1971 Chevy Nova radiator upgrade

The 68-71 Nova's with small blocks and air conditioning have 3 row radiator cores 20 3/4 inches wide. The surface area of the core is about 350 square inches. The big blocks have 23 inch wide cores, and there is the space, cutout, and mounting hole for a big block radiator even in Novas that came with smaller engines. The big block radiator is hard to find, but 1974 Novas with a 350 and air conditioning have a radiator (with a 23 inch wide 3 row core) that can made to fit into 68-71 Novas.

Stock Radiator

The stock heavy duty Nova radiator with a 3 row 20 3/4 inch core. About 2 inches to the right of the radiator you can barely see the bulge where the hole gets cut out for the big block radiator.
Space for the big block radiator. At the bottom of the radiator, the pan is just barely visible, with the mount for the bigger radiator. The frame is directly underneath the evaporative canister, so there is only an inch or two to go with a wider radiator on this side without raising the radiator up over the frame. The bulge on the radiator support with the screws sticking out is where the support gets cut out.
The radiator can't be moved further over on this side without moving the battery.

23" Core Radiator

Checking with the new radiator to see where the radiator support needs to be cut out for better airflow and to make sure nothing is in the way.
The hole in the radiator support after I cut it out and painted it to prevent rust.
New radiator installed, showing driver's side. Just far enough that I didn't have to move anything. I ziptied the A/C line to some other hoses to keep it off of the new radiator. If the old upper radiator hose was cut short to fit the stock radiator, then it will probably need to be replaced with a new hose.
Front view with the new radiator installed. The radiator mount is from a 1973 307 equipped vehicle that had a 26 3/8 inch 3 row core. I cut it in half and overlapped it to make it work with 3 bolts holding it in place.
The shroud is for the original radiator, so it is two inches short. If this creates a problem, then I may have to get a big block or 74 Nova fan shroud.
