RETURN TO PARADISE
chapter 22:

[Not wanting to lie anymore, to herself or her ex-husband, about her feelings for him, Tea chooses instead to avoid any further discussion about her feelings.]

Tea: I'm going for a walk. I'll be back in a few minutes.

Todd: You're not going anywhere until you answer my question. Are you still in love with me?

Tea: Do you really want an answer to that question?

Todd: Yes. No. I don't know.

Tea: You can make up your mind while I take my walk.

[Tea turns to leave the cave. Todd gently takes hold of her arm, not wanting to be away from her.]

Todd: Wait! We can do that walking thing together. We can do that watching the sun set thing together, too, just like you were always trying to force on me.

Tea: I thought it would be romantic. Believe me, I've learned the hard way, Todd Manning doesn't do romantic.

Todd: This time I'll do whatever the hell you want me to do, if it gets me what I want.

Tea: Which is?

Todd: I want you to stay. I thought I made that clear.

Tea: Nothing is ever clear with you.

Todd: I'm trying

Tea: For how long?

Todd: I already told you, one week.

Tea: If I were looking for a temporary relationship, I would pick someone with less restrictions than you.

Todd: I told you I'd do whatever the hell you want. What more do you want from me?

Tea: I want genuine feelings.

Todd: Okay.

Tea: What does that mean?

Todd: It means...okay.

Tea: Sometimes I wish you came with a book for easier translating.

Todd: You never needed a book before. You always knew what I was thinking, and what I was feeling.

Tea: I thought I did. I was always proven wrong.

Todd: Maybe you were right all along.

Tea: What does that mean?

Todd: Let's hurry up and get this phony romantic garbage out of the way. I can't keep being this charming for too long.

Tea: This is your idea of charming?

Todd: This is as close as I get, and you know it.

Tea: What I know is that I need some time alone right now. When I said earlier that I was going for a walk, I was trying to avoid saying what I really planned on doing.

Todd: You're going down to the beach and yell your head off so your brother will come and rescue you?

Tea: I was planning on using the bathroom, or the closest facsimile I can find.

Todd: Why didn't you say so? I brought one of those.

Tea: A bathroom?

Todd: I told you I thought of everything this time. I'll show you where it is.

[Tea follows Todd as he leaves the back entrance of the cave. Several minutes later, they arrive at the area Todd has designated as their temporary bathroom.

He pulls back part of a curtain he has hanging from a tree to reveal a small toilet. There's also a small mirror on a stand, along with numerous toiletries.]

Tea: I can't believe you did this.

Todd: You were always griping about having to take care of nature in nature itself. It's still out here but at least there's some privacy, and something to sit on, because you're a girl and girls like to sit.

Tea: Girls also like toilet paper.

Todd: I brought a bunch of that, and soap, and everything else that you complained about not having the last time.

Tea: It's sweet that you thought this through so much, and apparently bought out a camping goods store before you brought us here. You really can be a thoughtful man, Todd Manning.

Todd: I didn't exactly enjoy rubbing leaves where leaves should never be rubbed, either. Some of this is for me, too.

Tea: I still think it's very sweet.

Todd: Whatever. I'll meet you on the beach.

[Todd walks away.

Minutes later...

Tea arrives at the beach and finds it empty. She sits down and plays with the sand with her hands as she awaits her ex-husband. She realizes that she feels almost at peace, despite the upheaval, and uncertainty, of her life right now. She doesn't know if it's the serenity and breathtaking beauty of the island, or the return of her ex-husband to her life, and heart.

She doesn't have time to analyze her feelings any further as Todd arrives. Tea's amused as she watches him trying to carry more items than he comfortably can.

At her feet, he quickly drops two beach chairs, before setting down the other items he brought.]

Todd: You don't have to sit in the dirt anymore. I brought chairs.

Tea: Maybe I like sitting in the dirt.

Todd: Okay, whatever. Forget the chairs. They were a stupid idea.

Tea: They were very thoughtful, Todd. Of course, we'll use them.

Todd: You're confusing me again.

Tea: It's only fair since you do the same to me.

Todd: How am I confusing you?

Tea: You risked your life to get away from me last year. Now, we're back. I still haven't figured out why.

Todd: Stop trying to figure it all out. You'll just end up with a headache. If you do, I brought stuff for that.

Tea: You really did think of everything.

Todd: I wanted this to be different. I wanted you to actually have fun this time.

Tea: I seem to recall having fun last year.

Todd: You were probably just delirious from that reaction you had to that jellyfish.

Tea: I thought I would die for certain. You kept me alive.

Todd: You were just being overly dramatic, like you always are.

Tea: You did save my life. And, you made me feel like my life might be going in a positive direction again.

Todd: You were stuck on a stupid island.

Tea: I was with you. I was grateful for that.

Todd: I don't know why.

Tea: I loved you. Being with you has always made the pain of being alive worth it for me. I always wished it could be the same for you.

to be continued...
