(Chapter 4)
Todd stormed in ignoring Sam as if he were part of the doorframe. Their relationship had deteriorated completely after Sam decided to represent Blair at her trial. Sam’s defense was in trying to portray Blair as the victimized wife, having a mental breakdown after Todd engaged in an adulterous affair with Tea Delgado, but…Blair conspired with Aaron Blackmoor…so she got some jail time. Todd was convinced she would have gotten much more if Sam hadn’t defended her so passionately and painted her so sympathetically, and he’d never forgiven him for humiliating Tea and painting her as the immoral “other” woman who tore the perfect family apart.
“Todd…” said Sam, closing the door behind him. “How are you? How are Tea and the kids?”
Todd turned and glared at him incredulously.
“None of your fucking business? You don’t get to ask me about my family! Get out of my sight…I’m here to see Blair.”
Blair crossed her arms and stuck out her chin.
“This is Sam’s house, Todd…and I want him to stay.”
Todd turned and headed for the door.
“Fine…if you don’t want to see Starr…that’s just fine by me.”
“WAIT,” she called out! Todd let go of the doorknob and turned around to face her.
“Sam…would you mind very much giving us some privacy,” she said sweetly as Todd rolled his eyes at her blatant manipulation.
Sam grabbed his laptop.
“Sure, Blair. But if you need me I’ll be in my office down the hall, okay?”
“Thanks, Sam…your sweet. But…I’ll be fine.”
Sam took a last glance at Todd, who was eyeing Blair suspiciously, and headed down the hallway. Finally a door slammed and Todd approached Blair. He fished a folded document out of his pocket and shoved it at her.
“What’s this?”
“It’s a no trespassing notice. You come on my property again…and I’ll have you arrested. You got that, Blair?”
“And how am I suppose to see my daughter, ha, Todd?” she whined.
Todd stared at her for a while. She had grown older…deep lines etched on her brow and around her mouth. Her once expertly manicured fingernails were bitten and raw and her hands were rough and chapped. There was an overall crudeness…a toughness that was rather intimidating.
“You look older, Blair. What…prison life didn’t agree with you?” he said, snarling at her.
Blair put a hand to her face, touching her grooved skin, her powerful vanity wounded and exposed.
“It wasn’t exactly a country club, Todd. But…I got by. You should know by now that I always land on my feet. By the end of my stretch…I was made…respected…practically running the place.”
Todd laughed.
“Your ‘stretch’…well…I’m impressed. You even have the lingo, down. Glad you enjoyed your stint there because…if you try anything…do anything to try and hurt Tea or my kids…you’ll be going right back,” he said coldly.
Blair stared back at him, smiling…still strangely excited by his presence. No man had ever challenged her as he had…and his dark allure still turned her on. He looked good all dressed in black. His hair was to his shoulders, he’d grown his goatee back and he’d put on a little muscle since the last time she’d seen him…looking incredibly well fed. She began walking slowly toward him, rocking her hips suggestively, her eyes running up and down the length of his body. When she was just inches away from him she put her hand out and caressed his face with tenderness, recalling the excitement she once felt for him long ago.
“You look good, Todd,” she whispered, “ uhm…uhm…so damn, good,” she said, licking her lips seductively.
Todd stood still but said nothing.
“How’s that little, boring wife of yours treating you? Is she keeping you…satisfied? Because…if she’s not…maybe you and I can come to a little…arrangement? It’s been a long time since I’ve been with anyone…and…man, am I ever famished…horny as a big ole bear just out of hibernation. I promise you it’d be good…I’d give you the fuck of your life…if…you…let…me…see…Starr, of course,” she teased. Her fingers fell to his waist and began fingering his crotch before he grabbed her hand, wrenching it back painfully and jerking her away violently. “Ouch…you bastard…”she whimpered, clutching her wrist.
Todd walked over to a long table behind the sofa and bent his face over a wide, silver bowl sitting on it. Placing his finger in his mouth he shoved it down his throat deeply until he began choking, forcing himself to vomit. Blair gasped as he coughed and spat out the contents of his stomach into the decorative dish. Looking up at her contemptuously he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
“That’s what I feel when you touch me. And if you ever touch me again I’ll break your fucking hand off!”
