Part 1/18
Joxer ran down the street eager to avoid his father, and another beating. He knew that his father was just looking for an excuse to hit him and the destruction of his favourite shield by Joxer provided him with the excuse.
"This wasn't how I imagined my birthday." Joxer thought to himself as he looked around for a place to hide a grin on his face as he discovered the perfect place. He was right in front of Ares' temple, the one place that his father would never look for him. Joxer himself had admitted that he never wanted to be a warrior a fact that angered his father. Joxer preferred to talk his way out of trouble inside of fighting, to the amazement of his brother Jett and his father.
Joxer quickly opened the doors of the temple and sneaked inside. The temple was lit by a single candle that had the effect of making the temple seem like the loneliest place on earth. Joxer wondered if the Gods ever got as lonely as mortals did.
(Did Ares yearn for someone to be his friend as much as he did? ) Joxer thought to himself, before dismissing the thought as a daydream. As if anyone let alone a God would ever want anything to do with him.
"What are you doing in my temple?" A voice asked sounding both amused and curious.
(My temple, that means that its Ares) Joxer thought before finding his voice.
"I thought it would be obvious, after all I'm not here for the conversation am I (?) I'm hiding from my father for a while, as soon as I'm sure he's left or drunk somewhere I'll leave." Joxer said, a part of his mind telling him to be careful, he was talking to a God. Nevertheless, Joxer ignored the warning, the Gods were like mortals in a way, they felt the same emotions and cried the same tears. With this in mind, it made it difficult to act amazed.
"If you're going to hang around you may as well eat with me, I’ve got nothing better to do for the moment so I’ll join you." Ares replied a look of amusement on his face, at the way the man, Joxer a part of his mind supplied was acting. Joxer was treating him like a normal man, something few people had done and Ares was surprised to discover that he liked it.
With a wave of his hand, Ares created a simple meal of fish, fruit, and bread with a jug of wine between them. Ares took a seat, motioning Joxer to do the same. Once the mortal had sat down Ares started the conversation.
"So why is your father looking for you?" Ares asked wondering what the boy had done to make his father angry. He knew that Joxer's father was a good warlord but he didn't know much about the family.
"Lets see, this time I broke a new shield that he had made. It was an accident. I fell on a cliff and the shield broke. I think my father would have preferred it if I had fallen rather than his precious shield." Joxer said a trace of anger and bitterness in his voice.
"Its not that important, I can always make another one for you then he won't have another reason to be angry at you." Ares said, getting the feeling that Joxer's father often hit him. For some reason it made him mad but Ares couldn't figure out why.
"Tell me a little about yourself?" Ares asked wanting to find as much out about the boy as possible.
"Lets see I'm seventeen and I have two brothers. We're triplets you see so most people mix us up. Jett is a little bloodthirsty but he's a great fighter. Jace is good at making clothes and gardening, although he enjoys cooking the most. I prefer talking my way out of fights if I can, my fighting skills are non-existent. I seem to be involved in an awful lot of fights. My father always said I have a knack for trouble. I tend to be by myself a lot for some reason despite being a triplet it gets lonely, know what I mean?" Joxer replied in between bites.
Ares nodded, understanding the feeling very well. Despite his large family there was no one who really cared for him, each one thinking that he was War, not realising that there was much more to him than that. The pair ate the rest of the meal in silence, both feeling that they had made a true friend that day.
Ten Years Later
Joxer looked around him, checking that no one had followed his movements, the last thing he needed right now was for someone to reveal his position and prevent him from completing his mission.
Opening the door to Ares’ temple in Sparta, Joxer walked inside, smiling as he realised that the decor hadn’t changed in the last ten years. Today was the tenth anniversary of the day that Joxer had first met Ares and the day that he was going to give himself to Ares.
“I’m here, my friend.” Joxer whispered into the apparently empty temple, knowing that Ares was watching through the familiar feeling of eyes on him. A laugh echoed around the room as a set of blue sparks signalled Ares’ appearance.
“So I see, did you have any trouble getting here?” Ares asked, genuinely curious about the answer.
“Not really, although I had to take the longer route and I’m pretty sure that Xena suspects something.” Joxer replied, knowing that Xena had wondered just why Joxer had disappeared every few months.
“I don’t think she would take the truth too well but I’m afraid we may have to tell them.” Ares stated imagining the look on her face when she discovered the truth.
Joxer walked through to Ares’ private chambers and quickly changed out of his “armour”. He hated having to wear it but knew that it was important to the disguise. As he changed into a cream silk shirt and his normal black leather pants, Joxer continued the conversation. “Why do I get the feeling that it’s a bad thing?”
"Probably because it is but enough about that. Do you want to practice?" Ares replied as Joxer walked back into the main room.
"It must be serious cos you're suggesting practice, normally you wait until I've at least eaten. Why don't I eat while you tell me the problem and we can forget practice." Joxer said as he sat down at the table, making it clear that he had already decided.
"I can see you've already decided for us, Jox. The problem is that a group of warrior priests are going to try and awake Dahork. We have to get rid of the problem but apparently we need Xena's help which means the bard will be coming along too.” Ares replied.
Part 2/18
"So Dahork's back, doesn't it seem more than a little unusual that there have been so many plans to get him back?" Joxer asked wondering if one of the Gods was working against them.
"Its possible that one of the Family is involved but I don't think Zeus would listen if I told him." Ares stated knowing that Zeus would ignore the suggestion if it came from him. Zeus tended to ignore those he couldn't understand, focusing instead on Hercules and the other mortal offspring he had fathered.
"Forget practice Jox, I can see you're too nervous. Just go to bed." Ares said, smiling as he watched Joxer shake himself awake. With no more than a wave in his direction, the mortal left to go into the bedroom eager to sleep.
With a thought Ares cleaned up the room and considered his plans. The next morning he was going to teleport Xena and the annoying bard to his temple and begin the discussion. Ares knew that his daughter wouldn't handle the truth too well but he no longer cared. The only person that mattered to him was Joxer, the man who had claimed his heart.
-------------
The sound of fighting nearby called Joxer from his dreams, making the man wake with a start. He was in a temple of Ares, who would be stupid enough to start a fight in the War Gods temple? Joxer wondered as he grabbed his sword and pulled on a pair of nearby leather pants.
Running into the main room, Joxer stopped short at the sight before him. Ares was arguing with Xena and Gabrielle but all three froze at his appearance. With a smile at Ares, Joxer walked past the two now silent women and sat down at the table.
Xena was staring at Joxer in amazement, had she just seen the man come, half naked out of Ares' private rooms? Was Joxer the latest of Ares' conquests? Xena asked herself as she looked over at Gabrielle. The bard was staring with her mouth wide open at Joxer who was making himself breakfast. The whole sight was wrong, Joxer was supposed to be fawning over her, Gabrielle thought in disgust.
(Feel like upsetting them a little Jox? Just follow me) Ares' voice said in Joxer's head, making the mortal grin in delight. He loved causing trouble and he knew that Xena would never suspect him.
