LABEL WHORE Written By Mike Bernales Has anyone noticed the increase in Pilipino-owned clothing companies here in America? I attend a lot of community festivals and gatherings year after year and I have seen a tremendous amount of new brands, at these events. Hey, you might see these young and upstart newcomers, flaunt their wares on the runways in Europe or even fashion magazines someday. A few of these labels have also branched off into areas like accessories such backpacks, pendants, and other items. I think it's great to see the entrepreneurial spirit come off from these up-and-coming businesses, who are also Pilipino. What trips me out is some of the names of these clothing companies. At times I wonder if these businesses have a negative impact on our community. I mean, does it make me less of a Pilipino if I'm not wearing a t-shirt that questions or proclaims that I'm a truer Filipino than you? To me it seems like we are exploiting our culture. Don't get me wrong, I have no animosity towards these businesses. I just hope that our level of pride or culture isn't measured by these businesses. I salute them in their efforts to make a buck but I just hope that they imply nothing else. I don't have to prove my culture by wearing their clothes. Seeing a design that questions pride makes a unique statement on it's own. No one should be forced to buy these types of clothing for the sake of cultural identity or awareness. What happens when this type of marketing strategy gets played out? I mean, if we bought it solely for cultural identity, then everyone would have one, right? In light of the Pilipino WWII veterans plight for benefits, it would be great if the proceeds of these merchandise went towards their cause. Moreover, it would really show pride and community awareness, if it went to aid other causes in our community. I'll buy it, how about you all? REPLY
