STILL IN THE SHADOWS

BY TIMA

CHAPTER

1

Previously:

[Todd and Tea silently walk across the parking lot. Neither knows what is coming next for them but they both know that their lives have once again changed permanently because of the other person's presence in it. They both also feel fairly certain that the pleasure of the evening isn't over yet.]

[Tea is at the penthouse, sitting on the couch, sipping her morning coffee while she looks over files for cases she's working on in the DA's office, when the phone rings.]

Tea (distracted by the file she's reading): Hello?

Todd: Haven't you had your coffee yet?

Tea (smiling as she puts aside the file): What makes you ask that?

Todd: You sounded like you were in a bad mood or something.

Tea: No. I was just looking over some paperwork for some of the cases I'll be working on today.

Todd: Oh, you're in lawyer mode. I could call back later if I'm interrupting something that's more important than me.

Tea: I could call you back but you won't give me your phone number.

Todd: My cell phone is for emergencies only. I know you. You'd be calling me to chat about what you ate for lunch or about the pathetic developments in the lives of all of the Llanview losers.

Tea: What about your daughter?

Todd (anxious): Did you see her?

Tea: A couple of days ago.

Todd: How did you manage that?

Tea: It was a coincidence. Andrew brought her by the diner while I was there.

Todd: Did you and your old fling have a cozy chat?

Tea: Jealous?

Todd: I don't do jealous.

Tea: Right.

Todd: So, did you spill the secret?

Tea: No, but it was so hard not to.

Todd: You got lost in Andy's hypnotic eyes and didn't want to lie to him anymore?

Tea: Hardly.

Todd: You were feeling guilty and you wanted to confess?

Tea: Only to Starr. Why don't you come out of hiding and spend some time with your daughter?

Todd: I've spent plenty of time with her.

Tea: Hiding in the shadows and secretly watching her isn't the same as openly being with her. She needs a father not a stalker.

Todd: Well, she doesn't need me. No one does.

Tea: I don't know about that.

Todd: If I start to hear anything even close to sappy or sentimental from you I'm hanging up. It's still too early in the morning for any of that garbage.

Tea: Fine, then call me later.

Todd: Why should I call you? You're going to come and see me, right?

Tea: Are you sure you want me to?

Todd: I'm not in the mood for stupid games either. Either show up or don't. This conversation is over.

Tea: Wait. Don't hang up.

Todd: What?

Tea: What about Starr?

Todd: Do something with her in public...just the two of you.

Tea: That might be hard to swing.

Todd: Well, make it happen. Use your connections with the preacher. I need to see her. Besides, if I spend one more afternoon lurking near her school some concerned neighbor will probably call the cops on me.

Tea: Don't worry. I'd get the charges dropped.

Todd: Do you really have that kind of weight to be throwing around?

Tea: I'll show you tonight how good I am at throwing my weight around.

Todd: Bring dinner. Unless you want me to cook again.

Tea: No. Not after the last disaster. If you set your motor home on fire it just might force your presence to be revealed.

Todd: Don't want that.

Tea: You know, this conversation isn't over.

Todd: Yes it is.

[Todd hangs up. Tea smiles to herself for a moment before looking at her watch, and realizing the time, quickly gathers her things for work and rushes out the door.]
