12.09.99 - Orgy Ponders Love And Rockets Tour As New Video Debuts

Folks who caught Orgy on this year's Family Values tour and last weekend's edition of MTV's "Fashionably Loud" may get to see even more of the group soon.

The band is currently in discussions with Love And Rockets about an opening slot on the seminal goth rock outfit's upcoming tour.

Orgy is also hoping to up its visibility with its new video, a cover of New Order's "Blue Monday." The clip, which is thick on sci-fi atmosphere, was added to the MTV playlist this week.

The band shot the video with porn-director-turned-music-video-director Gregory Dark (Sublime, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Ice Cube) in Redondo Beach, California at an Edison power plant over two days in mid-November. The group took to an asbestos-lined hallway in an underground tunnel without electricity for part of the shoot, which also found a child morphing into frontman Jay Gordon.

We'll keep you posted on Orgy's tour plans.

09.18.99 - Jay Gordon

Due to throat surgery, all dates have been cancelled until after the new year. Jay is having throat surgery that has been postponed over and over again. Jay's throat was damaged when he was younger and had surgery then. He continued to sing although his voice sounded strained and groggy. The time has come around again, and its time for another surgery.

07.13.99 - Allstar news short

A little birdie tells allstar that Orgy has been receiving all kinds of death threats across the Internet regarding their current trip to the Big Apple and that as a precautionary measure, they have hired armed guards for the occasion (the F.B.I. is rumored to be involved as well, but for God's sake, they haven't had that many hits!) A source close to the band admits that there are rumored death threats but that the addition of security into the band's entourage is merely a common step as a band climbs up the charts. (Uh, or for a band that is hated with unbridled passion among some alt.rock fans, not to mention some New Order fans.) If you live in New York, you can see how it all plays out for yourself Tuesday (July 13) night when the band makes an appearance at a Manhattan HMV at 6 p.m.

04.26.99 - Orgy Shoot 'Stitches' Video

Orgy took a break from touring to shoot a video for "Stitches" in Long Beach, Calif., on Thursday (April 22) and Friday. Rocky Morton (Gravity Kills) directed the clip, which a Reprise Records spokesperson said has a futuristic look and uses the music-video process and its conventions as a motif. It's expected to be released in about three weeks. "Stitches," Orgy's first single from their debut album, Candyass, has been re-released following the industrial pop-rockers' successful cover of New Order's "Blue Monday."

03.30.99- Scott Weiland, Martyn LeNoble, Orgy's Jay Gordon Record With Ashley Hamilton

While Elektra figures out what to do with Ashley Hamilton's in-the-can Fine album, the actor/musician son of George Hamilton has been recording yet another project with some very famous friends.

Dubbed the Wondergirls, Hamilton (vocals/guitar) is joined by Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland (guest vocals/songwriting/some additional production), ex-Porno For Pyros bassist Martyn LeNoble (bass), ex-Failure guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar), actor Jared Leto's brother Shannon Leto (some drums), Orgy singer Jay Gordon (keyboards/some songwriting), and Fine guitarist Chris Lloyd (guitar).

The group is currently in a Los Angeles studio with producer Josh Abraham (Orgy, Deadsy), and will most likely have an album, which looks to be more edgy and electronic-sounding (think '80s electronic ala Love and Rockets) than Hamilton's more pop/rock- oriented Fine, out on Flip/143/Atlantic this fall.

As for Fine's debut, Against The View, which was produced by Victor Indrizzo (Drizz, Magnificent Bastards), Elektra says the album's not yet inked in on their release schedule, but the label hopes to see it hit stores later this summer. It was originally slated for release in February.

03.03.99- Orgy Seduces Modern Rock Radio With Candyass

Quintet takes hold with heavy nationwide airplay for cover of New Order's 'Blue Monday.'

Contributing Editor Christopher O'Connor reports:

It was the kind of scene you might expect from a band called Orgy -- a hard-edged, theatrical lovefest.

Five extremely tall, handsome men stood onstage at New York's Irving Plaza and thrashed out a set of industrial-rock music to waves of acclaim from the crowd.