"I see you're up, sorry for waking you. I did mean to come and get you but I've only just teleported them and you didn't get much sleep last night." Ares said ignoring Xena's thoughts and resisting the urge to blast Gabrielle to pieces. The concern in his voice caused Xena look at him in bewilderment.
"I'm okay Res, last night was just a bit exhausting." Joxer replied with a grin, guessing what Xena was thinking.
Ares sat down at the table smiling at his friend before taking a bite out of an apple. As much as he was enjoying the trouble they were causing he knew that Xena was getting impatient. The one thing he had learned was that an annoyed Xena was bad for everyone especially him.
"I guess its time to tell you the truth. The first thing is that I've known Joxer for ten years now, ever since the eve of his seventieth birthday. When Joxer turned twenty one I made him my champion." Ares said, remembering that day and the surprise on Joxer's face at the identity of his trainer.
Flashback
"You are a man like no other. No one has ever been as good a friend, as loyal, as heroic and noble as you. With this in mind I have just the position for you." Ares said as he called his sword to him. Making a small cut on Joxer's shoulder in the shape of a dagger, Ares continued, " I Ares the God of War, call on the Fates to recognise Joxer as my Champion." A
flash of light signalled the appearance of the three most feared ladies in Greece.
"So recognised." The three said as one, a smile on their faces, which caused Ares to start in alarm. It was generally a very bad thing when the Fates smiled at you either something bad was about to happen or they where planning something, both of which generally signalled trouble.
"Now that you are my Champion Joxer you will have to do as I ask at all times. The first matter is your training. At present your fighting skills leave a lot to be desired but I can do something about that." Ares said, shortly before a pale man with black hair appeared.
"This is Strife, who will have the job of training you to fight." Ares said pointing to the man. Joxer's eyes widened as he recognised the name of the God of Mischief.
End Flashback
Part 3/18
“You can’t be telling the truth, Joxer couldn’t fight his way out of a paper bag.” Gabrielle said in outrage, her eyes sparkling in anger.
“If that’s how you feel, how about a demonstration?” Joxer said, looking at Xena.
“Fine by me but Ares can’t interfere.” Xena replied, never taking her eyes off Joxer.
“That was kind of obvious.” Joxer replied with a mischievous grin at Ares.
The scene soon changed to the training grounds just outside the temple. A rack of weapons sitting on each side, waiting to be used. Joxer walked over to his normal weapons calmly picking up a staff, watching with a small grin as Xena did the same.
“Care to put on a few more clothes, Jox?” Ares drawled amused, over the actions of his friend who was ready to defend Ares. Ares was more than willing to admit that he didn’t want anyone looking at his Joxer. Not that Joxer knew about his feelings but hopefully that would all change.
“Can you get my black vest, Res? I wasn’t really thinking about clothes earlier.” Joxer replied, remembering how his main concern had been for Ares and his anger over people fighting in his friend’s temple.
With a thought, Joxer was dressed in a black shirt with black leather pants. Joxer could still remember the day that Strife had told him to only wear black as it disguised the blood best. Moving to the middle of the fighting ground, Joxer waited for Xena to join him.
The pair circled each other, each one looking for an opening. Xena lunged forward aiming for Joxer’s chest, intending to deliver a kick to the man as she landed but found herself kicking air. Joxer quickly jumped over the shocked Xena, directing a roundhouse kick at the woman as he landed.
The fight started in earnest as the pair traded blows, each one just shaking off the hits they received. Finally bored with the game Joxer decided to use some of the moves Strife had taught him. The God had been one of the best fighters Joxer had ever seen, often using his powers in the sparring sessions to help Joxer learn how to fight anyone including Gods.
Joxer moved fast, his mind blank as he started to fight back in earnest. He was like water, flowing ignoring the hits Xena returned. Within minutes it was clear that Joxer was winning. Xena had a number of cuts to her upper torso and some cracked ribs. Joxer had a couple of scratches on his arms and a bruise that was beginning to form on his back. With a quick roundhouse kick, followed by a kick to the back of the legs, Xena was on the floor unable to move.
“Do you yield?” Joxer asked the fallen woman, his voice betraying no emotion.
“I yield.” Xena replied, now realising that she knew nothing about the man that was supposedly her friend.
Joxer reached down to grab Xena’s hand and helped the warrior up with a smile. With a grin he wondered just how his new mission was going to affect his plan to tell Ares that he was in love with him.
-----
“I’ll just fix your injuries, Xena. We need you too much to allow you to be hurt before the mission starts.” Ares said as he flexed his power.
“Now that everyone knows the truth we will tell you the reason why you are here. Dahork is apparently going to return unless we can stop him. A group of Warrior priests are going to perform a ritual that will allow him to return. The ritual will take place just outside Athens but it can only take place under a full moon. Res, anything else?” Joxer asked, seeing that the women were trying to accept the fact that the Joxer they knew was not the real Joxer.
“Apparently there are some others that are important but you will met them during the journey. There are only six days until the ritual will be performed and the identity of the priests isn’t known yet.” Ares replied.
Joxer listened in silence, taking in all the details, considering the possible route they could take. If one of the Gods was involved they would have to stay off the main paths and they had to be prepared for anything. With a determined grin, Joxer decided that today was the day he would tell Ares that he loved him. If something went wrong and he died he would do so without ever revealing how he felt.
“We’ll look over the maps if that’s alright with you?” Xena stated looking at Ares and Joxer.
“That’s fine. The maps are in the library. Go through the main door, turn left and take the first door.” Joxer replied, his knowledge of the Temple’s private quarters convincing Xena that Joxer was intimately involved with Ares.
-------
As soon as they were alone, Ares flexed his power and transported them to the bathroom. He could see that Joxer’s muscles were beginning to stiffen and knew how much Joxer loved a bath.
Joxer undressed, a smile gracing his face as he felt Ares’ watching him. Was it possible that Ares felt something for him? Joxer asked himself as he stepped into the tub, which was filled with Jasmine petals and bubbles.
“Res, sit down.” Joxer said in a hurry, seeing that Ares was about to leave. “I’ve got something to tell you…”
“You can tell me anything, Jox. I’ll always be here for you.” Ares said, seeing the nervous expression in Joxer’s eyes.
“I love you, Res. I will understand if you don’t fell the same but I had to tell you.” Joxer whispered his confession.
Ares sat in silence, staring at Joxer an expression of amazement on his face. He gazed at Joxer in silence, an expression on the God’s face that Joxer had never seen before. Did Ares hate him? Joxer wondered aloud, his voice startling Ares into speaking.
“I could never hate you. You are everything to me, Jox. I love you and I will always love you.” Ares said, smiling feeling complete joy and happiness for the first time in his life. Moving slowly Ares moved his face closer to Joxer’s wanting to kiss the man he had loved for the past ten years.
