Basics of Earning A Merit Badge
As a Scout goes for each merit badge, here are the steps he needs to take: 1. Talk over plans for the merit badge with the Scoutmaster. Ask him to assign a buddy to work with you on the merit badge. Remember, the buddy system and two-deep leadership should be followed at all times. Ask him to sign a merit badge card. 2. Read the merit badge pamphlet for that particular badge to become more familiar with it (available at troop HQ of local library). 3. Ask the Scoutmaster for a list of approved counselors. Call the one that lives the closest and make an appointment. 4. Be on time for the appointment. Take along the merit badge card, a notebook, paper and pencil and any other material that might be needed. Wear the Scout uniform, of course, and be neat and clean in appearance. 5. Be attentive to the information the counselor offers. Take notes on what needs to be done. Be sure everything is clear. Set a time for the next appointment to save a phone call. Note the date and time on the notepad. 6. Then, begin the actual work on the merit badge. Call the counselor if anything is not clear. 7. When the work on the badge is complete, go to the second appointment. Be ready to pass off the badge or get more information.
