CHAPTER

NEVER AGAIN
chapter 4:

[They continue their meal in silence, except for the disgusting sounds Todd makes while he's eating. Tea watches him, enjoying sharing a meal with her ex-husband again.]

Todd: You're staring, Delgado.

Tea: I am not.

Todd: You missed me.

Tea: Tell me what the situation is with Viki that has you thinking she needs an attorney.

Todd: You're changing the subject.

Tea: No...that is the subject. That's your reason for coming here tonight. That's my reason for not kicking you out already. Tell me, before I lose my patience and ask security to escort you out of the building.

Todd: If you're planning on going to the phone and pretending to call security, that trick won't work on me this time.

Tea: Just tell me. I need to get back to work.

Todd: I could help you with that.

Tea: My closing argument? You've had so much experience as a defendant, you think you're qualified?

Todd: I used to run a newspaper. I know how to write a lie in a way that makes people think it's really the truth.

Tea: It isn't a lie. My client was justified in responding the way she did.

Todd: You probably wish you had done the same thing and offed your hubby when you had the chance.

Tea: Of course not.

Todd: I know I made you miserable.

Tea: Only sometimes.

Todd: It was supposed to be never.

Tea: We can't change the past. We need to put it behind us now.

Todd: Can you do that?

Tea: I already have.

[Tea's heart melts at the pained expression on his face.]

Tea: Let's go back to discussing Viki's case.

Todd: You'd probably throw it, just because you hate her brother.

Tea: I would never do that, and you know it.

Todd: Whatever.

Tea: Will you be giving me any details tonight, or should we postpone this meeting until another time?

Todd: You probably already know some of it. You know about Natalie, right?

Tea: Natalie?

Todd: My niece, I guess.

Tea: Carlotta did tell me that Jessica isn't biologically your niece.

Todd: How come you never showed up to comfort me back when I found that out?

Tea: I didn't think you needed my comfort about that, or anything else.

Todd: I don't hate Jessica.

Tea: I know you love her. I also know that, in your heart, she will always be your niece, no matter what DNA tests may say.

Todd: They say she's my niece.

Tea: I don't understand.

Todd: What kind of gossip is Carlotta? She shouldn't be spreading only part of the story, especially when the rest of it is even more twisted.

Tea: That's what your newspaper is for.

Todd: Do you have to keep rubbing that in?

Tea: What?

Todd: You know Blair got that.

Tea: Your newspaper? How?

Todd: It's all your fault.

Tea: My fault?!

Todd: Okay, it's Rayburn's fault.

Tea: What does Ross have to do with your newspaper?

Todd: Because of him, I ended up stuck on that island.

Tea: You were not alone on that island. We were all stuck there, some of us longer than others.

Todd: You need to get over that.

Tea: I don't think so. Besides, the responsibility for that misadventure goes to you, no one else.

Todd: No way! Even nature boy admitted that he steered the boat into that storm.

Tea: None of us would have been on that boat had you not been trying to kidnap your kids.

Todd: It's your fault I lost my kids, then and now.

Tea: You lost custody?

Todd: What did you expect? If you had told me about that boat Ross found, I could have knocked him out and we could have swiped it. We would have been rescued in time for me to keep my paper, and my kids.

Tea: That boat fell apart, in case you've forgotten. Had we been on it, we probably would have drowned.

Todd: Too bad the shirtless one didn't.

Tea: Had he died trying to rescue us...

Todd: He wasn't trying to rescue us. He was trying to escape without us.

Tea: Because of Ross, we both survived our time on that island.

Todd: Barely.

Tea: We survived. We both owe him for that.

Todd: I'm sure you gave him an extra fuck to show my gratitude, too, right?

Tea: Why do I ever expect you to change?

Todd: I have changed.

Tea: For the worse, perhaps.

Todd: You always did want me to change.

Tea: I wanted you to allow yourself to be happy...to stop making it so damn hard for anyone to love you.

Todd: You never loved me. You loved my money.

Tea: Which is why I'm living in the lap of luxury now, with your money, your newspaper, your kids, your homes, your cars.

Todd: Using what Blair did to me won't make what you did seem any better.

Tea: What did I do to you? I loved you...past tense.

Todd: Yeah, you've said that before, and you always take it back. You always change it to present tense, get me suckered in thinking you might actually mean it this time, and then you dump me and laugh your ass off because I was stupid enough to fall for your lies again.

Tea: Why are you here? Why would you choose to spend time with me, if that's really what you believe?

Todd: I'm here for Viki. That's the only reason.

Tea: Because of Viki, you came to my home in the middle of the night, drunk?

Todd: I was upset.

Tea: I don't buy that. This isn't about Viki at all. You're here for yourself. You thought you could get me back to Llanview, using Viki as your cover, and once I got there, I'd find myself right back in the middle of custody battle number...what is it now? Three? Four? Twelve?

Todd: Those kids are mine!

Tea: I knew it! Forget it, Todd! Been there. Done that. Almost died more than once because of it. No more!

Todd: Calm down. You've got it all wrong.

Tea: You don't want me to go back to Llanview and help you get your kids back?

Todd: Okay, maybe I want that, too, but that's not why I came.

Tea: You came for Viki?

Todd: I came for me. Are you happy now? I needed to see you.

Tea: Why?

Todd: Because, I just did. Why do you always have to push so hard?

Tea: Because, if you expect me to disrupt my life for you, I deserve to know why this time.

Todd: If you want to keep wasting your life on that loser, I don't care.

Tea: You don't care?

Todd: That's what I said.

Tea: Is that what you mean? Is that what you feel?

Todd: I don't feel anything, for anybody.

Tea: That's not true. You love your kids.

Todd: Love sucks!

Tea: Do you have visitation rights?

Todd: I have the right to remain silent every time I'm arrested just for wanting to spend time with my kids.

Tea: Blair has a restraining order?

Todd: I wasn't even allowed to see my own kid on his birthday. I had to sneak in.

Tea: Did you get caught?

Todd: None of this matters right now.

Tea: Why did you come? What exactly do you want from me this time?

to be continued...
