A few months later, Dave was on the porch swing when he heard a piano being played. He listened a while and reconized it to be the song 'Piano Dancer.' Whoever was playing, was playing it really well. But it sounded like it was coming from near by.
Dave got up, happy that he had gotten off his crutches yesterday, and walked over to the small fence that seperated his and Jewel's yards. He looked throught the open padio door and saw Jewel sitting at a white piano and was playing it. Dave watched her carfully. She had her eyes closed and was playing the piece by memory.
After she finished, Dave began to clap. Jewel looked up, startled. Then she smiled as she saw who was clapping. She got up from the piano and put her crutches under her. She walked out the padio doors, over to Dave.
"Hey, wazup?" she asked.
"Not too much. I see you got your cast off finally," said Dave, looking at her healing leg.
"Yup. I'm telling you, it felt so good to get that thing off. I never realized how ichy my leg could be," laughed Jewel.
"I heard the doctor wasn't to happy about what you did to your ankle," said Dave.
Jewel blushed. "I was just trying to play basketball. How'd I know I'd lose my balence and fall on my ankle?" asked Jewel.
"But now you're going to be on those crutches a lot longer now," smiled Dave.
"Speaking of crutches, you must be happy to finally be off yours," said Jewel.
"Yup. I got off them yesterday," said Dave. "How's Summer?"
Jewel smiled. "She's her best when her and Scott are together," she said.
Dave laughed. "He's barley home anymore. He spends almost every waking moment with Summer."
"Well, it's speeding up her recovering, that's for sure," said Jewel, shifting her weight on her crutches. Just then, a leaf, orange from the Octorber morning frost, came floating down and landed on Jewel's head. Dave reached up and gentaly took it off her head. They just looked at each other for a moment.
"Uh, Jewel. Are you going to the Halloween dance?" Dave asked un-easily, looking down at the ground.
"Well, I wasn't really planning to because of my ankle. But since when do I let an injury rule my life," shrugged Jewel. "Why?"
"Um, I don't kow. I thought maybe we could go together," mumbled Dave, shuffling his feet.
Jewel smiled. "Dave, are you asking me to the dance?" she teased.
Dave blushed. "I've never asked a girl out so I don't really know what to say," mumbled Dave.
Jewel smiled. "Well, I like the way you asked me. I'd love to go with you," she answered.
Dave looked into her eyes. "Great. I'll pick you up at 6:30, ok?" asked Dave, his eyes sparkling.
"Sounds good," said Jewel. Just then, Jewel's mom called her from inside the house. "I have to go. The master calls," she said, making a face. They laughed and said good-bye.
