Kentucky: Due 2/9
Rockholds, KY
2/7/00 Hi!
Owney visited in Kentucky on Monday. We had been out of school for two weeks due to snow and ice, so we were very worried that he would come to our school, and sit in the office alone while we were out.
We took him around to all the classes. Everyone was very interested in him and the Kindergarten kids asked about a million questions. Our principal visited with him, and posed for a picture with him. Several teachers donated things for him to take on his trip.
I took him to the post office on Monday afternoon, and mailed him on to Tennessee. He should be there now.
Thanks for including us in this project, we really enjoyed meeting Owney.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Carroll's Fourth Graders

2/11/00 Dear Journal,
I've finally arrived in Tennessee. The weather is great! It's been a
while since I've used those sunglasses. There's a lot of excited sixth
graders in this middle school classroom. Big kids and adults definitely
enjoy my visit, also! The students told me all about the TV special
that they watched where I was the star! I know it's not nice to brag,
but I must be a special animal! The girls all want to take me home.
The boys think I'm cool, also. The boys keep telling me that I just
missed the Titans season. I should have been here earlier. The
students read me reports of Tennessee. The kids in Mrs. Norris's
sixth grade English class are really nice. I'm really sad to leave, but
I'm off to Alabama tomorrow morning! Hope the weather stays nice!

Florida: Due 2/28
Tallahassee, FL
3/7/00 After a false start, Owney arrives in Florida.
South Carolina: Due 3/3
Audrey Geoffroy, Memminger Elementary School
3/14/00 Dear Journal,
My trip to Charleston, South Carolina was exciting. Ms. Geoffroy's class had just finished studying the post office so they knew all about my journey through the mail. First, I was put on the purple monster to
have my stamps cancelled. Then, I was sorted on the green monster and sent to the right zone. Next, I was put on a mail truck and delivered to Memminger Elementary School. I had lots of fun! I arrived at lunch time and got to go to Art class. I also got to visit students in Ms. Williams' class. After that, I participated in a brain booster lesson before my big party. Students ate chips and cookies, but I got doggy
treats! We took lots of fun pictures, but the teacher couldn't get them developed in time to give me some for my journal. She didn't want me to get further behind schedule!
The people in South Carolina sure were friendly. Charleston is a beautiful city on the coast of the state. The land there is flat and marshy with lots of
beautiful beaches. I learned that Spartina is the name of the marsh grass that serves as an estuary (nursery) to lots of wildlife. I can't wait to visit here again someday.
Love,
Owney
North Carolina: Due 3/8
Amy Shultz, Sardis Elementary, Monroe, NC
Owney arrived in North Carolina on a rainy Friday, March 17 just in time for St. Patrick's Day! But just in time to see all of the trees blooming beautifully!! He only got to spend a brief afternoon with the tudents. We celebrated Read Across America with a school assembly on the parking lot. Our class read for 4,000 minutes in five days!! Owney stayed until Monday afternoon to meet with Mr. Chris White. Mr. White is a writer for a local magazine called Railroad and Tourist Rail. He has been researching about
Owney and came across our web sight. Luckily Owney was due any day to visit us!! So Monday, Owney told Chris of his journeys so far this year and showed him all of his goodies in his box. An article will be published in their upcoming edition! Owney also got to watch the UNC Tarheels win their basketball game to reach the finals!! Our Principal Mrs. Stegall awarded Owney with a gold starfish pin which all of our teachers wear. (It is in honor of the story of the man who threw starfish back into the ocean. Even though he could not save them all he knew it made a difference to ones he
could save. Just as we teachers try to make a difference.)
Owney is on his way to Virginia. Not much farther to go!!
