CHAPTER 21 |
chapter 21:
Tea: This date is over.
[Todd grabs Tea's hand, preventing her from standing up.]
Tea: Let go of me!
Todd: Hear me out.
Tea: I've heard enough.
Todd: I'm trying to be honest with you this time. That's what you always say you want.
Tea: If you want to go back to your other ex-wife, go back to her. Leave me out of your pathetic, twisted, warped...
Todd: I didn't say I'd want to go through that again. If I had to, I would do it...for my kids. If you're in on it this time, things wouldn't have to change between us.
Tea: You want me to be your mistress? Better yet, we could all move somewhere that allows multiple marriages so you wouldn't have to choose between your ex-wives ever again.
Todd: You would do that?
Tea: No, I wouldn't do that, you moron.
Todd: My kids...
Tea: Stop using them as an excuse. Be honest about your feelings.
Todd: They're all I have. Don't you get that? You're always bailing on me whenever I can't figure out whatever the hell you want from me. Everyone has always bailed on me. Those kids are mine! They can hate my guts but they can't divorce me. I'll always be their father.
Tea: You don't need me. You already have a lawyer.
Todd: I don't want you to be my lawyer.
Tea: What do you want from me this time?
Todd: I don't know.
Tea: Figure it out, then get back to me.
[Tea pulls her hand out of his grip and quickly leaves the diner. Todd follows her.
Outside the diner...
Tea stops and faces Todd as she realizes he intends to follow her again.]
Tea: Our date is over, Todd. You're going your way. I'm going mine.
Todd: Your way is my way.
Tea: Not anymore.
Todd: Why are you so pissed off? You knew years ago that my kids would always come first, before we ever started any of this junk between us.
Tea: Your kids come first, Blair comes second, your newspaper comes third. Where exactly do I fit in?
Todd: You've got it wrong.
Tea: Have I?
Todd: My kids come first, then comes you.
Tea: You really think I'm a fool, don't you?
Todd: Hell, yeah!
[Tea turns and walks away. Todd pursues her.]
Todd: You give a damn about me. That doesn't just make you a fool, it makes you an idiot.
Tea: Well, I'll be an idiot no more. I'm through!
Todd: You've said that before. You never mean it.
Tea: I mean it this time.
Todd: Where are we going?
Tea: I'm going home. You can go to hell!
Todd: Are you planning on walking home? It's pretty far, you know?
[Tea stops, realizing that she wasn't thinking about where she was walking. She just wanted to get away from him. Clearly, he won't allow that right now.]
Tea: My car is at Carlotta's house.
Todd: Let's go.
Tea: We're not together, Todd. We never will be again.
Todd: Just because I want to be with my kids?
Tea: Because you want to be with your ex-wife. I'm tired of feeling like your second choice.
Todd: You're my first choice. You're my only choice.
Tea: Now who's the liar?
Todd: My kids come first, then comes you. That's how it's been since you screwed everything up by not being an ugly, annoying, money-hungry shrew, like all chick lawyers are supposed to be. I had it all figured out. I'd marry you, do that pretend family thing, get custody of my kid, and then toss you out on your ass when I didn't need you anymore. You just couldn't go with the plan, could you? You had to do all that talking all the time, all that digging. You had to keep looking at me with those eyes that always made it seem like you understood everything. You had to laugh at my jokes and get a kick out of being around me. You were always making up excuses to touch me. And, you were always giving me that look like you wanted me to kiss you, like you wouldn't puke on me, or laugh your ass off, if I tried something with you. When we did finally kiss...
[Todd stops speaking and looks away, realization of the vulnerability he's allowing himself to show her finally seeping through.]
Tea: Continue.
Todd: This is stupid. No more talking! Pick a place where we can go fuck our brains out.
Tea: Either you just want to have sex with me with no emotional attachment, or you want what you were just describing...a real relationship. Which is it?
Todd: Do you want to know what I really want?
Tea: Yes.
Todd: I want to do what we did the first time you let me screw you. I want to get you naked. I want to touch every part of you. I want you to make that noise you were making. It sounded like you liked it.
Tea: I did.
Todd: You liked it so much you split after I fell asleep.
Tea: I was scared.
Todd: You left me a note, thanking me for the mediocre fuck.
Tea: I never said it was mediocre. It certainly wasn't.
Todd: If you really liked it, you wouldn't have done that to me.
Tea: I couldn't stay.
Todd: What was it you said about it on that island? Something about being afraid I'd tear you to shreds. Maybe I did shred you up. Maybe that's why you left.
Tea: You didn't hurt me.
Todd: I got carried away, especially the second time.
Tea: We both got carried away by the passion we had denied for so long. That passion didn't hurt me.
Todd: Why'd you split on me?
to be continued...
