 The Seventh Scroll -
. . . . . . . The Central Channel

The Central Duct
The Central Channel

Many Traditions, including Chinese Acupuncture, expound the concept of the Central Channel.

The Central Channel, also called the Hara Line, is described as running axially through the center of the body, coming from above the head and descending between the feet to the earth, and this channel links the two energetic centers called "The Seat of Consciousness" and the "Tan-tien."

The Kundalini of Indian Ayurveda

Indian Ayurveda explains that the Seven major Chakras are linked by a central channel or energetic canal called the Sushumna. This channel is flanked by two intertwined, serpentine channels called the Ida and the Pingala. The spiritual force known as Kundalini resides coiled at the base of the spine. During meditation, the Kundalini is said to rise up through the Sushumna and the Chakras, and when [if] it reaches the uppermost Crown Chakra, the meditator realizes enlightenment and the energy becomes radiant in the energy field (aura) around the head.

This same symbolism comes to us today, virtually unchanged, in the form of the Caduceus, the emblem adopted by the Western Medical Establishment.

Modern versions of the Caduceus often incorrectly display only one serpent.

The Antahkarana of Tibetan Medicine

"The Antahkarana is, above all, the thread of consciousness. It is the result of the interaction of the life with the form, with substance, with matter, that produces something entirely different. We call it "consciousness". It is the process of evolution itself.

"The Antahkarana is not simply a column of light but threads of awareness spreading outwards from the individual into every sphere of his environment."

[ Compare this statement just made with Maciocia's description of the Penetrating Vessel, below ].

"These threads of awareness multiply endlessly, until in the Master, they make for omniscience.

"There are two major threads which connect the [Shen] with the man or woman in incarnation. One, the Sutratma, the thread of life, is anchored in the heart. It comes directly from the Void, reflected through the [Shen], and is fixed in the heart center at the right-hand side of the body.

"There is another thread, called the Antahkarana. This thread in anchored in the center of the head.

"Eventually, a third thread is built by the man or woman him/herself through the interaction of [Shen] and monadic energy.

"The Antahkarana is, therefore, in the first place, a bridge connecting the lower man [Tan-tien] with the soul [Shen]. Students would do well to consider the building of the Antahkarana as an extension in consciousness.

"When the individual antahkarana has been successfully started, and there is even a tenuous thread of living energy connecting the threefold personality and the Spiritual Triad [Yuan-Shen, Yuan-Jing, & Yuan-Qi], then the inflow of the will-energy [Ming] becomes possible."

The Hara of Japanese Medicine

"The auric field exists in a dimension deeper into our personality than the physical body . . . The Hara exists in a dimension deeper than the auric field. It exists on the level of Intentionality. It is an area of power within the physical body that contains the tan tien and it is the one note with which you have drawn up your physical body from your mother the earth. It is this one note that holds your body in physical manifestation. Without the one note, we would not have a body.

"The aligned hara line in a healthy person is composed of three major points connected by a laser like line called the hara line. The hara line originates in a point that is 3 and 1/2 feet above the head, that I call the individuation point, or ID point.* . It represents our first individuation out of the void."

* [Tao . . . or perhaps, "Teh," as in Tao Teh Ching].

"The hara line connects down through a point in the upper chest area that I call the soul seat. [Seat of Consciousness or Seat of Shen]. Sometimes it is called the high heart and confused with a chakra. It is not a chakra. The soul seat looks like a source of diffuse light reaching out in all directions. It is usually one to two inches in diameter but can expand to a fifteen-foot diameter in meditation.

"The hara line continues down into the tan tien [Hara] in the lower abdomen. The tan tien is located about two and one-half inches below the navel. It is about one and one-half inches in diameter, and it doesn't change in size. Healers use this point as a way of connecting to a great deal of healing energy. It connects them to the power source of the earth.

"The hara line continues down from the tan tien deep into the center of the earth's core. Here we are connected to the earth and to the sound that the center of the earth makes. By connecting down into the center of the year through the hara line, we can synchronize our field pulsations with those of the earth's magnetic field and therefore entrain energy from the earth's field.

