Chapter 3

"Let’s go out to dinner," Annie said that evening. "I want Chinese." They were all over at Jennifer’s house deciding what to do.

"Yum," Zac said. "Now I want Chinese!"

"Ok," Taylor said. "We’ll go out for Chinese!"

"Isn’t he being so nice today?" Jennifer said to Annie and Zac.

"He’s being so well behaved," Annie said with a grin. "You’ve trained him well!"

"I’m not a dog," Taylor said, trying to hide his smile. "She didn’t train me."

"You know very well I did," Jennifer said, kissing him on the nose. "Let’s go."

"Who’s driving?" Annie asked.

"Not you," Taylor answered.

"Hey! I’m a good driver!" Annie exclaimed, jokingly defending herself.

Taylor grinned at her. "Sure."

"I only hit that one curb today!" she said.

"Who cares?" Jennifer said. "I’m hungry!"

"Ok. My car. I’m driving," Taylor told everyone.

"Whatever," Zac said.

They all went outside and piled into Taylor’s car.

When they arrived at the restaurant, it was surprisingly almost empty. Therefor, they got their table right away.

"Ok," Annie said, studying the menu. "I’m going to have….Chow Mien with Chicken Strips…a coke…won-tons….and….that’s all."

"No rice?" Jennifer asked.

"Eww!" Annie said. "I hate rice! No flavor!"

"You are too weird," Taylor said.

Zac would have said something, but his attention was averted elsewhere. She was there. In the same restaurant as him. The girl he’d seen on the way to the movies.

"Um," Zac said. "I have to use the bathroom. I’ll be right back." He had to go to her, something was calling him.

"Ok," Annie said. "Hurry back."

"I will," he said, only halfheartedly. He scooted over in the booth and stood up. He walked in the direction of where the bathrooms were, over towards where the girl had been.

"Hi," she said, coming up behind him.

"Hi," he said. He turned around to face her and was immediately lost in her eyes. They were a deep, smoky gray.

"I’m Keller," she said.

"Zac," he managed to say.

"I saw you sitting over there," she told him. "You’re cute."

"Thanks," he replied, swallowing around the lump that was forming in the back of his throat. There was nothing warm or friendly about her voice, it was cold and icy, and made him nervous, but he couldn’t force himself to leave.

"I_I’ve got to go," he finally managed to tell her.

"All right," she said. "I’ll see you later."

"Yeah," he said. He was still trapped in her gaze. She turned away from him, and suddenly he was free.

Silently he walked back to the table in a slight daze.

"Have fun?" Taylor asked.

"Huh?" Zac asked, for some reason afraid that they’d seen him talking to her.

"The bathroom?" Taylor said. "It was a joke?"

"Oh," he replied, relieved. "Yeah, the best time."

He looked over at Annie. She was giving him a strange look, like she knew. Of course, Annie didn’t know, but when you’re with a person long enough, you can tell when something is going on.