Joxer realised this was the moment he had been waiting for as he felt Ares’ breath against his lips. Before their mouths could meet, a scream broke the silence……
Part 4/18
With a snarl Joxer moved his hands to grasp Ares’ face, kissing his God with a mix of anger, passion, desire and longing. The kiss was hard and passionate while being soft and shy. The two exchanged air as they kissed, neither wanting to break the kiss.
They parted regretfully, the need for air too great. Joxer moved away from Ares, determined not to look at Ares’ bruised lips. He knew that if he looked at Ares he would forget about everything but the two of them. As much as it appealed to him, something had obviously scared Gabrielle and whatever it was could be a danger to Ares.
Stepping out of the bath, Joxer pulled on the waiting black clothes and took his sword from its sheath. Running down the corridors towards the source of the scream, Joxer wondered what had alarmed the Amazon so much, knowing that the bard rarely let anyone see her fears.
“What’s got you so afraid? Did you discover a blemish?” Ares asked the frozen bard, who was standing outside one of the rooms.
With a growl Ares flexed his power and made Xena appear, knowing that as much as he hated the bard Xena would not go on the mission without her. He couldn’t believe that the spoilt brat had disrupted the moment he had been waiting for all his life.
“I…in…th-there.” Gabrielle stuttered out, relaxing into the Warrior Princesses embrace.
Joxer opened the door, adrenalin coursing through his veins. He stared in amusement at what had obviously terrified the Amazon Queen. Unable to hold his laughter in, Joxer released the bubbles of laughter that were desperate to escape.
“This is what had you so terrified?” Joxer managed to gasp through the laughter. Moving away from the doorway he let the others see inside the room.
The room was decorated in a mix of black and red, the two colours entwining in the middle of the room. In the middle of the room was a large Panther, lying on the floor, guarding the two occupants of the room. Lying asleep on the bed, were Cupid and Strife who had clearly finished an active bout of love making.
“Oh hi, dad, Jox. Not that I mind putting on a show but why are you all standing in the doorway of my bedroom?” Strife asked, opening one eye while curling his body protectively around Cupid.
“It seems that Gabby here couldn’t resist having a look around the house. She was supposed to be going to the War room but she clearly decided to have a look around first. Apparently the sight of you two scared the life out of her.” Ares replied, amusement in his voice.
“I guess that explains it. If you don’t mind I’ve got more important things to do than stand around here talking to you, like waking Cupie up.” Strife replied, clearly trying to get rid of them.
“That’s fine. We’ll see you later.” Joxer said as he closed the door, in a hurry knowing how impatient Strife was.
Part 5/18
“Why did Strife call you dad, Ares?” Xena questioned as the group moved into the main room. She wondered just how much Ares and Joxer had hidden from them.
“Can you please ask your idiot friend to stop from nosing around our home? I adopted Strife years ago since then he’s called me dad.” Ares stated, annoyed that he couldn’t just be alone with Joxer.
“Why don’t we go over the plan’s in here? I’m sure that Strife and Cupid will join us when they are ready.” Joxer said, eager to finish the plans and get Ares alone.
With a wave of his hand, Ares made the plans appear on the large table along with a couple of glasses of wine. On the table was a large map of Greece. Studying the map, Joxer considered the best possible route finally making a decision he pointed it out to the others, ignoring the looks of surprise on the two women’s faces.
“This appears to be the best route it may take a couple of extra hours but this way we can avoid the main routes and hopefully any traps. We’ll set out tomorrow at dawn.” Joxer said, studying the map with a careful eye.
“Sorry you’re leaving so soon Jox. I was going to ask if you wanted to help me with a couple of jobs.” Strife’s voice echoed in the main room, shortly before Strife appeared, his arms wrapped around Cupid’s waist.
(You see what I do, Cup) Strife sent to his love as he looked at Joxer and his father.
(Sure do. Glad to see they finally managed to say something. I thought I was going to have to take care of it) Cupid thought back, at the same time sent a message of congratulations to the pair, not saying anything out loud due to the women.
“I thought you were dead?” Gabrielle said, looking directly at Strife, anger rolling off her at not knowing about everything. Gabrielle hated it when she didn’t know everybody’s secrets.
“I got better. Anyone want to tell me why Blondie’s here?” Strife replied, addressing the room.
“They’re here because we need them so you’ll have to let them out of you’re plans for a little while.” Ares said, a smile appearing on his face when he remembered all the tricks they had played on the bard.
“There’s not much we can do until tomorrow so why doesn’t everyone go to bed. Xena you can have the room opposite ours.” Ares said, delighting in the look of hate, worry and disgust that appeared on the women’s faces when they realised that Joxer was going to sleep with Ares.
With that, Ares grabbed hold of Joxer’s hand and led the way into the bedroom. Once Joxer had stepped inside, Ares closed the door with a thought and pushed Joxer back against the door, his body pinning the mortal in place.
Ares descended on Joxer’s mouth, making the mortal groan as he felt Ares’ tongue lick his lips before begging for entry. In a haze of lust, he surrendered eager to feel Ares’ tongue inside his mouth. Their tongues duelled for a couple of minutes before the need to breathe caused Joxer to break away. He walked over to the bed covered in black silk sheets and pushed Ares down, so that the God was lying there panting with desire.
With a wicked grin Joxer removed his clothes before reaching for Ares black shirt, while he was undoing the buttons, Joxer noticed that his hands were trembling in a mix of nervousness and desire.
“As much as I would love you to undress me that would take too long.” Ares whispered into Joxer’s ear as he thought the clothes away. The pair groaned at the sudden skin on skin contact. In a swift move, Ares flipped the pair so that Joxer was lying beneath him. He reached out with one hand to coat his fingers with oil and slowly slid one finger inside Joxer.
Joxer moaned aloud with frustration, he needed more; he wanted to feel Ares inside him, completing him, owning him, loving him. He knew that Ares was just trying to make sure that Joxer’s first time wasn’t painful but Joxer knew that he wouldn’t be able to last much longer.
“Ares more please…..Ares…take..me!” Joxer shouted as he gripped the sheets.
Seeing his lover’s desperation, Ares oiled his cock before placing himself at Joxer’s entrance. As he sheathed himself in Joxer’s tight heat, he groaned feeling complete for the first time in his life. He had never felt anything so intense before. He started to move, each thrust hitting the special spot inside Joxer causing the mortal to scream, in the back of his mind Ares couldn’t help but think that Xena would definitely know that he was with Joxer now.
“Ares…..I’m coming…..I love you…Res!” Joxer shouted before coming over the black sheets. The muscles around Ares as Joxer came causing the God to come seconds later with a loud shout of “Joxer”.
With a thought, Ares cleaned the pair up as he moved Joxer so that the mortal was resting his head on Ares’ chest. Ares looked over at his beloved and saw that the mortal was asleep. The God smiled with the knowledge that he had worn out his lover. Ares closed his eyes ready to surrender to Morpheus, tightening his grip around Joxer as he did so.
