REACHING OUT

BY TIMA

CHAPTER

24

PREVIOUSLY:
Tea: It's not my medication talking. I've always believed that if you just opened up and allowed people to see, and touch, those parts of yourself that you keep so guarded and shut off from everyone...

Todd: What would happen if I let my guard down?

Tea: You could allow yourself to feel loved.

Todd (whispering): That's a miserable feeling.

chapter 24:

[Tea feels emotionally exhausted and doesn't want to continue fighting Todd's attempts to reunite with her anymore.]

Tea: It's time for you to take me back.

Todd: So we can have breakfast together?

Tea: Okay, fine. We'll have breakfast together. Then, you'll leave. Agreed?

Todd: I agree we'll have breakfast together...today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, the day after the day after tomorrow, the day after...

Tea (interrupting him): I get the idea.

Todd: You're not going to fight it anymore, right?

Tea: It can't happen between us again. You can continue to waste your time trying to convince me, but it won't work. We're never getting back together again. You should accept that and go home.

Todd: So, you'll let me continue spending time with you, trying to convince you?

Tea: If you want to waste your time...

Todd: I'll waste the rest of my life convincing you that you were right to give us another chance.

Tea: I'm not agreeing to live with you again.

Todd: You don't have to...not until I find a place for us to live.

Tea: You're impossible.

Todd: You love that about me, just admit it.

Tea: Take me back now, before my stubbornness kicks in and I insist on getting back on my own.

Todd: You're the most stubborn broad I've ever met. You should use that stubbornness to get through the lousy way you're feeling right now, instead of making it such hell for me.

Tea: If dealing with me is so horrible, maybe you should leave.

Todd: And, let you win? No way. I'm better at being stubborn than you are.

Tea: Not a chance, Manning.

Todd: We'll see, Delgado.

[Minutes later, Todd returns Tea to the rehabilitation facility. Instead of dropping her off directly in front of the building, the same place where he picked her up, he parks his van in the parking lot and pushes her wheelchair toward the building. Tea knows that he was afraid that if he dropped her off at the entrance, she would instruct the guards not to let him in to see her anymore. His determination not be kept from her touches her, even though it would be easier for her if he did finally give up and leave.

After entering the facility and making their way to her room, they both are surprised to find that Tea has an unexpected visitor.]

Tea: Del! What are you doing here?

[Tea's brother's smile quickly fades as he sees Todd standing behind his sister. Todd stops pushing Tea's wheelchair. She wheels it herself toward her brother.

Del kisses her on the cheek before returning his angry stare to Todd.]

Del: I wanted to surprise you.

Tea: You have. You remember Todd, don't you?

Del: I wish I didn't.

[Del looks away from Todd again and back towards Tea.

To Todd's frustration, Del begins speaking to his sister in Spanish, wanting to keep Todd out of the conversation. Del asks Tea why Todd is there. Tea explains that he showed up unexpectedly, days ago. She asks Del not to be rude to Todd. He refuses to be anything but, considering how his former brother-in-law treated her in the past.

Tea finally turns toward Todd.]

Tea: Could you give us a few minutes?

Todd: Go ahead.

[Todd moves over to her bed and plops his body down.]

Tea: I meant, could you leave the room? Just for a few minutes.

Todd: You're talking in a foreign language. I don't need to leave the room to not have a clue what you're saying about me.

Del: We're in Puerto Rico, you ignorant idiot. Spanish isn't a foreign language here.

Todd: Whatever.

[Del returns to talking to Tea in Spanish, concerned that Tea is again mixed up in Todd's messed up life. She tries to reassure him that she's not. He doesn't believe her.

Todd closes his eyes as he listens to their conversation. He can tell that Del is angry at his presence. He smiles, enjoying how ticked off Del sounds. Even more, he enjoys the sound of Tea's voice as she speaks beautiful sounding words as she defends him to her brother. Todd doesn't know for certain what Tea is saying about him but he senses that she isn't agreeing with whatever horrible things her brother is saying about him. It makes him feel good to imagine that Tea is back on his side, defending him again just like she did so many times in the past.]

to be continued...
