CHAPTER-5

THE LOST CHILD

Madison saw a giant of a man with a lantern held in his hand. He called the first years, so Madison followed along with other new Hogwarts students. They crossed a great lake. Madison could not take her eyes off the castle, on the mountain. They got off at an underground harbor and went up a passageway. She saw the castle and gasped. It’s bigger than it looks, Madison thought. She felt she had gone back in time. They walked toward huge oak front doors and the giant, who Madison now knew was called Hagrid, knocked. The doors opened and Madison saw a familiar face, Professor McGonagall.

Everyone walked in as Professor McGonagall directed them into an empty room. She welcomed them and told them they would be sorted in a couple of minutes.

“Miss Othera would you please join me outside for a minute,” Professor McGonagall said.

Just as the words left her mouth, whispers filled the room. Have I done something wrong, Madison thought, as she stepped into the entrance hall.

“Here put this on,” she handed Madison a black robe. ”Tomorrow we’ll go buy the rest of your things.”

Madison went back with the rest of the first years, only to be received by stares and whispers in her direction.

Professor McGonagall then came back in and instructed them to form a line. They walked into the Great Hall. Madison was really scared now. All those people staring at them made her sick to her stomach. They lined up at the front and Professor McGonagall placed a stool, with a pointed hat on top, in front of them.

{A/N: This is where the sorting hat would sing, but for the sake of the story, I will not try to write a poem for it. So just imagine it in your mind. : -) }

Everyone applauded. Professor McGonagall stepped forward and instructed them to put the hat on and sit on the stool, when she called their names.

“Agrey, Linda” “Ravenclaw” shouted the hat.

“Bern, Justin” “Hufflepuff “

“Berlik, Myrna” “Slytherin”

“Carter, Crystal” “Gryffindor”

“Dupont, Lucinda” Slytherin

“Erickson, Sally” “Ravenclaw”

“Green, Lee” “Hufflepuff”

There were still a few people left before it was Madison’s turn. Madison’s stomach was churning.

“Lik”.., “Malfoy”.., “Melfinn”.., “Mont”.., “Noir”.., “Nords”

And then, finally.

“Othera, Madison!”

Heads turned and whispers filled the Great Hall.

Madison stepped forward, put the hat on and sat down.

Silence.

She could hear herself breathing harder. What’s happening, she thought.

“What do we have here” said a voice in her ear. “Smart and brave... Wasn’t I supposed to sort you a year ago? Ah yes, you are the one they have been looking for. The Lost Child! Well, let me see. Shall I put you where your mother was? Hmm, you would do great in Ravenclaw, or Slytherin might do you good. This is a difficult decision.”

Madison felt that it was taking ages. Why is it so hard to sort me? She thought.

“I just need to think about it,” the hat replied. “Well just to make sure you do good—GRYFFINDOR!”

Madison took off the hat and walked over to the Gryffindor table, felling her knees still shaking, as they applauded. Everyone was staring at her. She sat next to Scarlet and Jonathan and felt relieved she had made it without collapsing.

Finally the last students were sorted.

“Sera”..., “Trents”..., “Turpor” and finally, “Vernt”

An old man with a crocked nose, half-moon glasses, silver hair, beard, and mustache, stood up. Scarlet told Madison that he was Albus Dumbledore. He greeted them then said: “MANGER! A! SA! FAIM!” The dishes filled with food and everyone began to eat.

“Why didn’t you tell us you were the one they were looking for?” asked Jonathan.

“Maybe she just didn’t want to say anything okay Jonathan.” Said Scarlet whacking him on the head and making him spill pumpkin juice all over his shirt.

“Hey, that hurt... Look what you made me do,” he whined.

“It’s not that I didn’t want to tell you, I just thought it wasn’t that big of a deal.” Madison replied, giggling.

“Aren’t all guys babies.” Scarlet said looking at Jonathan, who was trying to wipe the pumpkin juice from his shirt.

Finally, they finished their dessert. They sang the school song and went to their common rooms.

“Come on Madison, let’s go to bed I’m tired,” said Scarlet.

“Ok. G’night Jonathan”

They went to their dormitory and got ready for bed.

Madison tossed and turned. She envied everybody else for being able to fall asleep so easily. She couldn’t stop thinking about what the sorting hat had said. Had her mother really attended Hogwarts? She still wasn’t completely convinced, although Professor McGonagall had already told her. Another thing, what was the big deal of them not being able to find her and why had the sorting hat called her ‘The Lost Child’?
