FALLING UPON CUPID'S KINDNESS

CHAPTER

7

chapter 7:

[Later that evening...

Todd and Tea are sitting in a Broadway theatre, enjoying the hottest production of the season.

Todd begins tapping his fingers on the armrest dividing his seat from Tea's. To stop him, Tea places her hand on top of his. For the rest of the play, her hand stays connected to his.

When the play finally ends, they return to Todd's limousine.]

Tea: That was great, wasn't it?

Todd: What?

Tea: The play.

Todd: It was okay.

Tea: Just okay? You must have spent a great deal of money on those tickets.

Todd: So?

Tea: So, you didn't enjoy it at all?

Todd: I said it was okay.

Tea: That's right, for you, that's a grand compliment.

Todd: Whatever! Are you ready to eat?

Tea: Could we drive around for a little while first?

Todd: Sure.

[Todd pushes the intercom and talks to the driver.]

Todd: Drive!

Tea: Wait! Did you make a reservation somewhere? I don't want to ruin your plans for the rest of the evening.

Todd: What plans? I just threw this all together at the last minute.

Tea: You did not. That play is impossible to get tickets for.

Todd: Apparently not.

Tea: I really appreciate it, Todd, especially today.

Todd: Why especially today?

Tea: No reason.

Todd: It's not one of our anniversaries, is it?

Tea: No, Todd. You don't have to give me that tortured look. It is definitely not our anniversary.

Todd: What's so important about today?

Tea: Nothing.

Todd: So, you plan on keeping secrets from me, just like everybody else?

Tea: Who's keeping secrets from you?

Todd: You are.

Tea: I am not. Today's my birthday.

Todd: Yeah, I knew that.

Tea: You did not.

Todd: I wore a tie, before you ripped it off me. I only do that when I get caught and have to go to court, when I get hitched, or when I take someone out on their birthday.

Tea: It's okay that you didn't know it's my birthday. I still appreciate that I'm spending this evening with you.

Todd: So, how old are you? Forty? Fifty?

Tea: Very funny!

Todd: Since it's your birthday, I guess we can go to dinner wherever you want to.

Tea: I thought you made reservations?

Todd: So? We're not required to go there. We can go anywhere you want.

Tea: Anywhere?

Todd: Sure.

Tea: There was this wonderful place I went to while I was in France.

[Todd again presses the intercom button and speaks to his driver.]

Todd: Take us back to Ms. Delgado's building.

Tea: I thought we were going out to dinner?

Todd: I'm sure you have a lot of junk in your purse, but do you have your passport?

Tea: Of course not.

Todd: We have to go back for it. We'll stop at my hotel on the way to the airport and get mine.

Tea: Todd, I was joking about going to France.

Todd: I'm not.

Tea: Well, I am. I don't want to leave the country just for dinner.

Todd: Why not? People do it all the time.

Tea: Maybe in your circle, but certainly not in mine.

Todd: You used to be a part of my circle. You liked it, didn't you?

Tea: I liked being a part of your inner circle. But, the social circle of the country club set was never really comfortable for me.

Todd: If that's true, you faked it pretty well.

Tea: I always felt out of place. I felt like the janitor's daughter who had snuck into a fancy party but really belonged in the kitchen with the rest of the hired help.

[Todd presses the intercom again.]

Todd (to the driver): I've got a chick back here who can't make up her mind where she wants to go. Find somewhere with trees, and other stuff chicks like to look at, and drive around it for a while.

Tea: I'm sorry, Todd.

Todd: I never thought of you as hired help.

Tea: Technically, you did hire me.

Todd: I didn't think of you that way.

Tea: I know. I just never felt like I truly belonged in the fancy places you could afford to take me. I was always aware of who I was...where I came from...how I got there. I always felt like people were staring at me.

Todd: You should have told me. I would have made them stop staring.

Tea: They may not have truly been staring at me. It may have just felt that way, because of my childhood.

Todd: People stare at me all the time. I don't give a damn.

Tea: I don't believe that. Don't you ever wish there was somewhere that you could feel like you completely belonged?

Todd: Belonging...that's overrated.

Tea: I don't think so. I've spent much of my life feeling like I didn't fit in. The older I get, the more I want to find a place where I do belong, where I don't have to work so hard to fit in. I want to relax and be comfortable. That's why I like my apartment. It may not be grand, but I can relax there. I can be myself, instead of trying to be what other people want me to be. I've wasted so much of my life trying to twist myself into what I thought I needed to be so people would accept me. No more. I want to be the real me. And, I want people in my life who will accept me for who I am and not want me to pretend I'm something I'm not.

Todd: Do you want to go back to your place and change into your sweats?

Tea (laughing): No. I enjoy dressing up, sometimes.

[Tea surprises Todd by moving closer to him and resting her head on his shoulder.]

Todd: What are you doing?

Tea: Your view is better than mine.

Todd: We can trade seats.

Tea: This is fine.

Todd: I thought you only wanted to be friends this time.

Tea: We are friends...at least, I hope we are.

Todd: Friends do this kind of thing?

Tea: They can.

Todd: So you rest your head on the chests of all your female friends, too?

Tea: I'm more on your shoulder. And, yes, I have rested my head on the shoulder of female friends in the past.

Todd: Chicks are weird.

Tea: I know. We don't pound each other on the arm as a way of showing affection, like you men do. I like this better, don't you?

Todd: I don't want any guy putting his head where yours is right now.

Tea: Is it okay if I keep my head here?

Todd: You'll fall asleep.

Tea: No, I won't. We haven't even had dinner yet. But, speaking of sleeping, you didn't have to sneak out last night after I fell asleep.

Todd: You expected me to spend the whole night just sitting there watching you sleep?

Tea: I guess not. I am sorry that I was such a horrible hostess.

Todd: I've had worse evenings.

Tea: I did enjoy spending the evening with you last night.

Todd: The part you stayed awake for.

Tea: Especially that part.

to be continued...