“You sick bastard…you’re disgusting! Still picking on defenseless woman I see. Some things never change,” she said bitterly, rubbing her sore wrist and backing away from him.
“You’re not defenseless…and you’re not woman,” he said quietly, pouring himself a glass of water from the bar to wash down the sour taste in his mouth.
“Why the hell did you come here, Todd? Haven’t you done enough to hurt me already?”
“Poor, poor Blair…always the victim, never the bride,” he laughed at her.
“Fuck you! I thought you came here about Starr…but it’s obvious you just want to torture me,” she said.
Todd shook his head in disgust.
“I came here…against my better judgment. I came here for Starr…not for you.”
Suddenly, Blair softened and smiled, her features taking on some of the prettiness they once possessed. A flash of the woman he once loved passed quickly through his mind as he tried to grasp the image, to feel something for it…but it faded away.
“Oh, Todd….please let me see her. I’m sorry about that stupid little stunt I just pulled. You knew I was just testing you, didn’t you? I just cried every night without my baby and my little girl. Please, Todd,” she pleaded. Suddenly she got on her knees in front of him and he actually felt a twinge of compassion for her. “I’m begging you, Todd…please, let me see my little girl. I’ll be the perfect, mom…I promise you. Please. Please.”
“Get up,” he commanded, uncomfortable with her beggarly pleas. “Sit down.” Todd paced around, hating himself for what he was about to offer. Every instinct in his body told him not to trust her, his muscles feeling tight, burning and twitching with doubt...but…he promised Tea he’d try and be reasonable.
“You can see Starr. But…I will say when…where…and for how long. And if you keep her for one minute more than you’re suppose to…this agreement is null and void. Got it?”
Tears of gratitude streamed down her face, her excitement mounting as she squirmed and rocked back and forth nodding her head in agreement.
“Yes…yes…I promise…I’ll do just as you wish, Todd. I have no pride when it comes to my children. As long as I get to see my little girl…that’s all that matters. And…I got my own place…right here in this building so…if you let her…she can visit me here.”
“When she comes it will be with, Hedda…our housekeeper. You are not to see her alone.”
Blair looked disappointed.
“Never?” she looked up at him, her lips trembling, her eyes luminous with fresh tears and again Todd felt a wave of pity for her.
“Well…we’ll see how the visits work out.”
“I’ll have a room for her…and maybe…in time…when I’ve proven myself to you again as a mother…maybe she can stay for a weekend, now and then?”
“We’ll see, Blair. Don’t push it. And don’t fuck this up….it’s the last chance I’m ever going to give you in this lifetime.”
Blair stood up excitedly.
“No…I won’t mess this up. I know I’ve pulled a lot of nasty stunts in my life, Todd…but my babies are everything to me. I’d give my life for them…you know that. Soon…you’ll trust me…you’ll see.”
“Don’t count on it, Blair. Call me at The Sun…when you’re settled and we’ll make the arrangements,” he said, heading toward the door quickly, wanting to escape before he changed his mind and rescinded his offer.
Blair followed him out and thrust her hand out.
“Thank you, Todd,” she said quietly, waiting for him to shake it.
Todd stared at her hand, noticing dozens of tiny, fresh, red cuts and scratches. A vision of a dark, raging figure pulling and slashing away at thorny rosebushes in the stormy darkness of the early morning came into his head. He made no attempt to take her hand.
“Yeah,” he said briskly as he turned and disappeared down the corridor, riddled with doubt.
Blair closed the door, still smiling, but as she leaned against it, pressing her forehead against the cold wood, her smile faded into a grimace and her nostrils flared with the hatred that had festered inside her for one long year.
“I gave you everything I had and you threw it away…threw me away. I’ll get you…you bastard,” she hissed.
Walking over to her purse, she dug around until she found a small piece of paper. Grabbing the phone she dialed the number written on it.
“Hi…it’s me, Blair…I’m out…”