Part 6/18
Joxer awoke to the feeling of Ares’ arms wrapped around him and smiled content to simply feel a sense of peace that he had never felt before. A frown appeared on his face when he remembered that today, the morning after he had revealed his feelings to Ares he had to leave. Would Ares be safe if one of the other Gods were really working against them?
“You’re thinking too much again, love. Everything will be fine, I’ve got Strife and Cupid to watch out for me.” Ares said, reading Joxer’s thoughts.
“I didn’t realise you were awake, babe. I can’t help but worry..I guess I need something to take my mind off it.” Joxer replied, raising his eyebrows suggestively.
“I’m sure I can help you with that.” Ares whispered into Joxer’s ear as he kissed the special spot below Joxer’s ear, causing the mortal to shiver. Turning, Joxer moved so that he was lying facing Ares.
He stroked Ares’ chest content to simply relax knowing that he had to leave soon. As if on cue there was a loud bang as Xena stomped into the room, her face set in a frown. When she caught sight of the two men, lying on the bed she stopped, her face expressed a mixture of amazement, confusion, and anger.
“What did you do to him Ares?” Xena said, her voice low with what Joxer assumed was anger.
“Nothing I didn’t want him to do. So I take it you’re here to drag me away. I’ll be ready in a couple of minutes. Why don’t you go in the temple and wait?” Joxer said, amused at the behaviour of the Warrior Princess but also angry at the assumption that Ares had done something wrong.
Xena left the room, her face showing her surprise at Joxer ordering her around. The lovers watched her go with a smile. Joxer gave Ares what was supposed to be a quick kiss. Ares however had other plans. The kiss was every bit as thrilling as their first and full of promise, the promise that they would be together soon.
“As much as I hate to say it. I have to get dressed, if I don’t leave now I never will.” Joxer said as he jumped out of bed and hunted for his clothes.
“Would that be so bad? We could spend the day in bed.” Ares replied, anger and despair in his voice. He didn’t want Joxer to leave when they had only just started their relationship.
“No it wouldn’t but we’ve got to save the world again which means that I have to go.” Joxer said as he put on his true armour, the black armour was made by Heph for him on the day he had been made Ares’ champion. He only ever wore it when defending his God, the rest of the time he had worn the armour of “Joxer the Mighty”, although it looked awful it did a good job of protecting him.
“I love you, Res and I’ll come back, I promise.” Joxer said as he pulled Ares into his arms, not wanting to let go until the last possible moment. Joxer looked up when he felt eyes on him, he found himself meeting the eyes of the shocked Warrior Princess and the angry bard.
“I love you too Jox, I’ll hold you to that.” Ares said in a low voice so that only Joxer heard him, the last thing he wanted was the annoying bard to write about what had happened.
Unnoticed by the pair, Xena had heard the whispered sentence. The fact that Ares had said that he loved Joxer caused her to wonder about how she had judged the God. Was it possible that Ares wasn’t as bad as everyone thought? Someone who clearly love so deeply couldn’t be as cruel as Ares was supposed to be, could they? Xena asked herself as she watched the lovers.
“Hey Jox, sorry to see you go, man. Hurry back will you the last thing we need is dad in a mood.” Cupid’s voice echoed through the room before the God of love appeared holding Strife’s hand.
“Don’t worry I’ll be back as soon as possible. Take care of him for me, please.” Joxer said his eyes on the pair, who nodded seriously understanding just how Joxer felt about being separated from his love. The pair could remember how much they had gone through when Strife had died.
With one last squeeze of Ares’ hand, Joxer walked out the temple, followed silently by the two women. As soon as he left, Ares vanished from the room to the bedroom, clutching the pillow that still carried Joxer’s scent.
Part 7/18
Determined not to break, Joxer walked along the road and away from Ares, every step taking him further away from his home. As he walked Joxer considered the mission, they would arrive at Athens in five days giving them a day to find the priests. Joxer had no qualms with killing people if the situation called for it, although he preferred to let people live. As Ares’ Champion, he worked to make his God proud of him and despite what people thought Ares was not about unnecessary killing.
As the small group walked in silence, Gabrielle shot looks at Joxer while at the same time opening and closing her mouth as if she wanted to talk to him. Despite her disgust at his relationship with Ares, Gabrielle’s natural curiosity was getting the better of her.
“Who are we meeting up with? Its not some of Ares’ friends is it?” Gabrielle asked, although it was clear that she had wanted to say something else.
“No idea, but we’re supposed to met them soon.” Joxer replied, quickening his pace his instincts telling him to move faster.
There was the glint of sunlight on metal seconds before the road was blocked by bandits carrying some of the best swords Joxer had ever seen. After a couple of seconds, Joxer was approached by two of the men. His mind went black as he practised the now familiar moves, soon dispatching his opponents. Looking over at his companions, he was pleased to see that they were managing to defend themselves. The fight was soon over and the group continued on their way.
“Joxer how could you kill them?” Gabrielle asked, disgust and hate in her voice.
“Did you see their swords, and the way they fought? They were not normal bandits; I think they were sent to stop us from reaching Athens, well probably to stop you. They probably didn’t know that I am Ares’ Champion. The only ones who know are you two, Strife, Cupid, the Fates, Dite and Heph.” Joxer replied.
“You think some of the Gods are involved don’t you, Joxer?” Xena asked seeing the way he was acting.
“Yeah but I don’t know who so we should be careful.” Joxer replied before lapsing into silence, trying not to think about Ares.
The group walked in silence until it became too dark to continue on their way. While Gabrielle set up camp, Joxer and Xena quickly patrolled the area not taking any chances. Joxer stopped at the sound of footsteps nearby, moving back into the undergrowth he carefully listened for any clues as to the identity of the strangers.
“Any idea why we’re heading this way, Herc?” Joxer heard Iolaus say his voice curious.
“Dite said that we had to meet someone here but knowing her it could be anyone.” Herc replied as the two men spotted Joxer waiting for them.
Part 8/18
“Hi Joxer, interesting armour. Where did you get it from?” Iolaus asked amazed at the fine armour.
“You didn’t steal it from someone did you?” Hercules asked, making Joxer roll his eyes in annoyance. It was just like the demi-god to be suspicious of everyone and to make judgements before thinking.
“Its good to see you. The armour goes with my job and was a present. Come and met the others, I’m sure they’ll be happy to see you.” Joxer said as he led the way back to the camp.
As the small group arrived Gabrielle quickly stood and ran over to Iolaus, she had a crush on the blonde hunter that wasn’t exactly a secret. The bard had ignored all the hints Iolaus had sent telling her that he was not interested.
“Its great to see you again Iolaus, I’ve got so much to tell you. Why don’t you sit by me and we can talk”. Gabrielle said eagerly ignoring the glare Iolaus directed at her.
“I think I’ll sit by Joxer, I haven’t seen him for a while.” Iolaus replied smiling at the understanding in Joxer’s eyes.
As Joxer opened his mouth to reply he felt the unmistakeable feeling of a God nearby but not one he recognised. Taking out his sword he pointed it at the direction of the unknown God, causing his companions to stare at him in amazement.