The Straight Line of Shamanism

Don Juan mentioned to Carlos something about "the true shape of a human being." Carlos then asked him, "Don Juan, what is the true shape of a human being?" Don Juan replied, "The true shape of a human being is that of an egg." [The aura].

On another occasion, Don Juan indicated that the ancient masters worked at changing their shape from that of an egg into that of a straight line.

The Penetrating Vessel of Chinese Medicine

Chong

"The Penetrating Vessel is very complex as it has many different functions at different levels. In a way, it could be considered to be the origin of the other extraordinary vessels (excluding the governing and directing vessels) as it originates in the Kidneys and spreads its Qi all over the body at the Defensive Qi level. When this energy arrives at the relevant starting points, it gives rise to the Yin and Yang linking vessels, the Yin and the Yang heel vessels, and the Girdle vessel.

"The Penetrating Vessel is described as the "Sea of the five Yin organs and six Yang organs" as it is a fundamental vessel which connects the Pre-Heaven and the Post-Heaven Qi. It is also known as the "Sea of the 12 channels" because it branches out in many small capillary-like vessels that circulate Defensive Qi."

[Compare this statement with the description of the Antahkarana, above].

"It is connected it to the Kidneys as it originates in them and it distributes Essence all over the body, and is connected to the … heart, as it flows through it."

--- The Foundations of Chinese Medicine, 1989.

The Ida and the Pingala are said to be the counterparts of the Chinese Ren and Du Channels.

The Hara Line
A Comprehensive View

The Hara Line has four contact points (Tao, Shen, Hara, and Earth).

Tao - The Universal energy that connects with the top of the Central Channel is the Tao, the Void, Heaven - The realm of consciousness and energy so pure that it has not yet differentiated into Yin and Yang. It is called "Nothing," yet it is the goal of mystics and meditators. Oneness in consciousness with this energy is called Samadhi, Sartori, or Bliss. It intersects the body at Du-20.

Shen - The "Seat of the Soul" is the focal point for consciousness (the mind at rest or in meditation) located at the level of Ren-19.

Hara - The "Tan-tien" or "One-point" is a a reservoir of Qi for the whole of the body. It is the place from which Qi emanates and to which it returns and is thus [named] the Sea of Qi. The Hara is an energetic piece of mother earth, drawn from the core of the planet, that allows us to be independent, vital beings. The Hara is linked to Jing (Essence) and its derivative, Ming (Destiny).

Earth - The core of the earth vibrates at 9.96 Hertz (cycles per second or "cps") - We will refer to this as the rounded-off figure of 10 cps. The Hara Line connects this planetary core vibration to the Hara, the One-point; when properly connected, the Hara will glow energetically (a person will feel heat) and it will be vibrating at 10 cps, a frequency we all can feel.

When NASA first sent astronauts into space, they were all ill upon returning to earth. For a while, no one could solve this mystery. Then, applying the knowledge of earth's 10 cps frequency (a well-established, scientific fact), tiny 10 cps transmitters were placed inside the space capsules. Lo and behold, the illnesses ceased! Human vitality, it seems, requires a constant input of mother earth's specific vibration in order to stay healthy, even if that frequency is artificially generated.

A Strong Hara Line is located in the midline, superior-inferior axis of the the human body and is straight, energized, and well-grounded into the earth's core. Each of the four nodes (contact points) on the line (Earth, Hara, Shen, Tao) are balanced and well-connected to each other along the laser-like hara line.

Many well-trained Martial Artists, are able hold a perfect alignment of the lower portion of the hara line connecting the earth and the Tan-tien. A few can hold a strong alignment of the middle part of the line from the Tan-tien to the Seat of Consciousness. But (generally) they do not know about, and cannot control, the upper part of the line - unless they are also experienced Meditators as well as Martial Artists.

Note: Some researchers feel that the Hara dimension can be equated with the fifth dimension of theoretical physics.

When the Hara line is straight, an individual tends to act harmoniously with other people. If the line is bent, unraveled, broken, or distorted, disharmony tends to be created. We even have a saying for it – it’s called,

"Being straight with Someone."
