Edmonton Colliseum, January 23, 1998
All day I agonized, nearly collapsing when I saw the clip
of the show in Calgary the night before. I couldn't wait to
see that intensity up close. We got our seats a couple of
songs into Everclears set. They did an awesome sloppy,
but totally put together show. Ending with Santa Monica,
and Local God. The whole colliseum was a huge cloud
of anticipation, waiting for the wonderful moment when
the band walked on stage. After Everclear wished us
goodnight, a TwILiGhT ZoNe episode was played on
the screen--the dummy one. A nice touch. I didn't watch
the whole thing.. me and my friend were away during this time,
bragging to friends about our seats, and buying a whole lotta
stuff... posters.. t-shirts...stickers..
We waited at most 5 minutes after we got to our seats,
and then the lights dimmed. Everyone in the place started
screaming at once, and the feeling you got when Raine
walked on stage, singing the beginning of Automatic
Flowers (do doo, do do do..) was undescribable. Cheering
and Shouting, and Singing along, I watched one of my
all-time favourite bands of all time sing my favourite songs.
After AF was over, they started right in with Hope, and
then Superman's Dead, during which Raine asked
us to sing with him. During Car Crash, one of the first of many
short film clips was shown on the screen. This one was a view
from a car, speeding over the road.
The speakers above our heads had some sort of clown on a
trapeze bar painted on them or something, and every so
often they'd give out an eerie glow. During the story behind
Trapeze(I've heard it only once before--at the Alanis
Morisssette concert a few years ago), I nearly cried. And
nearly killed the girls sitting behind us, who every chance
they got, would scream out, "TAKE OFF YOUR SHIRT!!!"
*sigh*. I just turned around and told them to shut up.
The spotlight went out at some point during this time, and
Raine looked up at the lighting guy and asked him to turn
it back on. He was telling his friends a story.
They continued on through the set, getting more intense
and unbelievably good after every song. They did a piano
version of Julia, one of my favourite songs. I didn't like it
as much as the original, but who am I to complain??
Naveed was possibly one of the best songs sung that night,
during the quiet part of the song, Fox(the guy on both CD
covers, and shown repeatidly throughout the concert in
independant videos the band made specifically for this tour),
flashed on the screen, reading the poem that inspired Our
Lady Peace to name themselves Our Lady Peace. I don't
think I've ever heard a poem read with such feeling before.
It just sent shivers down my spine, and watching Raine up
there, looking like he was in complete and total angst, made
me want to watch the concert forever.
They ended off with an awesome version of The Beatles
"Dear Prudence", but you knew they were coming back.
As if everyone at the concert had made an agreement
before the show, we all started shouting OUR LADY PEACE
over and over again, the people in the stands stomping
their feet, and the people on the floor standing on their chairs.
The noise was defenaning. The band must get the greatest
feeling hearing that. They finally came back on, and sang
(I believe) 4am and Clumsy.
I've seen OLP in concert several times before; during the
Alanis Morissette tour, at the Dinwoodie last year, Headling
for EDGEfest, and now at the colliseum.. This has by far
been the best concert of theirs I've seen. Everything was
perfect, from the opening band, to the lighting, to the videos.
