chapter 23

NEW YORK, TEA’S APARTMENT

Tea sat on her sofa, in jeans and an oversized white cotton shirt, with her hair in a ponytail and bare feet with their red, painted toenails. Working on a closing argument for her latest case, she was surrounded by open law books and scribbling on a yellow legal pad. She came home early to join Todd and Leo, but Lourdes told her that Todd had taken Leo to the park nearby and they hadn’t returned yet.
Concentrating on work had been difficult today, the memory of last night’s interlude in that empty parking garage was still fresh in her mind. She smiled to herself, blushing with the thoughts of what they did on Todd’s Porsche. If they had been caught they would have probably been arrested for “indecent exposure” or “public lewdness” but they had been too caught up in each other to consider the risk--too distracted by their passion to care. They were in love, and their hearts and bodies were too weak to resist their desires.

The doorbell rang and Tea started to get up, but Lourdes came rushing down the hallway to get it. Todd was there, looking casual in khakis and a beige, cotton v-neck jersey, carrying Leo in his arms and a diaper bag over one shoulder, while dragging a stroller behind him. Leo was leaning against Todd’s shoulder, sucking on his little football happily. They looked so adorable to Tea she thought she would cry from sheer happiness. Seeing Todd Manning in this paternal state fascinated her.

When Todd noticed Tea smiling at him, he looked embarrassed as he quickly divested himself of the bag and stroller and Lourdes took them away, before walking over to her. Tea got up and kissed Leo and then kissed Todd lightly on the cheek as Todd’s arm came around her and pulled her into them.

“Hi, Leo. Is your daddy trying to teach you to play football?” said Tea, caressing Leo’s face.

“Yeah, Delgado, and he plays like a girl. It’s a good thing he’s finally got a man in his life.”

Tea laughed.

“Well, querido, you are most definitely a man,” said Tea winking at Todd.

Last night’s escapade flashed through Todd’s mind as they looked at each other, reading each other’s thoughts. Leo watched the two of them interact with quiet fascination, looking from one face to the other. Todd leaned down to kiss Tea when Lourdes walked back into the living room and approached him to take Leo.

“I think Mr. Leo must be ready for a nap,” said Lourdes as she pulled Leo from his father’s arms.

Leo started crying and held on to his father’s neck with one arm as he clutched his little football in the other. The two women exchanged a look of surprised amusement as Todd smiled proudly.

“I told you, Delgado, he’s tired of being around chicks all the time. I’ll go and put him down,” said Todd as he took Leo to his room.

“Well, it seems Mr. Leo has a new ally,” said Lourdes, smiling and walking into the kitchen.

Tea picked up her books and piled them on the coffee table. As she leaned down to pick up her legal pad Todd walked back into the living room, looked around for Lourdes and came up behind Tea, knocking her over and falling onto the sofa with her in his arms. Kissing the side of her face and sliding his hands beneath her shirt he caressed her warm belly delicately and spooned with her for a few precious moments. They laid quietly.

“You realize you’ve completely charmed our son,” said Tea.

“I want him to know I’m his father.”

“I think he already does.”

Tea turned on her back and looked up at him, he looked pensive with a faraway look in his eyes as she reached up and touched his face. He looked exhausted from trying to live in two worlds.

“Todd? What’s wrong?”

He looked down at her as his fingers brushed her hair lightly.

“I went to see Blair’s doctor, right, and it was really weird. I told her about Blair’s stress pains and she acted like she didn’t know what I was talking about. Then she said Blair had spent the night there last week for some procedure, when Blair was suppose to be visiting her wacko mother at St. Anne‘s, right?”

They both sat up.

“I don’t understand. Is something wrong with the baby?” asked Tea showing genuine concern.

“Well, I never found out because all of a sudden Blair comes storming in saying she had an appointment, when her doctor said she didn’t. Then there were all these weird looks between them--I could tell they were trying to hide something. Something’s going on, Tea.”

“How did Blair know you were there?”

“She called my office and my secretary told her. Later I called St. Anne’s--she hasn’t been there in months.”

Tea stood up.

“Todd this makes no sense. If there were something wrong with the baby, what would be the advantage of keeping it from you?”

Todd stood and put his hands into the pockets of his loose khakis.

“Yeah, that’s the part I don’t get. If she wants to use this baby to hold on to me...or my money...or whatever she wants...why not tell me?”

Tea was perplexed.

“I gotta go, Tea. I have to find out what the hell she’s up to. And I need to spend time with Starr.”

Tea nodded as she put her arms around him and leaned against his chest.

“I know. Come on, I’ll walk you out.”

Tea opened the door and they walked out toward the elevator, her arm circling his back as they dragged their feet along the carpeting, prolonging his departure. When they arrived at the elevator doors, Tea pressed the button and they waited gravely for it to come up, like defendants waiting for a guilty verdict. It was getting harder and harder for them to part.

Todd stared down at her and stroked her ponytail.

“Last night was...educational! I never knew cars turned you on so much, Delgado.”

She smiled up at him, her head cocked, and her dark eyes focusing on his.

“And what turns you on, Todd Manning?”

“Feisty, Puerto Rican, chick lawyers who keep me...driving...all night long,” he said as he bent down to kiss her.

Closing his eyes he sunk his mouth into hers, drowning in the sensation of the warm, wet cavern of this sweet orifice. Their bodies locked as the elevator door opened, and then closed again without their noticing, as their sensual desire blocked out all other senses except taste, smell and feel.

“I gotta go,” he whispered, but not making any real effort to disengage from her as he kissed her again and pulled her body closer.

“I know,” she said as she pulled the tip of his tongue into her mouth and sucked it lovingly, pressing her body firmly against him as he pushed into her, unable to control himself.

“I really have to go,” he said breathlessly, pulling away from her mouth and leaning his face against hers. She was panting softly against him when the elevator doors opened again.

A little, blue-haired woman was standing their holding a blue-haired, miniature poodle on a leash and looking at them with a prudish, raised eyebrow, as she made her way down the elegant corridor.

Todd finally let go of her and entered the elevator. They stared into each others eyes, their gaze connected until the heavy, razor-sharp doors of the elevator cut it in two like some cruel guillotine, and she stood there looking at them as if something vital had been sliced from her body by this mechanical monster.