“There is no need for that, Joxer. I just came to make sure that you weren't hurt. Although I don’t act like it I love Ares and I can see that he truly cares for you. It would destroy him if you were hurt.” Hera’s majestic voice echoed in the clearing shortly before she appeared.
Hercules quickly made his way to the Queen of the Gods angry over all the pain he felt she had caused him. Before he could reach her, Joxer pointed his sword at the demi-god sensing the truth of her words. Hercules froze in surprise at the fact that Joxer was holding a sword against him.
“It’s nice to meet you, ma’am.” Joxer said as he slightly lowered his head.
“I thought I should warn you that the Fates have said that not all of your group will survive this trip. So take care Joxer of Corinth.” Hera said as she disappeared from view.
“Want to tell us anything, Joxer?” Iolaus asked as he watched Joxer return his sword to its scabbard.
“I am Ares’ Champion, I have been since I was 21 years old and I’m his lover. When I disappear for months at a time I’m normally doing fulfilling my duties as Champion.” Joxer said looking at the two men.
“I thought I recognised the armour, you saved me when I got into that argument in Athens, right?” Iolaus said recalling the incident two years previous.
“Its possible I did stop a little brawl in Athens in which some idiot by the name of Serain had decided to massacre a group of men to Ares.” Joxer replied as he unrolled his pack and lay down, eager to sleep and dream of Ares.
The rest of the small group soon followed suit, Joxer lay awake listening to the sounds of his friends snoring, remembering the wonderful night he had with Ares. As he fell into sleep he felt someone touch his shoulder, opening his eyes Joxer found himself looking at Hephaistos.
“Not that I mind but what are you doing here?” Joxer asked the God of the forge.
“I heard that the bandits you fought had some unusual swords. I remembered that I gave the last set of swords that I made to Hermes and I figured you could do with a hand. By the way, you need to talk to Ares, he’s not doing to well.” Hephaistos said kindly.
“What’s wrong with him?” Joxer asked worried that his lover was ill.
“He hasn’t moved from his room since you left for Athens. From the way Cupid and Dite are acting they don’t think he’ll move until you come back, so hurry up. The last thing I want is for my brother to pine away for you.” Hephaistos replied remembering the state of Ares when he had called in on the war god.
“I’ll be as fast as possible. I’ve got to sleep now or I won’t be able to travel tomorrow, so I’ll see you later.” Joxer said, before smiling at the God as he left.
“Ares God of War hear my prayer. I thank you for helping me survive another day, may you keep my aim true and protect my loved ones. I promise I’ll be back soon and I always keep my promises to you. I miss you so much my love and I’m closer to discovering who is working with Dahark. I’ll see you soon Res, goodnight.” Joxer whispered into the night as he adopted the traditional prayer pose. Unnoticed by Joxer, Iolaus listened to the prayer wondering just how much he had missed about his friend.
Part 9/18
Ares smiled as he heard Joxer’s prayer obviously his lover hated the separation as much as he did. Hopefully they would be able to be together soon until then he would have to endure the pain.
With a groan, Ares moved from the bed he had occupied all day and transported himself into the cave of the Fates. He had a feeling that they knew more about the mission than they were saying. Ares would get the information at any cost, the more information he had the safer it would be for Joxer.
“Why do you seek us, War God?” The Fates said as they continued threading the tapestry.
“I want to know about the plot to awake Dahork. Will the travellers survive?” Ares asked in a quiet voice.
“The tapestry is incomplete.” Atropos said her voice making it clear that she was bored.
“The child of Zeus will survive.” Lachesis said with a brief look at Ares.
“As will the Warrior Princess and her Amazon.” Clotho said while she was spinning the thread into the great tapestry.
‘What was it about the fates and mysteries?’ Ares wondered as he transported to his temple, inspiration hitting him on how he could secure Joxer’s safety. Just how was he supposed to get to the golden apples without his mother noticing? I might have to resort to asking her.’ Ares muttered to himself as he sat down at the lonely table, counting the hours until his mother would be awake.
********
Joxer awoke to the feeling of eyes on him, opening one eye he looked around realising that the only person awake was Iolaus. Stretching he quickly moved away from the camp towards a nearby stream. Striping, Joxer walked into the cool water shivering slightly when it touched his hot skin. He washed quickly knowing that Iolaus was waiting to talk.
“What’s bothering you, Iolaus?” Joxer asked gently as he sat down opposite the blonde hunter.
“I’m just realising how little I know about you. Why don’t you tell me about Ares?” Iolaus replied his voice quiet not wanting the others to awake before and spoil his chance to know the real Joxer.
“Ares is Ares. He loves his children and has a massive ability to love. Yes, he is the God of War but he is so much more than that. He controls the wars making sure that they result in growth and change, without Ares the world would become stagnant. He loves to garden and talks to all his plants. He is like me in a lot of ways, both of us are ignored or hated by our families.” Joxer said his voice happy as he thought of his love.
“I met him ten years ago when he let me hide in his temple from my father. Until my eighteenth birthday, we met in secret mostly talking about our families and what happened that day. Sometimes we didn’t see each other for months then we would spend every day together for weeks. When I left home at 18 he let me live in his private quarters. He taught me a few moves mainly to protect me from all the trouble I got into. We used to go out dancing and just spent time together. Whenever we sent out Res would have to be disguised so that no one noticed him.” Joxer said remembering the fun they had together.
“This doesn’t sound like the Ares I know.” Iolaus said remembering everything he had thought about the God and everything Hercules had told him.
“That’s because most people just see the God of War not Ares. Is there anything else you want to know?” Joxer said seeing that his friend was genuinely interested.
“How did you become Ares’ Champion?” Iolaus asked wondering why Ares had picked his friend out of all the warlords.
“It was on my 21st birthday, the night before we had gone to Sparta and celebrated with Dite and Heph. Ares asked me to go to into the temple and told me that he would like me to become his champion. I accepted and he gave me his mark, its on my shoulder. When told me that my trainer was going to be Strife I was amazed. We trained every day for years sometimes I would train with Ares or Strife and sometimes with one of the priests. The day I was formally introduced as Ares Champion was on my 24th birthday, Ares felt that I was ready. Since then I’ve defended my God, when I disappear I’m normally performing my duties as Champion. One of my main missions was to keep an eye on Xena and Gabrielle, mainly because Ares didn’t want anything happening to his only mortal daughter.” Joxer said, letting Iolaus absorb the information as he woke the rest of the group.
As soon as everyone was awake the group continued on their way in silence. Xena and Gabrielle led the way followed by Hercules, who was throwing glares at Iolaus. Iolaus and Joxer walked behind the group talking silently about what had happened since they had last seen each other, neither one wanted to be around the others too much. Iolaus couldn’t believe the way Hercules, Xena and Gabrielle were treating Joxer just because he had kept a secret, personally Iolaus could understand why Joxer wanted to keep the information secret. Iolaus couldn’t help but wonder how many times Joxer had saved their lives he was also amazed at how Joxer had taken the insults the others had thrown his way. Joxer was tired of the way he was being treated but he wasn’t going to let them stop him from completing his mission and returning to Ares. The only one who was truly his friend was clearly Iolaus, the hunter had accepted what he had been told and simply wanted to know the real Joxer.
