chapter 22

LLANVIEW, HOSPITAL

Todd walked down the corridor reading the names on the doors till he finally found the one he was looking for: Dr. Naomi Parker. He had bypassed the office staff and he looked around quickly as he knocked loudly and a voice told him to enter.

Walking in, shutting the door behind him, he saw a pretty, black woman with neat corn-rowed hair sitting at a computer, who looked at him up with surprise. She recognized the notorious Todd Manning immediately as she stood up to greet him.

“Mr. Manning! Did we have an appointment?”

“No, I’m here to talk about Blair Cramer and her...condition.”

She sat down again and she motioned for him to sit as well. Todd sat down.

“Is Ms. Cramer all right? She was fine when she left the hospital last week, we would have kept her for another day, but she insisted on leaving.”

Todd stared at her with some confusion, but said nothing.

“Last week,” he repeated.

“Yes, last Friday. Is she experiencing any discomfort?”

Todd remembered that last Friday Blair had spent the night at St. Anne’s visiting her mother.

“She’s still getting that pain. You know the one you said was caused by stress?”

Dr. Parker looked confused.

“Pain caused by stress? I don’t understand. Ms. Cramer should be experiencing some discomfort but not pain. The procedure she had was pretty routine.”

Todd stood up.

“What procedure?” he asked loudly, “Is something wrong with my kid?”

Dr. Parker stared up at him realizing he didn’t know about the miscarriage. She looked away from him and quickly stood up.

“Mr. Manning, I’m sorry, but I can’t discuss Ms. Cramer’s...uh...condition with you--doctor/patient confidentiality. If you need to know something, you must ask Ms. Cramer,” she said without looking him in the eye.

“What’s wrong with my kid?” he demanded, sensing her reticence.

At this moment, the door suddenly opened and Blair came bursting in and Todd and Dr. Parker both looked in her direction. She had called Todd’s office at The Sun and his secretary had told her he went to see Dr. Parker. Noticing the expression on Todd’s face, for a moment she thought he knew the truth.

“What are you doing here, Todd?” she asked trying to sound matter-of-fact.

“What are YOU doing here, Blair?”

She smiled weakly at Dr. Parker who had a very strange look on her face. She noticed Blair was wearing a purple maternity dress and she noticed the bulging outline of her stomach, a stomach she didn’t have when she left the hospital a week ago.

“Well, she’s my doctor, Todd, you know that. I’m here for my appointment.”

“You don’t have an appointment, “ said Dr. Parker emphatically.

“I don’t? Oh, silly me. I must have gotten the dates confused. Oh, well. So, what are you doing here Todd?”

Todd looked from Blair to Dr. Parker whose gaze was on Blair’s belly, and felt something was wrong, but he didn’t want to give anything away.

“I came to ask Dr. Parker about the stress pains you’ve been getting, Blair?” he said staring her in the eye.

“Oh, isn’t that sweet, Dr. Parker, he’s worried about me,” she said smiling with relief, sensing he knew nothing.

Todd noticed the disapproving look on Dr. Parker’s face as she looked at Blair.

“Mr. Manning would you mind waiting outside while I speak to Ms. Cramer?”

Dr. Parker escorted Todd out and closed the door, turning to Blair.

“I don’t know what kind of sick game you’re playing Ms. Cramer but I will not be a part of it. It’s obvious to me that Mr. Manning still believes your pregnant.”

“My private life is none of your business. And I hope you didn’t tell him anything, or I’ll sue you and this hospital for everything. Is that clear, Dr. Parker?” Blair said viciously.

“As you well know I’m bound by an oath which prohibits me from discussing your condition with anyone so no, I didn’t tell him anything but, as of this moment, I am no longer your doctor. When You find a new one I’ll send your records to them, now please get out of my office, Ms. Cramer, or I’ll have security do it”

Blair sneered at her and walked out quickly. Todd was outside leaning against the wall as she approached him with a self-satisfied smile and touched his arm.

“Is everything okay?” he asked suspiciously.

“Couldn’t be better! Mommy and baby are doing just fin,” she said with exaggerated cheeriness.

Todd pulled away from her.

“I’ve gotta get back to the paper. Can I drop you off?”

“I have my car. But you could take me to lunch?”

“I can’t. I...uh....have a meeting this afternoon. But we’ll talk later, at the house.”

“You’ll be home for dinner? Great, it’s been a while since we’ve been together as a family. Perhaps we can finalize our wedding plans.”

Todd stared at this woman. She had been lying about St. Anne’s, what else was she lying about he wondered.

“I’ll see you later,” he said, quickly turning and walking away, leaving her standing there in the long corridor. Alone with her lies.
