LA
PAZ
La Paz was founded
by Hernan Cortez in 1535. It has been the capital
of the State Baja California Sur since 1829, after the destruction
of the then capital, LORETO by a hurricane and is lately
becoming a favorite spot for tourists.

This
is due to its beautiful serene beaches, wonderful restaurants,
great shops offering duty-free items and excellent diving and
sport fishing activities. With the longest history of any settlement
in the Californias, La Paz has probably had the most turbulent
one. But in spite of its challenges, it has managed to evolve
from a "sleepy" little port into a vigorous, modern
state capital. |

La Paz and
the surrounding area is a paradise for ecotourists . Among
the best worldwide scubadiving destinations, more than 25
first-class dive sites surround the Bay of La Paz, the islands
of Espíritu Santo, San Jose and Cerralvo. Cabo Pulmo,
in the East Cape region, has recently been declared a marine
reserve and harbors one of North America's only living coral
reefs, home to numerous exotic marine species. Sea lions colonies,
migrating whales, giant mantas, pods of

and impressive numbers of sharks, especially hammerheads, lure
diving enthusiasts here. Sport fisherman have long known that
the deep-water canyons and sea mounts harbor an abundance of
species ranging from big-game sport fish to light-tackle speedsters.
La Paz possesses an enviable geographic location providing an
ideal starting point for innumerable natural history land forays.
Bird watching, exploring unspoiled white sand beaches and treks
to the cave paintings in the Sierra de San Francisco and the
surrounding desert provide wildlife lovers a unique opportunity
to observe nature in its pristine natural state. La Paz has
endured numerous conquerors, pirates, missionaries and entrepreneurs,
creating a flowery past full of risk, daring and lore. Its historical
essence is surrounded by mystical charm, reflected in the rich
culture and the legendary crimson sunsets that adorn its skies
day after day. |

WHALES
Each year,
the longest known mammal migration on earth commences as the gray whales
undertake an arduous 5,000 miles journey from the frigid waters of the
Bering sea to the three primary warm water lagoons off the Baja California
Coast. Here they will court, mate and give birth to their calves conceived
the previous spring. In addition to the Grays, Sperm Whales, Orcas, Humpbacks,
Blues, Pilots and Fin Whales frequent the surrounding seas attracting
droves of whale-loving travelers who, on occasion, get close enough to
touch the magnificent leviathans.
