RETURN TO PARADISE
chapter 21:

Tea: What I want is to get off this island.

Todd: I get a whole night to change your mind. That's the deal.

Tea: Our deals have never worked out in the past, at least not for me.

Todd: If you don't want to be here, don't be here.

Tea: Don't get angry. I just meant...

Todd: You meant that your life has sucked all these years because of me.

Tea: Not all of the time.

Todd: Only the parts when you had to put up with me. You don't have to worry about that anymore, Delgado. This was good-bye, anyway, for real this time.

Tea: Are you and Blair getting married again? Do you expect it to actually last this time?

Todd: Nothing lasts. Haven't you heard? I'm dead. That's what everyone in Llanview thinks.

Tea: They think you vanished. You've disappeared before. Why would they rush to any assumptions this time?

Todd: Greed! That not-so-dead creep who had that morbid deal with my not-so-dead daddy dearest swiped whatever that stupid judge said he could take from me that Blair hadn't already swiped from me herself. That's all your fault, you know?

Tea: How are the latest bizarre twists in your life my fault?

Todd: You wouldn't return my phone calls.

Tea: You were an ass to think I would.

Todd: Did you think I wouldn't be able to pay you? You knew I'd have a hell of a lot more money stashed away than just the stuff everyone knew about.

Tea: I wasn't interested in your money. If hiring me to straighten out the mess your life has become is the real reason you brought me here, you wasted your time. I'm not interested in bailing you out anymore.

Todd: That's not why we're here.

Tea: Are you ready to finally reveal the reason you wanted us to return here?

Todd: I already told you -- I brought a bed.

Tea: You're impossible.

Todd: You know I'm not like you. I can't just say that kind of junk right away. I need to build up to it...for at least a week.

Tea: You have one night.

Todd: That's not long enough.

Tea: That's all the time you've got.

Todd: You'll stay.

Tea: What makes you so certain?

Todd: I know you, Delgado. I know I can count on you. You always come through for me when I really need you.

Tea: What about what I really need?

Todd: You need me. That's why you came.

Tea: I came to find out what game you're playing this time.

Todd: I'm not playing this time. This time it's for real.

Tea: What is? Fill me in on whatever you have planned. You know I'll eventually find out.

Todd: You'll find out...after it's too late for you to stop it.

Tea: Stop what? Are you planning to kidnap your kids again? Are you going to force me to be your accomplice again?

Todd: I didn't force you to do anything.

Tea: You didn't tell me the boat was leaving the dock.

Todd: One little detail.

Tea: That little detail almost cost me my life.

Todd: I'm sorry about that.

Tea: An apology from Todd Manning?

Todd: I never would have let you on that boat if I thought you might get hurt. I guess I should have figured that, with my lousy luck, we would end up shipwrecked on a deserted island. I really am sorry, Tea. You always deserved a hell of a lot more than you ever got from me.

Tea: It scares me when you say things like that.

Todd: It's the truth.

Tea: You have brought good things to my life, too. You know that, don't you?

Todd: I know I screwed your life up. I know I made you miserable. I know you have no reason to forgive me. I still want you to. You're the only person who ever really saw whatever the hell it was that you saw in me. Everyone back in Llanview is celebrating right now because they think I'm dead. You're the only person I know would never celebrate that.

Tea: Your daughter would never celebrate your death. Neither would Viki.

Todd: She's probably relieved that she doesn't have to make excuses to her friends anymore for her disappointing little brother.

Tea: She was only disappointed because she knew what potential you had inside of you. We were both frustrated as we helplessly watched you throwing away all that you could have had by focusing all your energy on anger and revenge. We were proud when you strived to overcome whatever it is inside you that keeps you from accepting anything good into your life. But, those inner demons always returned and devoured your chance to be happy.

Todd: They never have to return. They never go anywhere. They're always there. Always eating away at me.

Tea: It doesn't always have to be that way.

Todd: That's the way it is. You just never wanted to admit it to yourself.

Tea: I still don't. I still want to believe that happiness will come to you, because you deserve it.

Todd: I deserve every lousy thing that ever happens to me. That's why I never deserved you.

Tea: You deserve to be loved.

Todd: Are you saying you still love me?

to be continued...
