Good Date Movies
Updated September 15, 2003
One Christmas, one of my students asked me for a suggestion for a movie to watch during his holiday.
Sadly, I couldn't think of a good one at the time, but I decided to start a page
of good light movies for times like this.
If you have any suggestions for additions to this page, please sign my guestbook with them. Thanks!
Charade
Going back a few years for this one, but with the popularity of Audrey Hepburn here in Japan, it's worth mentioning. She plays a widow who has to find out who killed her husband and why. Charmingly matched with Cary Grant this little drama sparkles.
Shrek
This Oscar winning animated movie is not only incredibly funny, but sweet too. With the voices of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy. It's about an ugly green ogre who meets his match in Princess Fiona. This one is not just for children...some of the jokes are very mature.
While You Were Sleeping
This light romantic comedy stars Sandra Bullock
and Bill Pullman.
It tells the tale of a lonely woman who imagines herself the fiancee of an unconsious
man. Complications arise when she falls for the brother of her "fiancee".
Chances Are
It's a few years old, but I love it anyway. Robert Downey Jr. , Mary Stuart Masterson, Ryan O'Neal
and Cybil Shepard.
It's a madcap comedy about reincarnation and love. A genuine hoot.
French Kiss
It's not the greatest movie, in fact it's a bit silly and I find that Meg Ryan
is a tad annoying, but it stars the wonderful Kevin Kline
who does a great French accent...keep listening through the final credits for Kevin's
singing. Meg comes to France to win back her boyfriend, but runs into a thief who
steals her heart instead.
Four Weddings And A Funeral
Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowall ,
and Kirsten Scott Thomas
star in a hilarious film about a man and his attempts to avoid matrimony.
Strictly Ballroom
This Australian movie about the wacky world of ballroom dancing is a real gem. Starring
Paul Mercurio
and Tara Morice
it tells the tale of an "ugly duckling" and how she finds courage to dance in public!
A great fun film.
The Cutting Edge
D.B. Sweeney
and Moira Kelly
take on the competitive world of ice skating. She's a princess, he's a former hockey
player who was injured. They start skating together, and the sparks fly-on and off
ice.
Tremors
Kevin Bacon
and Fred Ward
play two handymen who live in the desert. People are disappearing in quite nasty
ways and it turns out that there are giant earthworms who are a bit hungry. There
is an element of horror in this film so it isn't for the faint at heart, but I find
it great fun.
The Princess Bride
Robin Wright, Cary Elwes
and Mandy Patinkin
star in this modern fairy tale. Wesley leaves to make his fortune so he can marry
Buttercup. After many years when he fails to return, she agrees to marry the Prince.
Before her wedding she is kidnapped. This film is a little gem. It has swordfighting, romance, and comedy. Something for everyone.
Before Sunrise
This is basically a 2 person movie. Ethan Hawke
and Julie Delpys
play two people who meet on a train and spend one interesting night together in Vienna,
Austria. It's very romantic and very interesting. The couple walk and talk through the city as they have no money for hotels. It is so intelligent. By the
end of the film I was thinking of gifts they could give each other at their reunion.
A beautiful little movie. See it with someone that you like to talk to!
A Walk in the Clouds
Keanu Reeves stars as a chocolate salesman who helps out a girl in trouble. She is
from an old Spanish American family; very traditional, so to prevent her family from
disowning her, Keanu pretends to be her husband. They fall in love, but he's already
married. This is a beautifully filmed movie just dripping with romance.
It Could Happen to You
Supposedly this is based on a true story, but this little film with Nicolas Cage
, Rosie Perez
and Bridget Fonda
, is pure fantasy. Nicolas Cage plays a nice guy cop who promises the nice waitress
that serves him in a restaurant half of his lottery winnings in lieu of a tip. Well,
his ticket wins and he keeps his word, to the dismay of his wife. By the end I was
wondering if it would have a happy ending....it does :-)
The Truth About Cats and Dogs
A modern day Cyrano with a feminine twist. This sweet movie stars Janeane Garofolo
, Uma Thurman
and Ben Chaplin
. I liked the fact that the Uma Thurman turned down the guy because it would hurt
her friend. A charming, funny little film.
Notting Hill
Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts
have a meet-cute. She's a rich movie star, he's an impoverished bookseller. He thinks
they won't connect, of course they do. Despite Hugh doing his usual stuttering it's
an enjoyable film. I rented it and watched it twice in a weekend.
Bull Durham
Kevin Costner
, Susan Sarandon
, and Tim Robbins.
Despite this being a film about baseball, it's also a film about grown ups falling
in love. The dialogue is smart and funny, the characters are rich and well drawn.
It's a sexy movie too, so not suitable for kids!
Roxanne
Steve Martin
and Daryl Hannah
in an older film that's incredibly sweet and romantic. Martin plays CD Barnes, a
Cyrano de Bergerac lookalike who falls for the lovely young scientist who comes to
town. He's the local fire chief who can smell fires from miles away. Watch for
the insult scene in the bar....pure enjoyment. See this film with someone you love!
