Success Story
by
Pascal Gravel

Ever since I was a small boy, I always admired the people who programmed the music at weddings and other venues of the type.  I was always sitting with them when I could and talked with them.  I don’t remember what was said or if it made any sense but it was a dream of mine to one day do what they did.  It seemed so much fun and easy to do.  When I reached High School, I became friends with two of the schools DJ’s.  They were both older than I was but were always there to answer my questions about this fascinating hobby and even brought me along from time to time.

In January of 1992, that dream became a reality.  My parents gave me a mixer and other equipment for Djing for Christmas.  Also my uncle who was in a band, lent me an adequate sound system to perform all the duties needed for a mobile DJ.  At that time, the market in my area was in need of new blood to surface in this industry.  I just happen to be at the right time.  My first dance took place a few weeks later.  At this time I was 16 and still had my temporary driver’s permit.  Because of this my parents played a great role in the beginning of this great hobby.  They were my taxi from place to place on Friday and Saturday nights.  For the remaining of the 1992 school year, I organized one dance per month for the local high schools in a town hall.  I also spent many hours gathering new music to upgrade my collection. It was then that P + Music was born.

It was in September of 1992 that the dances became a part time job.  The dances were a great success with everyone in town and gaining popularity.  I purchased a new sound system to cater to the halls I was using.  This is when I started the dances every 2 to 3 weeks and hired a staff of students to help me out with the large duties of maintaining a safe dance for all who attended.  I was also became my high school’s newest DJ.  The dances ran from September to mid May for the next few years.  I saw a few other DJ’s trying to make it into the market but all failed because of low financial discipline.  Only one stayed along with myself who is my cousin.  We later joined forces in the school environment to create a better show for our fellow friends and students.  This was the greatest time of my life.

This hobby became a large part of my life and I made many new friends who I still see today.  The Teen dances came to an end in mid 1998 when I decided to pursue my college education in the Ottawa area.  I’ve learned a great deal in my years of running these events even though my parents’ help was a very big part of my great success since they were behind me every step of the way.  I couldn’t have done it without them.  Even today, I still DJ in the Ottawa area for Virtronics Disc Jockey Service.  This hobby will stay with me for many years to come because I love it so much.  The feeling you get from the happiness of the people you make dance is very rewarding and priceless.
