Moonlight Arabesque: Taoist Role-playing in the Realm of Dreams

INTRODUCTION

Dreams are a collective psychic realm made real by those who dream. When the last sleeper awakens, so dreams cease to be. They stretch as far as the furthest mind and are hindered only my the depths of imagination. It is the realm of the subconscious, where you have no choice but to let go of your ego and let other forces take over, many of them being the other people who you are, whether you know it or not. But it's also a place where anything is possible, for the more aware you are that you are dreaming, the more lucid you are, the more control you have over dreams.

In Moonlight Arabesque, you take the role of a character who dwells in the shifting land of dreams. Through your character, you will learn things about yourself you never thought possible, for by stepping into his shoes you will depart from the daily shuffle and the patterns of life you have become so accustomed to and be given a chance to see "What if...", to take a look at things from a new perspctive.

THE TAO OF GAMING

The only thing we can be sure of in this life is uncertainty. From atomic physics to everyday conversations, we have no idea what is going to happen next. But this is good, for to know everything would mean stasis and boredom. Uncertainty keeps us on our toes. It keeps us striving and creating in an effort to make the world a better place. It keeps us alive.

The ancient Chinese recognized the spontenaity of things and modeled their lives around it. They reduced their desires and thus kept their disappointments to a mininum when tragedy struck. They learned to adapt to all situations before they arose by becoming like water -- taking the shape of the environment as it changed, keeping low to the ground and following it's contours.

This is the essence of Taoism, the ancient study of yin and yang and how they ineract. Yin is female, dark, mysterious and descending. Yang is male, bright, energetic, visible and rises toward heaven. They constantly flow into each other, becoming their own opposites and the result is the manifestation of all things. It is thought that yin is superior to yang, for where fire, a yang symbol, flashes brightly to heaven, it is in constant need of fuel and is extinguished quickly. Water, on the other hand, lasts forever. It flows to fill all things and will eventally wear down the hardest rock. You've never heard it called Yang-yin, now have you?

The Taoist seeks balance in all things, but to make up for the fierce, male power of yang, the yin must be embraced more warmly. In a world full of egos, hatred and desruction, we need more loss of self, thoughtful repose and yeilding. If you fight fire with fire, all you succeed in doing is burning down the forest, but if you fight fire with water, life might bloom that you never dreamed of. Lao-Tzu, long held as the founder of Taoism (but by no means the first) said, "know the masculine, keep to the feminine", that is, become like yin, think before you act, be small, humble yourself, and, eventually, all things will flow to you.

There's more, believe me. Much more. Stay tuned.