Part 10/18
The group of heroes walked on through the night determined to reach Athens as soon as possible, that way they could all go their separate ways. They had just arrived at the outskirts of a small settlement when a snowstorm stopped them from continuing on their way.
This convinced Joxer that one of the Gods was working against them, there was no other reason why their would be a snow storm in the middle of the summer. Ignoring everyone, Joxer made his way towards the small inn and booked three rooms. That way he would be able to get away from the annoying group for at least the night.
Throwing a key to Iolaus, he smiled at the blonde hunter in thanks. Joxer knew that Iolaus would have to hear one of Hercules’ lectures because of the friendship that they shared. As much as he pitied his friend, Joxer wasn’t going to hang around any longer than he had too. Giving the last key to Xena he quickly retreated to his room.
‘Finally peace and quiet.’ Joxer thought to himself as he closed the door behind him. At least he would be able to sleep without the glares from Hercules, the look of betrayal in Gabrielle’s eyes and the anger in Xena’s. Undressing Joxer quickly lay down on the bed, loving the feel of the soft mattress beneath him.
As he was about to close his eyes, a flash of sparks signalled the appearance of a God. Looking up Joxer threw away the covers and ran to Ares. He quickly kissed the God, letting his love know just how much he hated the separation.
“Its so good to see you. I’ve missed you so much.” Joxer said as he undressed Ares, not caring about the fact that he was ripping the clothes, just wanting to feel Ares.
Ares pushed the Joxer onto the bed, so the man was on his hands and knees, while scooping up some of oil with his fingers. Coating his index finger, the he slid it into Joxer’s cleft he started rubbing the oil spread gently around his entrance, feeling the tiny shudders that passed through his love. Joxer moaned as the slick finger caressed sensitive skin, then thrust back against the tormenting hand. Probing the small pucker with more determination, Ares pressed inwards delighting in Joxer’s low moan.
Watching himself finger-fuck the perfect round ass, Ares groaned with desire and need. He pulled out and slid two fingers in, scissoring them to stretch his love then searched for the small nub deep in the hot channel.
"Oh Gods . . . please . . . I need you inside me right now!" Joxer moaned through the haze of desire.
His words were interrupted as Ares grabbed his hips, using his hands to spread the perfect cheeks he'd been caressing, then plunged into his love’s waiting eager body.
Joxer closed his eyes as a jolt of pain hit before opening them and uttering four words, “make love to me”.
Joxer thrust his hips against Ares’ as Ares pounded into him, in the desire to claim his mate. Joxer’s cock rubbed against the mattress, providing a delicious friction that countered Ares’ movements. Ares felt the orgasm rumble in the pit of his belly, radiating out to every part of his body as the hard cock drove into his ass, pushing him farther and farther towards the edge of sanity.
Ares thrust in and out of Joxer's body --- fingers gripping the warm skin --- trying to get deeper and closer with every thrust. His hands skimmed along the lithe back, across broad shoulders, and down strong arms, locking his fingers with Joxer’s. He angled his strokes to hit the younger man's prostate, a whispered "oh, yes, love." encouraging him. Leaning down, he licked the young man's shoulder until he found the start of his shoulder and bit his lover marking him, claiming him.
"Mine." Ares snarled the word into the heated room.
"I’m Yours” Joxer whispered passionately.
Ares felt Joxer shudder as his orgasm began and the muscles in his ass clenched deliciously, making the Ares come inside him with a shout of “Mine”. Joxer shouted “Ares” once before coming into the mattress. With a thought the wet patch disappeared and the two fell asleep, their hands entwined, exhausted from their lovemaking.
Part 11/18
Joxer’s eyes flew open as he heard the door creaking open, he found himself staring into the appalled eyes of Gabrielle. It seemed that the bard found the sight of him and Ares sleeping together horrifying. Joxer wasn’t surprised at Gabrielle’s reaction, as the bard had never tried to understand the Gods instead, she insisted that the world would be better without them.
“I’ll be down in a minute.” Joxer whispered to the frozen bard, feeling Ares grip him tightly, he wondered just how he was going to get out of bed.
Gabrielle closed the door and disappeared either to tell the others of what she had seen or to try to repress the memory. Joxer blew gently on Ares’ ear knowing that the God was particularly sensitive there.
“Ares love, its time to get up. I have to leave and I’d like to kiss you goodbye before I go.” Joxer whispered into the Gods ear, smiling when he felt Ares relax his hold.
”I don’t want to get up. Do you have to leave?” Ares said sadly.
“Yeah, I have to save the world again. But it will all be over by in four days.” Joxer replied.
With a wave of his hand, Ares dressed Joxer and himself. Taking out a necklace out of his pocket, he looked at Joxer nervously. He opened his hand and showed the necklace to Joxer who gasped at the beautiful piece of jewellery. The necklace was silver with the letters A and J forever engraved on the back of the pendant.
Joxer lowered his head to let Ares fasten the necklace around his neck. Once it was fastened Joxer straightened, the necklace felt like it belonged there. Opening the pendant Joxer found a picture of Ares smiling on the inside.
“I hope you like it. This way you’ll have a picture of me with you.” Ares said as he lifted Joxer’s hand and kissed it.
“Its wonderful, love. I’ll have to go now or they’ll come looking for me.” Joxer said as he let go of Ares’ hand.
“I’ll walk down with you.” Ares replied, grabbing hold of Joxer’s hand.
Hand in hand, the couple walked downstairs were the small group of heroes were waiting. At the sight of the couple, holding hands Hercules and Gabrielle glared and looked away. Iolaus simply smiled before winking at Joxer. It was Xena’ reaction that startled the pair she walked over to them.
“Its good to see you’re happy, Joxer. If you ever hurt him Ares, I’ll kill you. Don’t forget that I know where the hinds blood dagger is.” Xena said regretting the way she had treated Joxer.
“Don’t worry I won’t hurt him.” Ares said sincerely looking Xena in the eyes.
Joxer gave Ares a last kiss, wrapping his arms around Ares’ neck. With a moan, the pair separated. Joxer wiped away the tears that had fallen from his eyes and walked out of the door and away from Ares. The rest of the group followed, Hercules glaring one last time at Ares shortly before the war god disappeared through a haze of sparks.
***********
“Mother, I have a favour to ask of you.” Ares said as he approached his mother who was sitting down eating sweetcakes.
“Ask but I may not grant it.” Hera replied, wondering why her son had come to her.
”Can I have one of your golden apples to give Joxer immortality?” Ares said, sure that his mother would refuse his request.
“Do you love this man?” Hera asked already knowing the answer but wanting to hear it from his lips.
”Yes, more than you know. He is my heart and soul, he completes me.” Ares replied.
