Rescue Resource Network Defining Charities |
What is a Charity?
A charity is an organization made up of volunteers to help those in need.
In the instance of equine rescue groups, the parties in need are horses who have been abused, neglected, starved or are headed for the slaughterhouse. Some horses are donated to rescue groups by their owners if the owner can no longer care for them, many are adopted out to good homes.
Many groups solicit volunteers and funds which are not true charities. To know if a group is really a charity, use the resources listed on our Non-Profit Resources page. There is an ever growing number of groups calling themselves rescues which are in reality doing nothing themselves to help horses but are asking for donations to fund projects they claim to be related to rescue. Generally, such groups are not reputable and should not be dealt with. Please check our Links page and our Seal Of Approval page for a start finding groups with excellent references, we will be listing more on a regular basis.
