Game Review

Rolling Hills Prep jumped out early in the first quarter 25-19 and never gave up the lead as they beat HCS 91-75 in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Div VAA playoffs. The Patriots came out slow in the first quarter. RHP seemed to know HCS better than HCS knew RHP. HCS' defense did not have enough intensity to handle five good players. RHP ws shooting well from the outside and also drove well to the hole. While HCS' defense has served them well most of the season even though they did not have five players capable of playing it, they survived against most teams. Against the Huskies, it did not work for them as it hasn't every Apple Valley Christian game this season. Curtis Allen did not let Jesse McDonald get into his shooting game. DJ Wright harassed Trevor Wagstaffe all night and got him in foul trouble early. Kris Stricklin stopped Loren Barton's shooting but did not stop Barton from getting 7 rebounds. Josh Hamilton, like McDonald never got as many clean looks as he normally does during the season. The only player with real success against RHP was senior Aja Ajanwachuku who ended up with 33 points and seemed to slash with immunity against RHP. They seemingly had no answer for Aja. Besides Aja's effort, it should be noted that junior Bryant Baum had six points and had his best game of the season. Despite tonight's efforts, HCS had its best season in several years and gave the fans lots of excitement this season. Now it is on to next year and another shot to get past quarterfinals. Rolling Hills Prep will now meet Riverside Christian at Riverside Christian's alternate site in the semifinals.

Game Preview

Tonight Hesperia Christian boys continue the road to Arco Arena and the CIF State Championships. They finished the season 17-7 (8-2). They have only lost two games in 2003, both times to #2 Apple Valley Christian. They have not lost a game this season in which they lead in the first quarter. HCS is lead by Aja Ajanwachuku 30 ppg, Josh Hamilton 25 ppg, and Jesse McDonald 17 ppg.

Rolling Hills Prep came in second in the Harbor League and are presently 18-8 (8-2)(2-0). They are led by junior 6' 4" Curtis Allen. Allen was the Div VAA Player of the Year last year as a sophmore. He averages about 25-30 points a game. Junior 5' 9" guard DJ Wright is the spark plug of the Huskies playing point guard. RHP's third star is 5' 10" Jason Daley. These three stars are supported by starters 5' 11" Tristan Smith and 6' 2" Kris Stricklin. Although not tall, all five have the ability to jump and will challenge HCS on the boards. HCS will have to really box out to win the rebounding war on Tuesday. RHP has problems with slashers and allowed Linfield Christian to get inside on the Huskies in their second round game. Both HCS and RHP are fast breaking teams and this skill will wash on both teams.

This game of #1 in CIF Div VAA vs #7 Div VAA may well be the best game in the Div VAA tourney in Southern Section. Both teams play off the other's weaknesses. HCS Coach Lester Simpson says that he looks forward to the challenge of playing a quality team like RHP. RHP coach Brian Knigin said he was concerned about playing the explosive HCS Patriots. The scoring of Aja Ajanwachuku and Curtis Allen may cancel each other out. The real battle may well be how Josh Hamilton and Jesse McDonald do against Jason Daley and DJ Wright. Can Jason Daley stop Josh Hamilton? Can Trevor Wagstaffe adequately guard DJ Wright? Can Loren Barton control the middle? The answers will be known on Tuesday at Hesperia when this exciting playoff game is played. A more even match may not occur this year in Div VAA playoffs.
