The Southwest

California: Due 9/29
Beverly Adams, Dos Caminos Elementary, Camarillo, CA
October 1, 1999
Well, I made it to sunny southern California and the weather here is all they said it would be- temperatures in the 80s and sunny. The class had a party for me out under the trees. We ate corn tortilla chips dipped in guacamole made from avocadoes grown in several of the students’ backyards. We also had fresh strawberries and lemonade.
As Mrs. Adams drove through Camarillo, I saw avocado, lemon, and orange trees. She showed me the fields where strawberries are grown. Tomatoes and many salad vegetables are grown here too. She told me that I should come back in spring when there are fields of the bright orange California poppies. I think I saw some quail though. They have funny little feathers on top of their head and they hardly fly at all. We drove just a few miles to the beach and watched the sun set over the ocean.
California is a big state. It would take me about a day to drive to Sacramento, the state capital, and I would still not see all of the state. There are mountains and deserts, ocean and fields. There are giant redwood trees growing in the northern part of the state. I won’t have time to visit Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knott’s Berry Farm, or any of the other amusement parks here.
I have to get back on the road. I’ve almost caught up with my schedule. I really want to see all the states before the middle of May.
Love,
Owney

Owney arrived at Tomiyasu School on Monday, October 4th. The children were surprised and excited about his arrival. I mailed him to Salt Lake City, Utah, on Tuesday, October 5th, right after school.