“As much as I would like to grant your request Zeus has forbidden me from doing so.” Hera said, hating the look of sorrow in her son’s eyes.
“Do you know why?” Ares asked wanting to go to his father and demand an explanation.
“He will not say.” Hera said shying from Ares’ gaze.
Ares teleported to the bedroom in his Spartan temple. Once there he started destroying the room, sending flashes of power towards the statues as he destroyed them they appeared again.
“What’s wrong, dad?” Cupid asked wondering what had his father so angry and hurt.
“Zeus.” Ares managed to say before breaking down in tears.
Cupid mentally sighed, wondering what his grandfather had done this time. Zeus seemed to delight in causing pain for his father, never caring about how much he hurt his Godly son as long as Hercules was happy. Moving towards his father who was lying on the bed crying hysterically, Cupid did the only thing he could think of. He held his father while he cried, knowing that there was nothing he could say to help his father with his pain.

Part 12/18
Two days later Joxer was worried about Ares, he hadn’t seen his lover since the night at the inn. Was Ares ill and no one had told him? Joxer did the only thing he could think off, he called for Strife. He had been friends with the God for years and he hoped that his friend might be able to help him.
“”Strife, I need your help.” Joxer whispered not wanting to wake his companions who had finally gone to sleep.
“Hey Jox.” Strife said as he appeared in his usual flash of sparks.
“What’s happened to Ares? I told you to look after him.” Joxer said a mix of anger and concern in his voice.
“Don’t worry he’s alright now. Zeus did something to upset him and he’s been in his room for the past two days. He was going to come and see ya but a big war broke out.” Strife said. Knowing how worried his friend was.
“You promise he’s okay.” Joxer said, knowing that Strife always kept his promises.
“I promise that he’s as good as he’s going to be without you.” Strife replied.
“Keep an eye on him.” Joxer said as he lay down to sleep, his mind eased a little.
The next morning Joxer awoke to the feeling of feathers on his stomach. Shocked he opened his eyes to see Bliss on his stomach. He wondered who had lost the young God this time he knew how good Bliss was at getting in trouble.
“Hi Jox, you make grandfather Ares happy? He sad but you make him happy.” Bliss said smiling at his friend.
“I’ll make him happy. Who was looking after you this time?” Joxer said, wondering who was going to incur Cupid’s wrath as the love god was a little over protective of his son.
“Eos but she looked away.” Bliss replied grinning in a way that reminded him of Strife.
“I’ve got to wake the others. You stay here, okay?” Joxer said as he lifted the young god to sit on the blanket.
“`Kay.” Bliss replied watching as Joxer walked away.
Once everyone was awake, Gabrielle started cooking breakfast, unnoticed by anyone, Bliss placed his hand over Joxer’s cup changing the contents. Mission completed, Bliss gave Joxer one last hug and disappeared.
“Why was Bliss here?” Hercules asked suspiciously once the God had disappeared.
“He came to see me, Cupid’s going to be angry when he finds that Eos lost him again.” Joxer replied taking a drink from his cup.
“So what are we going to do now?” Iolaus asked wondering what the plan was now that they had arrived at Athens.
“We find the priests of Dahork and stop them.” Joxer said with a smile as he stood.
“Great plan you have there, Jox.” Gabrielle said sarcastically.
The group lapsed into silence as they walked the few minutes to Athens. Once they reached the city the group split up. Xena and Iolaus went to search the temples, Gabrielle and Hercules went to see the magistrate while Joxer searched the rest of the city.
Part 13/18
Joxer smiled cruelly as he recognised the man in front of him, it was the same man he had dismissed from Ares’ service for his senseless killing. Despite what everyone thought, the warlords of Ares were only allowed to kill the people that were on Hades’ list.
“Nice to see you too, Lucien. Oh you remember me, I can’t tell you how happy that makes me. Don’t try to escape because I’ll kill you if you try and I’m sure Ares can convince Hades to let him torture you for a while.” Joxer said smiling when he saw the man’s look of fear.
Using the shortcuts and alleys Joxer managed to get Lucien out of the city without anyone noticing. He just knew that Lucien was involved in the plot to awaken Dahork, he knew it with a ferocity that surprised him.
When he reached the clearing, Joxer found the four heroes waiting. Joxer let go of his prisoner, kicking him to the middle of the small group absently noticing the blood that was falling from Lucien’s mouth.
“What have you done to this poor man?” Gabrielle’s annoying voice echoed in the clearing.
Joxer ignored her and stared at the terrified Lucien. The anger, rage and hatred in Joxer’s eyes made Xena stop in shock, in that moment she could see that Jett’s bloodthirsty rage wasn’t that far below the surface, obviously Joxer had the same deadly abilities and anger as his brother. At that moment, Xena gulped hard, feeling sorry for the stranger who was going to be on the receiving end of Joxer’s anger.
Placing his bag on the floor, Joxer grinned in triumph when he finally grasped the vial. He had carried it around with him for years never bothering to get rid of it, positive that it would come in useful someday. It had been a little present from Strife he hadn’t asked how Strife had gotten hold of it, having a feeling that he was better not knowing.
“This is Lucien, you could say we’re old friends. Lucien knows about what’s going to happen tomorrow. I’m going to find out what he knows, one way or another. This little potion was a present and will cause whoever drinks it to say the complete truth.” Joxer said as he removed the gag Lucien’s mouth.
Watching Lucien for a second he considered just how he was going to get the man to drink the potion. With a shrug he decided the old method would probably work, Joxer tightly held Lucien’s nose, pouring the liquid into the man’s mouth when he instinctively opened it to breathe.
Lucien swallowed the liquid without a thought, his body reacting to stop him from choking, as soon as he swallowed it Lucien paled realising what had happened.
“Hi Lucien, first I’ll give you some easy questions.” Joxer said smiling cruelly ignoring the gaping looks from the others.
“Who are your parents?” Joxer asked already knowing the answer.
“My father is Zeus and my mother is Leia.” Lucien replied his face changing to anger when he realised what he said, he had broken his promise never to reveal his father.
“Where and when are you going to try and awake Dahork?” Joxer asked wanting to know so he could finish this mission and return to Ares.
“In the cave ten minutes from here at dawn.” Lucien replied hating that he was telling the truth.
Iolaus interrupted Joxer’s interrogation to ask the question that was foremost in his mind.
“How do you know Joxer?” Iolaus said curiosity getting the better of him.
“He was at Ares’ temple when I started my training as a Warrior. I did everything to be the best of Ares’ warlords, I was so desperate for Ares to notice me but he never did, he only ever looked at his Jox. I approached Ares offering my body to him, almost begging but he turned me away. Instead of spending the night with me he went to Joxer’s room.” Lucien spat out.
Hating the way Lucien was describing his love, Joxer did the only thing he could think of and hit Lucien on the head with his sword hilt. Lucien fell to the floor with a bang, Joxer turned towards the other four a small smile on his face at the fact that he would soon be with Ares.
