Just the shoes…you can leave the stockings,” he said in a low, but commanding tone.
Tea pulled off her heels, walked to the bed unhurriedly, without a hint of modesty, and sat beside him, curling her legs beneath her, and for a few moments they just looked at one another before he spoke.
“I love you, Tea.”
He reached out a trembling hand and touched her hair.
“You are so perfect…so beautiful…I wish you could see yourself through my eyes, then you’d know that what happened on that waterfront was meaningless…that I couldn’t possibly want any other woman…not in the way I want you.”
Her eyes misted and she began to turn away, the vision of Todd with that stranger still in her memory. She began to climb off the bed but Todd reached out and pulled her back forcefully, gripping her arm almost painfully.
“No…look at me! I know it hurt to see me with someone else…but…it wasn’t someone else…it was you. I was so fucking loaded…so out of my mind…I thought she was you. I wanted her to be you and I wanted you to take the pain away…because…that’s what you do, Tea. You take my pain away. Your love takes my pain away,” he whispered to her as tears formed in his eyes. “And your love…it’s…what I live for. Please…don’t take that away from, Tea.”
Tea began to cry and he pulled her slowly to him till her face rested against his chest, putting his arms around her and squeezing her tightly.
“You scared the hell out of me, Todd. I thought you just gave up on us…just like that.”
“I just slipped, Tea…that’s all. I panicked…fell off the wagon and just let my past consume me for a moment. You know me…you know how I get. Starr finding out about my past…I just thought I couldn’t get beyond that…but…you made me realize that…I could. And…I did. I can handle anything as long as I have you…”
“When you brought Starr home…and you confronted her, you were so brave in revealing your past to her. I knew it took every bit of strength you had to do that…and I admire you so much for it…for being strong for all of us,” she said, her anger dissipating, her will exhausted from resisting him. “I’ve been so angry at you…I forgot to tell you how proud I am of you…and,” she said with relief, finally letting go of her anger, “and how much I love you, querido.”
Tea lifted her face and looked into his eyes, then, she kissed him for the first time in weeks, her mouth taking his desperately. They kissed for several minutes…slowly and softly…than faster, more urgently…moaning with the delight that only they could bring to one another…savoring the delicious taste of forgiveness. Todd held her face in his hands, his mouth devouring her lips, her eyes and her skin, his teeth biting her throat with a wild, vampiric thirst as if to drink her blood and make him one with her…dark, dreamy creatures enslaved by their need…who’s love for one another had become their sustenance.
“I love you…I love you…tell me you love me,” he whispered frantically. “Tell me you want me…”
“I do…te quiero…te adoro,” she gasped beneath him as his weight burrowed into her heavily.
Her hands caressed his body with avariciousness, her fingers touching and branding every part she loved, every muscle, every vein, every scar…reclaiming him.
For a long time they went on like this, feasting on one another, but Tea gasped when she noticed the red gash on his penis. She stopped.
“Amor…what’s this? What happened?” she said touching it gently, her finger running along the pink, jagged line…already faded from healing.
“It’s nothing…I had the scissors in my hand…I was drunk and they slipped. It’s superficial…almost gone. It’s nothing,” he said, looking away from her, denying his self-mutilation.
Tea suspected otherwise, knowing he probably tried to hurt himself, but said nothing. Leaning down she planted a tiny healing kiss on the wound and looked up at him sweetly as she took a hold of his hard, swollen organ in her hand, gripping it forcefully, making him jump.
“This is mine…never forget that,” she said to him with a hint of playful anger.
Todd laughed out loud, for the first time in weeks…it felt so good to laugh with her like this.
“Damn straight it’s yours…and unfortunately for you, everything that’s attached to it as well. It’s all yours…only yours.”
Tea stretched out like a cat beside him, purring into his ear as she continued to stroke him, his bursting cock moving eagerly against her hand as she rubbed it incessantly until he whimpered in distress.
“That feels so good,” he whispered as he pulled her onto his lap, “but…I want to be inside you…dying for you…”
Tea cried out and he whispered her name as he thrust himself into her deeply.
“There…oh, God…yes…there,” he gasped. “This is where I want to be…forever. I love you…”
Tea fell against him, shaking and moaning softly…uncontrollably.
They trembled wildly but did not move, his body deeply embedded within hers…their sex raging, aching and throbbing for friction, as they looked into one another eyes, remaining completely still, wanting to hold onto this feeling…this fusion…so it could last forever. This was their truth, a primordial truth…pure…naked…there was no denying this.
Tea whimpered and bit his shoulder desperately, drooling lightly on his skin as they held on to one another without moving, the need for release unendurable…the craving for completion unbearable. He shook against her, his face grimacing with the strain of holding back, gasping as he tried to push himself in deeper…wanting his soul inside her.
“I love you…” she whispered into his ear as she began to move against him, unable to bear the physical deprivation any longer.
He threw his head back as he drove into her, growling like some tormented creature finally relieved of his suffering, groaning and panting with the mindless, wordless pleasure only this primitive truth could bring to him.
