RETURN TO PARADISE
chapter 23:

[Todd sits down next to Tea. He wants to share his feelings with her, the way she shares hers so easily with him.]

Todd: Delgado...

[The seriousness in Todd's voice causes Tea to panic. She knows that if he offers any semblance of revealing his emotions to her in this moment she won't be able to resist his request that she spend the week with him on the island, or any other request he may ask of her.]

Tea: Let's not talk anymore.

Todd: What do we do if we don't talk? Do you want to see the bed now?

Tea: I made myself clear.

Todd: You always made it clear that you hated it when we weren't talking, except when we were grunting or sleeping. Which do you want?

Tea: You invited me here to watch the sun set. Let's just quietly enjoy ourselves.

Todd: While I was waiting for you to get here, I tried watching the sun moving around in the sky. I still don't have a clue why you like watching this kind of stuff so much.

Tea: It's reassuring.

Todd: How?

Tea: Every day it happens. It's the only true constant in our lives. It's the only thing we can rely on.

[Todd reaches out and moves some of Tea's hair out of her face and tucks it behind her ear.]

Todd: I rely on you.

[Tea suddenly stands up. Todd stands up, too.]

Todd: What's wrong? Did I screw up the words again?

Tea: Those words were perfect. Who's writing your material this time?

Todd: I mean it, Tea. I know I screwed everything up before, especially the last time, but this time I think I can do it. It's just a week, but it will be the best week we've ever had together.

Tea: That won't be hard to accomplish.

Todd: You're right because this time it's just us.

Tea: My brother...

Todd: Is spending the night on the boat. In the morning, you'll tell him to get lost. It will be just you and me, like when we left Llanview together, except this time we'll both know it's only for a week, instead of you being the only one who knows it.

Tea: It was longer than a week.

Todd: Barely.

Tea: I wasn't planning to leave you. You may not believe that but it's true. It was a spur of the moment decision.

Todd: You suddenly figured out you hated being with me?

Tea: I hated the way you distanced yourself from me.

Todd: You distanced yourself a hell of a lot more by walking out that door.

Tea: I couldn't stay. You know why.

Todd: Is it the same reason you want to leave now? Every time I try, you bail.

Tea: When I try, you bail. We're even.

Todd: What you did to me was a hell of a lot worse than anything I ever did to you.

Tea: You left me stranded on a deserted island.

Todd: You had jungle boy to keep you warm.

Tea: You'll never understand, will you?

Todd: Why you ever gave a damn about me? Never.

Tea: Why what you did, and how you did it, hurt so much.

Todd: You knew what I was doing the whole time.

Tea: You were finally telling me the truth.

Todd: You always make fun of the paranoid voices in my head. What about yours?

Tea: This isn't paranoia.

Todd: You never believe me when I say that.

Tea: Because you really are paranoid.

Todd: So are you if you think I never loved you.

Tea: You never did.

[Todd steps into her personal space. Tea is tempted to back away but finds herself unable to reject his physical affection as his hand touches the side of her face.]

Todd: I love you, Tea.

[Tea closes her eyes and leans her head into his touch. The words she wanted to hear from the man she wanted to speak those words is too intoxicating a combination for her to resist.]

Todd: For the next week, I'll say it, I'll show it, I'll mean it.

[Tea opens her eyes and looks into his.]

Tea: What about after the week is over?

Todd: You'll go back to your life. You'll remember this island the way you want to remember it. You'll remember me that way, too.

Tea: What about you?

Todd: What about me?

Tea: Where will you be going? Back to Llanview? Back to your family? Back to Blair?

Todd: I might be going to hell, but not that one.

Tea: What does that mean? What are you planning?

Todd: Nothing.

Tea: I know you. I can tell when you're planning something stupid...something dangerous.

Todd: Right now, all I'm planning is to watch you watching the sky.

Tea: Todd...

Todd: This is supposed to be my night to convince you to stay, whatever way I want to. This is how I want to do it.

Tea: If your plan works and you convince me to stay, you may find it harder to get rid of me this time. Are you sure you want to take that risk?

Todd: There's a boat coming for you in a week. You'll be on it.

Tea: What about you?

Todd: I'm leaving a different way.

Tea: How?

Todd: It's not important.

Tea: The more cryptic you are, the more curious I become.

Todd: It really isn't important. The only thing that is important is that you have a good time for the next week. That's all that matters to me anymore.

to be continued...