Lead singer Jay Gordon wore eye makeup and a red sweatshirt; two strands of hair were molded into devil's horns on his head. As he shouted his lyrics, he gazed intently into the eyes of audience members. Guitarist Ryan Shuck rocked back and forth with abandon and blasted through riff after riff, but his spiky blond hair didn't move one inch.

The occasion was local radio station WXRK's annual Lodo Show, produced this year on Feb. 23. Orgy -- with heavy national airplay for their cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" were stealing the Show.

"It's definitely getting out of hand," Shuck said of the single's success. "People are freaking out on the streets when we walk by."

By the end of their brief seven-song set, the band members -- all in their 20s -- had thrown two sweaty towels and a guitar pick to the fans, who seemed to outnumber the followers of the show's nominal headliners, glam-punk band D Generation. In fact, Orgy's fans chanted the band's name incessantly -- "Orgy! Orgy! Orgy!" -- during the sets of opening acts Dovetail Joint and Boiler Room.

Orgy's debut album, Candyass, has risen to #59 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Much of the recording snarls. Its abrasive rock sound displays a kinship with the music of David Bowie, Korn, and Love and Rockets. So it's remarkable that Orgy's route to commercial success is being paved by, of all things, a cover of "Blue Monday" -- a classic '80s dance-rock track.

Since modern rock radio embraced the punked-up version of the New Order song over Orgy's own choice for a single, the spare and moody "Stitches" (RealAudio excerpt), Shuck said the band has become smothered with attention. And that's just what they prefer, he said.

Southern California-based Orgy is the first act signed to metal-funk band Korn's Elementree Records, a subsidiary of Reprise. Shuck and Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis grew up together in Bakersfield, Calif., and are close friends and former bandmates from pre-Korn days.

Despite their success, Shuck said the bandmembers still sign autographs for anyone who asks, even if their following is becoming massive. Krayge Tyler, Orgy's sound technician, said he believes the gesture shows the band's good nature.

"They're not pretending to be nice," Tyler explained. "They really are that nice."

"Blue Monday" now is at #11 on the Billboard modern rock chart. The track, said Shuck, was the result of Orgy's desire to include a new-wave cover on the album as an ode to their pubescent days. The choice, he said, was a spontaneous one, and the track took only two hours to record and mix.

"We just kind of translated it," Shuck said. "You can't f--- up a song like that."

Along with the contingent of pierced, tattooed and glammed-out teenagers that comprised most of the band's audience at Irving Plaza, "Blue Monday" is attracting a new radio-friendly following for the band. Daisy Barbaresco, a photographer and New Order fan, attended the concert with her two young daughters, Tracy and Sophia. Orgy's version of the song is what drew her to the event.

Barbaresco said the two versions of "Blue Monday" compare favorably. "I like the basic elements of the song, its authenticity," Barbaresco said.

Shuck said he and the others members of Orgy -- Amir Derakh on guitar-synthesizer, Paige Haley on bass and Bobby Hewitt on drums -- are proud of Candyass.

They recorded it over several alcohol-soaked weeks early last year in a rented ski chalet in Truckee, Calif., off of Lake Tahoe on the Nevada border, according to Shuck. The guitarist joked that the five musicians "increased our alcohol problem by 10 times" as they completed the work.

They are especially proud, they say, of the absence of conventional keyboards from the album and their stage show.

The band doesn't use pre-recorded decks of keyboard noise in its live shows, either. Hewitt plays electric drums, but most of Orgy's industrial noise comes from a combination of Shuck's feedback and Derakh's guitar-synthesizer.

"We try to push it," Shuck said. "We play completely live. There's no sequencers."

Regardless of whatever musical innovations they may stumble upon, a hit song is what brought Orgy to this promotional gig for nearly 1,100 people.

Still, Stacey DeLorenzo, who described herself as an avid fan of the group, said she believes the band has enough appeal to escape "one-hit wonder" status.

"Their other stuff is a lot different," she said. "That song can be surpassed."

01.25.99 - Orgy Talks About Trading Family Values For Love And Rockets

What do pimp rockers Korn have in common with goth rockers Love And Rockets?

