Rogue Squadron

To put it plainly, the first Star Wars game for the Nintendo 64 was highly anticipated. However, many fans felt it fell short of expectations. The running around in third person, playing as the character "Dash", and the music didn't give the Star Wars feel. However, everyone who has played the game knows that the Battle of Hoth was awesome...

Hey, game developers aren't stupid. (Most of them aren't.) They heard the call loud and clear. Rogue Squadron took the best of Shadows of the Empire (the Battle of Hoth) and made a whole new game.

Graphics: Stunning. Although in many places the fogging makes it tough to see enemy fighters, the graphics of each ship are amazing. You can see little activity among the ground, and the game seems movie-esque. But wait until you try the RAM Expansion Pak. That makes it a lot better. You'll never want to go back. Believe me, it's worth buying it, not only for this game but for others too.

Sound Effects: Again, stunning. The sounds come straight from the movies, and it's great to hear the whistles of the TIE's flying by and the sound of your lasers smashing one to the ground. What's more, the whole game is in voicing! The wingme talk to each other, and you can pass the game see almost no text at all, although you can add the subtitles.

Storyline: Well, it's Star Wars, so you know the story's good. Well, actually, come to think of it, I remember Shadows of the Empire too...

Control: The control is good, if you think about it. It's really realistic, meaning that when you are going fast, you need to allow more space for your ship to turn, and using the braes help make sharper turns. Don't expect these babies to turn on a dime though.

Replay Value: You'll beat the game. Then you'll want to get all the bronze medals. Then the silver. See what I'm getting at?

Creativity: Pretty good, although creativity can only go so far under George Lucas' strict guidelines of what is and what isn't "Star Wars". The game is very much like a movie that you get to play in.

Length: The game sure is long enough. Even if you do beat the game in a couple days, you still need to go back and do it again and get better medals!

Music: Classic Star Wars. You can't possibly go wrong.

Difficulty: This is where the game falters. The learning curve is EXTREMELY steep. The game starts off at a pretty easy level, but at about the third level (Search for the Nonnah... arrrgh!) you'll have extreme difficuly not throwing the controller across the room.

Fun Factor: After you get good enough, you can sit back and enjoy shooting down TIE Interceptors, TIE Bombers, and miscellaneous other things.
