Chapter 5

The next day Jafari's cries woke Brian and Jackie up. They'd both stayed overnight with her. She was on an oxygen machine, and when she woke up and saw the mask on her face, it scared her. The both smiled, glad she was awake. But the smiles were deep frowns later on, when she began to turn blue around the lips and nose. A nurse stayed in the room to monitor her, and when she became critical, she was moved to the intensive care unit. She needed to be under lots of observation in case she got any worse. Oxygen was put in through her nose and her mouth, and carbon dioxide was measured on a machine. Jackie was too stressed to be by her bedside, so to protect Jafari she stayed in the parents room across the hall. Brian sat by her though, talking to her, even though she was asleep. Her cardiac doctor came by to check on her once more, noting the carbon dioxide level and the blue complexion on her face. "How is she doctor?" Brian asked. "Well the carbon dioxide level has decreased dramatically, but we need to run tests and see what caused this. She should be sleeping most of the day as her body recovers. But she'll be fine." Brian smiled and squeezed the hand he was holding. He had to go find his mom, maybe she'd calm down and join him by her bedside if she knew that Jafari would be fine. When he found her she was relieved to know that Jafari would be okay. And she joined him for the remainder of the day.
