NEVER AGAIN
chapter 24:
Hours later...
Todd is lying on the sofa in his hotel suite. His eyes are closed but he is wide awake. His mind is too occupied to sleep. He's trying to figure out Tea Delgado. He knows he never will, but he needs something to occupy his time until he sees her again in the morning. He wasn't able to convince her to spend the night with him but his persistence was rewarded with her promise to have breakfast with him in his suite in a few hours. He knows he must find a way to charm her when she arrives so he can convince her to choose this day to give their relationship another try.
Todd grumbles as he leaps off the sofa and begins pacing. He knows he's devoid of any charm. Tea often seems to act like he has some bizarre charm that only she can see. He knows it's only in his imagination...or hers. Charm and Todd Manning have yet to become acquainted. He knows he's not good with words. He's certain he's even worse with actions. He has no idea how he'll be able to convince her to give him another chance to break her heart.
He doesn't want to break her heart. He's never wanted that. But, somehow, that's what he always manages to accomplished. It's destined to happen again. He knows it. He knows that she knows it. That's why she's been reluctant to involve herself with him again. But, he knows that if he continues to pursue her, someday she'll take that leap with him again...right off the edge of an unseen cliff. It's happened so many times before she should know not to risk herself, but for some reason she always does.
A knock at his door disrupts Todd's internal conversation.
He stares at the door for several seconds. He knows what will happen if that door opens. He knows that pain will be inflicted. He knows that he'll ultimately regret it.
The pre-knowledge of the outcome doesn't prevent him from crossing the room, flinging the door open and taking a shocked Tea into his arms.
Tea responds to his passionate kiss, as he pulls her into the suite and kicks the door shut.
Not allowing either of them time to sabotage this opportunity to be together, Todd leads her toward the bedroom, ignoring the discomfort as he bangs his body into furniture along the way.
In the darkened bedroom, Todd maneuvers Tea toward the bed. As he lowers her to it, he presses his own body onto hers, letting her know that he intends to make love to her again.
Tea is stunned. She knew that joining him in his hotel suite late at night might lead to physical intimacy. She had, however, expected more foreplay...or, at least, some foreplay before they ended up in bed. She wasn't prepared for the erotic reception she received at his door. She's uncertain that she's fully prepared for a return to their physical relationship, but she knows she won't try to stop it this time, no matter what the outcome may ultimately be for their relationship.
After several minutes, Todd removes his lips from hers and begins to kiss her neck. Tea moans softly at the sensual feeling of his lips on her flesh as well as from the anticipation of the other locations on her body that she's hoping to feel his lips tonight.
Todd enjoys the feeling of her squirming against him, not in fear, or an attempt to escape, but in passion. Each time they've made love in the past, it has amazed him how excited she's become. If it weren't for her saying his name several times when she reached her climax, he would be convinced that it had been her imagining another man that caused her excitement.
Tea's blouse is soon spread open and her bra pushed out of the way as Todd showers her breasts with the attention they crave.
His lips return to hers for several more minutes as he presses his lower body against her rhythmically, wanting to be inside her, pleasuring her, pleasuring himself. He knows that this is going too fast, but Tea isn't pushing him away. She isn't trying to stop him from getting what he wants this time...what he needs. He hopes that his desperation for her isn't too noticeable to her. He doesn't want her to know how much he needs her. He has always felt too vulnerable to allow her to truly know about his need for her. He needs to feel close to her, to feel desired by her. He needs to feel loved by her and to make her feel loved in return.
Love...
That word entering his consciousness, that feeling overtaking him like it always has whenever he's in her presence, when he looks at her, touches her, hears her voice, or even just imagines her, as he has on many lonely nights without her. Love equals pain, he tries to remind himself. Love is worse than loneliness. Loving anyone is a mistake. Loving the woman beneath him is a disaster. She doesn't play fair. She finds holes in his defenses and knows just how to make them bigger, how to obliterate the internal walls he's needed all of his life just to survive. This woman threatens his survival. He needs to get away before she can devour him again with her love. He hates that feeling. He hates knowing that she loves him. He hate hearing her say those words, knowing she's not using them to manipulate him, like every other woman would. He hates knowing her feelings for him are genuine. She really does see something inside the monster to love. He knows that she'll risk herself again trying to save him from the monster he's become. He hates himself for the destruction he's caused in her life, for the damage he knows he'll continue to cause her.
Love equals pain.
Todd growls like a wounded animal as he removes his body from hers and escapes from the room.
to be continued...
