Owney came to me Thursday, March 30. Owney arrived in our classroom and everyone was excited. We immediately
took him from the box and took him to the principal. Mr. Cavalier presented him with a Principal's Honor Roll button. Owney was silent as the button
was pinned on his ear, but Heather said a little "ouch" for him. He went to lunch, playground, gym and to as many children as we could fit in the schedule. He was quiet during the spelling test, and happy during lunch and playground. We put him in his box at the end of the day, and sent him on.
Many thanks

Dear Friends of Owney,
I arrived at Richey Elementary School in Wilmington, Delaware on a sunny and breezy day. My sunglasses sure came in handy today!
I was whizzed here by priority mail the next day after leaving my friends in Maryland. The United States Postal Service is still treating me like royalty!
The children met me at recess time. It was sure good to get out of that cramped box and play with all of the second graders at Richey Elementary.
Mr. Aultz would have taken my picture at Rehoboth Beach if I wasn't behind Schedule. I would have loved a romp in the sand and surf of Delaware!
I will help Mr. Aultz mail the post cards and then hop into my box for the next leg of my journey.
Sincerely,
Room 107, Richey Elementary School

Pennsylvania: Due 4/4
Johnstown, PA
4/13/00
Dear Friends of Owney,
I had an overnight rest stop in Johnstown. I arrived at St. Clement School in the late afternoon. I had to wait until the Fourth Graders finished their achievement tests before Mrs. Samo would take me out and introduce me to the class. We exchanged greetings, but before you knew it, the bell rang, the children went home, and I was alone with Mrs. Samo.
She let me plan the menu for my welcome party on Friday. I liked the idea of pretzels and potato chips manufactured in Berlin, PA, which is just over the mountain from Johnstown, and I thought the Pepsi bottled right in Johnstown was a great idea, too. Then Mrs. Samo told me we could have some fresh maple sugar cookies, since Meyersdale just celebrated the maple sugar festival last weekend. But my happiest moment came when she told me the Sweetest Town in the World, Hershey, PA, was just two hours away, and we could feast on Hershey's chocolate! Well, after that excitement, we headed for a night of introductions at her house. She has a dog and two cats, and they were very friendly.
Friday morning brought still more tests, with one last session after lunch. The students brought in their stuffed animals to keep me company while they worked. Then those happy students got to put away those number two pencils for good and party with me. I got so many hugs, and had so many pictures taken of me. I felt like Lassie! Maybe I'm just as famous by now, who knows? I was on television, too, after all. Anyway, the principal even came in to welcome me.
Everyone was fascinated with all my pins, my poncho, my Mardi Gras necklace (The girls loved the little gold babies on it!) and my pig snout. (Mrs. Samo really had to keep her eye on it; I think some boys in her room wanted to keep that!) At the end of the day, I got a pin from the Inclined Plane Visitors Center. Johnstown is famous for its world class inclined plane, and for the terrible floods that happened there.
Well, then I got a Hershey Kiss for the road, and we had to say goodby. I was packed up and put on my way to New York before you knew it. I just love meeting new people all the time! I'm glad to be a traveling dog.
Love,
Owney
New York: Due 4/10
Putnam Valley, NY
Owney arrived at Putnam Valley Elementary School on April 19, 2000 but we were on Easter Break. We greeted him today Tuesday April 25, 2000.
Hi friends, you should have seen the welcome they gave me here at Putnam Valley Elementary School. Mrs. Beyrer promised there would be pictures. When Mrs. Beyrer let me out of my box, she introduced me to the class mascot, Figment. Boy, what an imagination he has. As Mrs. Beyrer’s homeroom class came in, they all wanted to hold me and began asking questions about all my mementos. Mrs. Beyrer took me on a tour of the school while her class went to Art. I met the principal, Mr. Hallisey. Mrs. Beyrer also wanted me to met Mrs. Langdon. She is a first grade teacher there and she designed my new memento.
Check out the pictures.
Mrs. Beyrer’s math group had a test on fraction. I walked around checking out how the kids were doing. Allie and Emma looked like they were acing it. I’m glad I don’t have to do fractions.
The best part of day was when I met the whole team of students and teachers. Mrs. Beyrer works with 3 other teachers, Mrs. Pryor, Mrs. Byrnes and Mr. Smith. They call their program PBBS. We gathered in the hallway all 67 students and 4 teachers. Mrs. Beyrer introduced me to the group and read the class my story while I walked around visiting everybody. What a great place to get hugs!
Later in the afternoon, I learned about owls. Mrs. Beyrer’s reading group is reading There’s an Owl in My Shower by Jean Craighead George. I couldn’t believe how spotted owls could affect so many people. I highly recommend this book.
I peaked in on Mrs. Pryor’s reading group. They were in the computer lab doing some thing called a multi-media book report on a North American animal. I’m glad I don’t do computers either.
At the end of the day, I played a Math game with dominos with some of Mrs. Beyrer’s homeroom group.
They gathered around to say goodbye as Mrs. Beyrer got me ready for my trip to the Post Office. I’m on my way to Rhode Island. I hope they keep their promise to write so I can add to my journal.
