chapter 11
DORIAN'S MANSION
Blair roamed around the house anxiously. Todd hadn't come home again last night. She rubbed her stomach absentmindedly until she felt the small pillow she had placed there and realized her baby was gone. It had been like this for the last few days, she kept forgetting she was no longer pregnant. She felt herself begin to weaken, wanting to give in to her emotions and mourn the loss with a good cry, but she couldn't afford that luxury right now - not with Tea Delgado lurking around. She could lose everything if she didn't handle things just right and the only power left to her was this fictional child - this little pillow of deception. This was cruel and ugly, she understood that, but Todd left her no options - she just didn't trust his depth of feeling for her.
She heard the front door slam as Todd came barreling in.
"Where the hell have you been all night," she shrieked, coming out of the living room and into the foyer.
"Well, good morning to you to, Blair... I ...uh... was at work," he said carelessly, not even caring whether she believed him or not.
"I called there for half the night and this morning...and you weren't there!"
Todd watched her hard, inquisitive expression, then his eyes moved to her belly which she rubbed softly and his guilt overtook him.
"I just went driving. You know how I get."
Blair eyed him suspiciously - she didn't believe him - but it was obvious that he wasn't about to give anything up. Starr appeared at the top of the stairs and came rushing down them, carrying a bridal magazine.
"Daddy! Daddy! Look at the dress I'm going to wear at our wedding," she said excitedly, jumping into his arms.
He held her for a moment, feeling her warmth in this cold place, and eyed Blair as he took the magazine from her. She had wasted no time informing Starr - lining up her troops, stockpiling her ammunition. Blair smiled innocently at Todd.
"That's great, Starr, but your Mommy and I haven't decided about it yet. It may be a while before there's a wedding," he said, directing his look at Blair.
"Oh, come on Todd, I think we should do it right away. The sooner the better, right Starr? Tell your Daddy that's what you want, isn't it?"
Starr looked up at her father, smiling just like her mother with conspiratorial innocence.
"yes, Daddy, that's what I want...the sooner, the better...just like Mommy said, "she said sounding very rehearsed.
Todd gave the magazine back to Starr and looked at Blair defeatedly, like a bruised and bloodied boxer watching his opponent from his corner and realizing, he had clearly lost this round.
"I need to go upstairs to change and get to work," he said, hurrying upstairs before his rage could overtake him.
Starr watched him go up stairs and looked back at her mother.
"Daddy smells like Tee and my dolly, Nurse Tee," said Starr.
Blair glared at her, her eyes shrinking into small, green slits of ugly perception.
"Starr, honey, why don't you go upstairs and let Clair help you get ready for camp. Later on tonight we can all sit around with your daddy and plan our wedding. Okay?"
"Okay, Mommy," she said running quickly upstairs.
Blair paced around the living room. Was he with her last night? Yes, of course he was, her stink was still on him she thought. She walked over to the phone and dialed The Palace Hotel. The reception desk picked up.
"Could you connect me to Tea Delgado's room? This is Carlotta Vega."
There was a pause before the clerk came back on.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Delgado checked out early this morning."
Relief softened Blair's features as she hung up. Tea was gone...for now. Even if Todd was with her, he wouldn't leave her and Starr now - not with a new baby between them. She heard him coming downstairs and heading for the door.
"Todd! Aren't you even going to say good-by to me?"
He turned around, freshly shaved and wearing a brown suit with a beige and brown striped t-shirt beneath it. She observed the change in him, he looked sensual and alive with a certain vitality in his movements that she had not seen for some time. A wave of desire ran through her.
He had not touched her since that night so long ago that resulted in her pregnancy. It had been a rather disappointing night for both of them - he barely let her touch him and she had not been satisfied. He was barely inside her, only for a few moments of release, and then he turned away from her and never touched her again. Once, there had been real passion between them, but now everything was cold and awkward. But a part of her still wanted him, still yearned for the past, and she was certain they could get those feelings back - those feelings that were still around before Tea Delgado came into their lives and stole everything.
She walked over to him and caressed his face, but he shrank from her touch.
"I gotta go," he said turning, going out the door and slamming it behind him.
"Damn it!" she shouted into the empty foyer.
She sensed him moving farther and farther away from her emotionally. She went upstairs to his room and poked around, but she saw nothing out of the ordinary. His room was Spartan and uncluttered, all Todd's secrets were securely locked up in his head. She noticed the suit he had on earlier in a heap by the wall and picking it up, she started fishing through the pockets until she came upon the note. Opening it slowly, she noticed a small wad of hair fell out of it and bent down to pick it up. When she looked back at the note she saw The Palace Hotel logo and read the one word written on it - SOMEDAY. Looking up, consumed with anger and confusion, she was startled by footsteps running up the stairs. She shoved the nest of hair back into the folds of the note, slid it back into its pocket and dropped the jacket back on the floor. As she ran for Todd's bathroom, she heard the footsteps coming closer, on the hallway and finally stopping at the room door. Through the crack in the bathroom door she noticed Todd step back into the room, his eyes darting around frantically until they landed on the pile of clothing against the wall. He picked up the jacket and carefully removed the note, checking its contents, and then slipped it into his pocket. He left abruptly and a few movements later she heard the front door slam.
Blair came out and sat on his bed, dazed and enraged. He was with her last night - she was sure of it. And if he found out she wasn't pregnant, he would leave her.
Walking around the room, trying to focus her anger, she decided she needed help. She needed to recruit an ally to win this war. Informing Clair that she was going out for a while, she went downstairs, grabbed her handbag and left.
