Foot washing
John 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
Jesus is the Passover lamb, as John the Baptist declared at the beginning of Jesus' ministry, at age 30, the required age to be a priest of God in Israel.
John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
His hour was come
All have a time allotted to serve God and then we who are God's children go home to our heavenly resting place. Do you know your calling? Jesus new his calling and purpose which would end with him on the cross and then the resurrection. He spoke of this several times to his disciples, but they were not listening with understanding. From the time that Peter testified that he was the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
Mat 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
Mat 17:22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
Mat 17:23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
Mat 20:18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,
Mat 20:19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.
that he should depart out of this world unto the Father
He came from the Father and must return to him.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end
1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
1 John 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
John 13:2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;
The devil may put thoughts in our mind, but if they are in your heart, he has destroyed you. Judas had shown his heart earlier.
John 12:4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,
John 12:5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
John 12:6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Jer 17:10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Mat 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Mat 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
Mat 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Mat 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Mat 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
John 13:3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
Jesus knew who he was and his position of respect and authority. He was about to show his disciples an illustrated sermon.
John 13:4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
John 13:5 After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
What did this say about Jesus?
John 13:6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
John 13:7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
John 13:8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
This was symbolic of his washing away our sins.
Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Isa 1:19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
Isa 1:20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Titus 3:6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
John 13:9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
John 13:10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
John 13:11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
He knows our hearts. He knew Judas was not one of the saved disciples, yet he washed his feet as well.
Does water baptism place you into God's family? No, not unless your heart is changed. Just as Judas, some only get wet, there is no change.Ye must be born of the Spirit of God.
John 13:12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
What had he done?
John 13:13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
Is Jesus your Lord and master? Do you say this not really meaning it?
John 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
We are not to do good works to be seen by men, so that we look good. We serve others so that God will receive glory.
Mat 6:2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Mat 6:3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
Mat 6:4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
Mat 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Mat 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
John 13:15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
Follow Jesus, do as he has done.
Mat 8:16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
Mat 8:17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Mark 6:10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.
Mark 6:11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
Mark 6:12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.
Mark 6:13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
John 13:16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
John 13:17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
Do what? Serve others, meeting needs, having compassion and speaking the word of truth. We are not to be proud in ourselves, nor are we to be downcast, We are of God, servants of others. By our good works others will see Jesus and know we are different. Be joyful as you serve others. If we are depressed and barely holding on, why would others wish to have what we have to offer?
John 12:26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
Betrayed by a friend
John 13:18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
Jesus was speaking to his disciples, to be servants as he served them by washing their feet. He spoke that not all are chosen.
Mat 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
To be a guest eating with someone in this culture, was a great show of friendship and hospitality. To lift up the heal against the one giving the meal, was a great insult and sin. Jesus knew that Judas would betray him. He quoted Psalm 41:9, as a fulfillment of prophecy.
Psa 41:9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
Psa 41:10 But thou, O LORD, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them.
Psa 41:11 By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.
Psa 41:12 And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever.
Psa 41:13 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.
John 13:19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
Many seek proof of the lordship of Jesus Christ. He spoke of future events and when they came to pass, they proved that he heard from the Father. He knew from the beginning that Judas would betray him. He did not force him to do this, but he knew that he would. Was not Matthew a tax collector? They were know for their thievery, yet Matthew, unlike Judas, believed, and repented of his sins.
John 13:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
Now Jesus talked to his faithful disciples, how they would go forth, some would be received with their message of hope, and as representatives of Jesus, they would be received as if they were Jesus. This is our calling. We represent Jesus to a lost and sinful people. When they receive the gospel message and are saved, they receive Jesus. He was also making a plea to Judas, for many will not receive him and some would betray him.
John 13:21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
Mark 14:19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
If Jesus could be troubled in spirit, so can we. The Holy Spirit showed him what was to come. The Holy Spirit gives us warnings. We are given spiritual discernment and often the spirit will alert us.
Jesus was touched by those morning the death of Lazarus.
John 11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
The Spirit of truth will alert us to false teachers and false prophets.
John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
The spirit discerns when someone is lying, as with Ananias and Saphira,
Acts 5:9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
By faith, we minister in the Spirit
Gal 3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
John 13:22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
They had no idea who would betray the Lord.
1 Sam 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
John 13:23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
In this culture, they laid around a low table when they ate. One had his head against the master's chest. This was John, the author of this gospel. (He wrote as the Holy Spirit directed him to write.) He referred to himself in four places as the disciple "whom Jesus loved". (John 13:23, 20:2, 21:7, 21:20)
John 13:24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
John 13:25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
Peter and John asked the Lord who it was. Then Jesus shows them, but they did not see.
Mat 26:24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.
Mat 26:25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
Jesus spoke in agreement with Judas; is it I? became, it is I. But, the disciples did not hear or have ears to understand.
John 13:26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
John 13:27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
John 13:28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
What had happened? Jesus revealed who would betray him by giving Judas bread dipped in soup. He had answered Judas, agreeing with his question; "is it I?" Satan entered Judas and Jesus knew this. He said do your work swiftly. The others were blinded by satan or they just did not have spiritual eyes to see. No one understood.
How often satan intercepts words from another, puts a twist on them and hurls them into a heart as a fiery dart. He messes with our hearing, sometimes he just comes with confusion and steals the seed word away.
Mat 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
We must learn to hear with spiritual ears.
John 13:29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
We must be careful of what we think to be true. They had been commanded earlier by the voice of God to hear the Son, listen to him. We must listen to Jesus through the Spirit and then through the word to be sure it is His voice. We are not to make our own truth. What is your "truth" based on? Is it some elses idea? It could be from another spirit. Can you support the truth from God's Holy Bible?
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
John 13:30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
Night is often the time of evil works.
John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
John 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
John 13:31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
John 13:32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
How is Jesus glorified? He fulfilled his purpose being obedient unto death. Through this he would be the savior of all who trust in him. He would be given the name above all names with all power. Every knee will bow to him.
John 13:33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
Only Jesus could die for our sins and be raised to the right hand of the Father in glory. Jesus knowing he soon would be taken from them gives them important counsel. What is the most important thing?
John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
This is a greater commandment then the law which stated;
Lev 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
This new commandment is not based on self love, but rather the love of Christ. His love was a sacrificial love.
John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Phil 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Phil 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Phil 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
John 13:36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.
You do not have what it takes to follow me now, Peter. But, you will have power from above after the Holy Ghost comes to you. After the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus.
John 13:37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
Peter was willing, but this would be a spiritual battle, he did not yet have spiritual strength.
John 13:38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
The Lord knew what was coming. Peter boasted in the flesh, but the flesh is weak. He like Judas would also betray the Lord. Peter would find forgiveness, Judas went to the wrong ones for forgiveness, those who plotted against Jesus, the religious leaders in Jerusalem. Forgiveness was and is in the Lord Jesus Christ. Before the cock would crow three times, Peter would deny the Lord three times. Remember, if we fail, we can be restored again in our Lord Jesus Christ.