Perhaps the one and only answer to that question is Orgy, the new wave-inspired hard rock outfit who opened Korn's Family Values tour last year and will open Love And Rockets upcoming spring tour.

With the exception of the involvement of Ticketmaster and the presence of roadies, Orgy may be the only element of last year's hard-hitting Family Values tour (which boasted Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Rammstein, and the aforementioned Korn) turning up on the Love And Rockets tour.

"It's gonna be a lot different because, it's smaller venues and whatnot," Orgy frontman Jay Gordon offered in anticipation of the upcoming tour. "And Jonathan (Davis, Korn vocalist) and Munky (Korn guitarist), and Fieldy (Korn bassist) and Fred (Durst) from Limp (Bizkit)...those guys are like your next door neighbors, like your friends, your buddies, you know? We know who (Love And Rockets singer) Daniel Ash is, but he has no idea who we are. You know what I mean?"

"Well, we didn't know Rammstein," Orgy guitarist Amir Derakh added. "We didn't know Rammstein either," Gordon said. "We got along with them. We destroyed quite a few dressing rooms, actually, together."

"I think we'll, it'll still be the same Orgy on tour," guitarist Ryan Shuck noted.

"We're gonna have a good time, either way, you know," Gordon said. "We're going out to have fun and, you know, destroy your town."

"I think it will be funner to play more small places too," Shuck added. "You know, playing big places is fun, but I think smaller places will be really cool too, you know, it's a different vibe."

Orgy will hook into that vibe in March when they hit the road with Love And Rockets. Before that, you can catch Orgy's first video, "Blue Monday," in MTV's buzz bin, and you can catch more from our interview with them in a feature that will turn up right here on Wednesday.

01.22.99 - Orgy Guitarist Says Studio Time With Korn Frontman No Big Deal

So did Orgy guitarist Amir Derakh hook up with Korn frontman Jonathan Davis in the studio to work on a Davis solo album?

Not according to the guitarist.

Speaking with MTV News this week, Derakh moved beyond his initial "no comment" to confirm that he had gone into the studio with Davis recently, but that some are blowing the session out of proportion.

"We just did some playing around," Derakh explained. "It got out, and people made some way big..."

"Everybody's making a big, like, 'Woah!'" Orgy frontman Jay Gordon offered. "They, they kinda jammed at the studio. You know, kinda messed around with ideas and stuff, I think." "It was all over the Internet and, you know, we're just screwing around," Derakh concluded. In more immediate news, Orgy has firmed up an opening slot on the road with 80s goth rock outfit Love And Rockets. The tour is expected to launch in March, though no dates have been confirmed yet.

Before that, you can catch Orgy in MTV's buzz bin as the band's video for "Blue Monday" has been named a Buzzworthy clip.

01.20.99 - Orgy Talks About Landing In Buzz Bin

Futuristic new wave metallers Orgy got a bit of a boost this week when they learned that their debut video, for their cover of New Order's "Blue Monday," attained Buzzworthy status with MTV.

The sci-fi-flavored clip , directed by video vet Gregory Dark (Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Ice Cube, etc.), now joins Eminem, Limp Bizkit, and Stardust in the buzz bin where it will fall on millions of impressionable young eyes. Perhaps some of those viewers will be able to help the band figure out what exactly is going on in the video.

"Not the slightest inkling what any of it is about," Orgy frontman Jay Gordon told MTV News on Tuesday of his knowledge of the clip. "I know there's a little kid that does this little, morphs into me situation. He's supposed to be me I guess as a young'n."

"He's much better behaved though," guitarist Ryan Shuck noted.

"He is. He's much better behaved," Gordon agreed. "There's that, and then the parents are kind of strange, hiding something from the kid kind of a thing. And there's the silver girls that we kind of created. We had a whole different plan, and the director had a whole different plan, but it all fused together nicely, at least frame by frame. Whether it makes sense or not, you know, I don't know. It just worked out."

Apparently so.

The Buzz Clip news is just the latest mark along Orgy's rocket-like career trajectory, which also saw the band signed six months after its formation, and saw the band play its first live gigs ever on last year's Family Values tour.

The group will try to maintain the roll its on with a spring tour with Love And Rockets
