Building a Webpage
Each form of communication has its advantages.
The internet is global in reach, and
it is more targeted on people
with shared interests, and it's useful for new innovative
ideas, as it was in the past when the internet was used to discuss new
scientific ideas, and it can be useful for discussing new ideas
for positive social change. Just remember that unless you get a reputation,
you'll probably reach less than a thousand people, but if those people are
in the right niche, such as scientists in a specific area, you can pack alot of
punch. As for getting a reputation, that's hard, I've gotten some professors
very interested in my ideas about using
the internet in education,
but that's uncommon.
The idea fighting a social revolution
non-violently is fairly new,
and so there are many innovative approaches to social change that are yet to be
discovered. The internet is great for getting those ideas out to
those people who are motivated to work for these changes. Also
it can be used to give people new ways of persuading others to
adopt a more humanitiarian perspective. A good example is the
article greed, which makes the point that
greed costs the rich, as well as the poor. Since the rich make most
of the rules, if they realize that fairness is a sound monetary
policy, they will change the rules to accomodate everyone's
self-interest. The internet is best used to
communicate new, INNOVATIVE ideas. George Lucas is a good
example. Most people enjoyed Star Wars etc. His attempts after
Return of the Jedi in innovations like interactive software were not
as popular, but if he had just stuck with convention, he wouldn't
have broken new ground in filmmaking. Have you ever seen those early
silent moovies. Every one was the same, a beautiful woman tied to
the train tracks by the villan. She gets saved at the last minute
by the hero. How often would people pay $4 a movie to see that over
and over?
Using the net to talk
about the same old stuff is a waste, people have already set
opinions on most things, UNLESS you talk about it from an unusual angle.
Use very colorful language and graphics that help make your point,
including backgrounds . You need data compression because the bigger the
image,
the longer your audience needs to wait to load your page. Windows 95
has some compression utilities on it. I also suggest you limit the
total size (in bites) of your images on a page. Also, don't expect
the internet to load your pictures faster in the near future, the
demand for space on the net is doubling every 100 days, which is
faster than they can lay down cable!
Once you have a gorgeous page, get it well positioned on the net.
Everything on your page should help make your
point, for example, red, black and the Jolly Roger says this is a
depressing
subject. When I start a page, sometimes I don't have all the
graphics I want, but if I'm getting a reasonable number of hits,
I'll add graphics as I find it on my CD's or the Net.
Finally as Abbie Hoffman said, "Never impose your language
on people you're trying to convince." Your page should be designed
to convince people, not explain in a way that has failed to
convince them 1,000 times before. You should start with the points
you want to make, then find a way to say it in a way your audience
will understand.
If you believe you're in the right, and also believe that other
human beings aren't too different from yourself, then all we need
to do is communicate to make the nessessary changes.
