John 14

Encouraging Words

John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

Do not be troubled, as one who has no hope. Jesus said what was needed; to believe in God and to believe in His Son, Jesus.

1 Pet 3:14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
1 Pet 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
1 Pet 3:16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

Believe in God and also in the name of Jesus.

1 John 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

John 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

I picture a mansion as a two story Victorian home. Is this what is meant from the Greek word: mone, which is translated mansion? The thought is, many rooms or dwelling places. God is Spirit, so His house is a spiritual house. Where does God's Spirit dwell on earth? In our bodies, the temples of the Holy Spirit. Our spirit dwells now in heavenly places with Christ Jesus. He is in us and we are in Him. Our new glorified Spiritual bodies will dwell with Christ in the presence of the Father in a dwelling place prepared for us. We are unable to picture what this might be.

1 Cor 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
1 Cor 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Jesus gives us assurance, that through faith in him, we will have an eternal dwelling place in the Father's house and that he personally will come for us. He is coming for us and where he is, there we shall be also.

John 14:4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

You should know where I am going; to the Father, and he had told them that he was going by the way of the cross.

Mat 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

John 14:5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Thank you Thomas for asking that question. Now all may know the way to God the Father. It is by way of faith in Jesus Christ.

John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
John 10:2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

There is no other way, in spite of the objections of others. Jesus is the way to the Father. Our Father God, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Perhaps others have a different father? A god that opposes the God of Israel. The non believing Jewish leaders were told straight from Jesus who their father was.

John 8:42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
John 8:43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
John 8:45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

John 14:7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

Jesus is the image of the invisible Father. He is the image of God, come into a fleshly man.

Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Col 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Col 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

He is pre eminent, the holiest of all who lived and breathed. In him is the breath of life, the Word of God who spoke all into existence.

John 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

Now it is Philips turn to inquire of the Lord; show us the Father.

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Heb 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

No sinful flesh can see God, He is Spirit and a consuming fire to sin. Jesus came with the nature of God, in a friendly human body, he being willing to be killed for our sins, so that our sins would not kill us, in God's presence. He took our sins and gave us his pure, holy nature. Jesus then took up his life again, proving that he is God the Son, the eternal life giver.

John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
John 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

The word of God was spoken by Jesus, and if you cannot hear, look upon the signs and wonders that follow. Word and works go together.

James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
James 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.

We are known as much by our works as we are by our words. We must live a sanctified life, given to God's service and glory. Jesus, tells his disciples intimate truths of his relationship to God the Father.

John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Many see this in terms of doing great signs and wonders before an awe inspired crowd. This is the circus mindset of some, we draw crowds promising miracles and signs and wonders. Isn't this the mindset of Simon the sorcerer, in the book of acts?

Acts 8:13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

Acts 8:18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
Acts 8:19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
Acts 8:20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
Acts 8:21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
Acts 8:22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
Acts 8:23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
Acts 8:24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

The greatest miracle is a new soul birthed into the kingdom of God. With the birthing comes the responsibility to care and disciple them, so they will not be ignorant, as was Simon who was at one time a sorcerer. There are more now in the fields to harvest than when Jesus ministered. Yes, signs and wonders follow believing and trusting in Jesus. I was healed of cancer, some are healed in an instant. Angels protect us and do supernatural things, stopping cars, keeping us safe in terrible auto wrecks, many miracles happen, and many are explained away by unbelief. God's power is still at work through the Holy Spirit, all in the name of Jesus.

John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
John 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

James, the half brother of Jesus, wrote about how we should ask in prayer for our needs.

James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Jesus told us many things about prayer

Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Luke 11:10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Luke 11:11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
Luke 11:12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

We are the children of God, by faith in Jesus. As children we have access to the Father.

Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

The Comforter

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Obedience is required of a servant and disciple. We are to obey his word as found in the Bible.

Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

God does not abide in fear, confusion, hate and anger.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

The word Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is the one who comes along side of us, to help us as if Christ Jesus was personally with us. He is teacher, explainer, and our wisdom and strength from God and much more, for He is the presence of God and our connection with God.

Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

We abide in Him in the truth of his word, obeying Him and loving him and others as he loved us. Then He sends the Comforter, His presence, the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit to abide in us. Without the Holy Ghost, we are not his.

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Rom 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

You must be born again of the Holy Spirit.

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
John 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

God comes within, making us alive, wherein we were dead in trespasses and sins, now we have newness of life.

2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

Jesus and God the Father will be with all believers, through the Holy Spirit. They are one, difficult as it may be to understand. God in three personalities, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Not only this, but through the Holy Spirit we are one with God, an awesome place to be.

John 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
John 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

In that day, when we shall live in the spirit in the day that we receive His Spirit. The first outpouring was at Pentacost.

John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

God wants us to obey him and love him, then we receive from him. Rebellion is a serious offense. Rebellion seeks it's own way despises authority, and opposes the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the spirit of the end times, the antichrist spirit.

1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
1 John 2:23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
Mal 4:6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

John 14:22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
John 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
John 14:25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

Again, Jesus separates the disciples from those of the world. Those who believe in him, obey him and love him. The world hates Jesus and the word. They want to do their lusts without being accountable to God.

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
John 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

The Comforter, is a teacher of truth, not of himself, but whatsoever things He hears from Jesus he will bring to our remembrance. First we must study God's word so he can bring it to us again, in our remembrance. If we know the word we know His voice.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

This is one of my favortite verses. Peace, the peace of God brought to us through the Holy Spirit of God. Not as the world gives, and takes away. But an everlasting peace of God, so let not your heart be troubled or afraid. Jesus is in the boat with you.

Mark 4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Mark 4:40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

John 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

Jesus will keep His promise, he will come again. He told them if they loved him, they would rejoice. For he is returning to glory. His Father is the Most High God of all creation, a spirit. Spirit is greater than flesh. Jesus then, was flesh with God's nature, the essence of God, in flesh. He was to rerturn back to the glory he had from the beginning.

John 14:29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

All that he spoke would come to pass, for he spoke the Father's words. We can believe on His word. Others may or may not keep their word, God always keeps His word.

John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

Jesus must endure the persecution of the devil, by those who are the son's of perdition.

John 14:31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence. How was Jesus' love shown for God the Father? He obeyed him. Do you want God to promote you? Obey him.

Mat 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Phil 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Phil 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