“So now we know what’s going to happen now for the details. We’ll have to be at the cave at least an hour before they are going to start. That way we can make sure there are no traps and we can save the sacrifice. From what Res said there has to be a pure sacrifice, do you know if anyone went missing in Athens recently.” Joxer said, an idea forming in his mind.
“Yeah one of the Priestess of Hestia disappeared yesterday according to the magistrate.” Hercules replied before falling back into an angry silence.
“She’s probably the sacrifice. We have to get her out of there then we can worry about the priests. There will be around twenty, we’ll handle them while you make sure that she gets put, okay Iolaus?” Joxer said, carefully going over the plan in his mind.
“Sure, why don’t we go to sleep then, I’ll take the first watch and you can take second, Jox?” Iolaus replied ignoring the glare Hercules sent at him because he was talking to Joxer. Joxer was his friend and he was not going to let anyone stop him talking to his friend.
Unwanted Truths
Part 14/18
Iolaus tensed as he heard someone approaching, taking his sword from its scabbard he turned to met the threat. The threat was Hercules, the man who until three days ago he had considered to be his best friend.
“How can you be friends with Joxer after what he did?” Hercules asked angrily.
“Like we would have believed him if he had told the truth. He’s done nothing wrong, I’m honoured to call him my friend. If you took the time to talk to him you’d realise that he’s a great guy.” Iolaus said before turning away from Hercules letting the other man know that the conversation was over.
The sound of clapping could be heard in the clearing, turning Iolaus stared in amazement. He turned to find the Goddess of Discord grinning and smiling, presumably over the way he had treated Hercules.
“Hi, you’re not going to cause trouble are you? I don’t want to fight someone as beautiful as you.” Iolaus said with a flirtatious smile at the Goddess.
“I just wanted to make sure that Joxer’s alright. So you think I’m beautiful, you’re the first man to say so.” Eris said winking at the hunter.
“I can’t believe that no one’s told you how beautiful you are. After we’ve finished all this do you want to spend some time together, Eris?” Iolaus stated hoping that she wouldn’t laugh at him.
“I’d like that, Iolaus. If you don’t mind I’ll stand watch with you.” She replied reaching for her dagger, while shyly taking his hand.
“I’d be honoured.” Iolaus replied, smiling as he gripped her hand.
**********
Joxer walked towards the edge of the camp, staring at Iolaus passionately kissing Eris. He had never in his wildest dreams thought about them as a couple but judging from the smiles on their faces when they finally parted they were in love.
“So I take it that there’s been no trouble.” Joxer said only just managing to hold in his laughter when the couple jumped apart.
“Nice to see you too Jox.” Iolaus said sarcastically, ignoring the blush on his face.
“I just came to make sure you were okay. Ares asked me to keep an eye on you.” Eris replied smiling when she remembered the way her brother had asked, she had never seen Ares so worried and nervous.
“I’ll take over the watch, if you want to sleep or something.” Joxer said, ignoring the glare from Iolaus and the way Eris blushed.
The couple shared one last kiss before Eris disappeared in a flash of sparks. Joxer turned to Iolaus wanting to make sure that he wasn’t going to hurt her but stopped when he found his friend grinning like a maniac.
“Go get some sleep, we’ve got to save the world tomorrow. You can see her soon.” Joxer said, as he pushed Iolaus towards the waiting bed.
As soon as he was alone, Joxer took the necklace from under his shirt and opened the pendant. Looking at the picture of Ares he stifled the tears that threatened to spill and ran his fingers over the picture.
“I’ll see you soon, love.” Joxer said as he kissed the picture and place it back in its rightful place, by his heart. Joxer straightened and kept his ears open for danger, at the same time counting the minutes until he would be back with Ares.
Part 15/18
Joxer quickly awoke the sleeping heroes wanting to get this mission completed As soon as possible. As soon as everyone was awake and reasonably alert he told the others the plan one last time to make sure that they all knew their jobs.
“Any questions?” Joxer asked impatiently, while ignoring the muffled cries of Lucien.
“Lets just get going.” Iolaus replied eager to get it finished with so he could see Eris, looking up he glared when he saw Joxer smirk.
The small group made their way to the cave, each one taking note of the unnatural silence. Joxer motioned for the others to go inside while he took a quick last look around. Satisfied that the way was clear he went inside the cave.
The cave had obviously been prepared for the ritual, the walls were decorated with what looked runes and pictures of destruction. The main theme seemed to be darkness falling and bring with it death.
“Iolaus, Hercules search the corridor to the left in case the sacrifice is around, but be careful there might be some priests waiting.” Joxer whispered before turning to Xena and Gabrielle.
“Gabrielle, why don’t you take the right corridor while Xena and I wait here for the group to arrive.” Joxer said, knowing that he could trust the warrior princess to fight beside him.
The group parted, each one determined to stop the ritual before it could start. The sound of voices caused Joxer to look around for a place to hide. Spying two large rocks, he quickly crawled behind one motioning Xena to hide behind the other.
“Any idea when He’s going to arrive?” The first man said, his voice carrying into the cave.
“Soon, have you got the priestess?” A woman replied, her voice cold.
“She’s under guard inside.” A second man replied as the group of Warrior priests walked inside.
The priests were dressed completely in black; their robes covered their heads hiding their faces. Joxer noticed that each one carried the same swords as the bandits that had ambushed them. The priests quickly lit a number of candles; stopping when blue sparks appeared signalling the arrival of a God.
Joxer stared at the God in amazement it was Apollo. He wondered just why the God had joined forces with Dahork. Did Apollo want his family to die and for humanity to suffer? Joxer wondered to himself as he readied himself to attack.
Hercules walked into the main room and chaos erupted. It was clear by his presence and Iolaus’ absence that the sacrifice had been saved but Joxer knew that unless they defeated the priests it would be for nought.
Joxer quickly moved towards the priests and the shocked God, a part of his mind registering that Xena was copying him. All thoughts flew from his mind as a man lunged at him with his sword drawn, Joxer quickly moved to the side bring his sword down to slice the man’s hand off. ‘I’ll have to tell Heph thanks again for the sword.’ Joxer thought as he noticed a group of around fifteen men enter the cave, each one had a maniacal gleam in their eyes.
Gabrielle and Iolaus appeared, quickly joining in the fray. The heroes fought determinedly, each one ignoring the hits they received, knowing that they had to win for the sake of the world. Iolaus moved to fight at Joxer’s side while Gabrielle moved to Xena’s. Hercules was managing well by himself, not using a sword.
Joxer took a quick look around, noticing that the fight seemed to be in their favour. The original twenty warrior priests had been reduced to only six but there was still the matter of Apollo who was fighting against Iolaus and Hercules, who were working as a team.
As he stabbed the warrior in front of him, Joxer could hear the screams of Gabrielle and Xena. Then there was a sharp pain in his back and side; it felt like he was burning. Joxer brought his hand to his side, and stared at the blood covering his hand in shock.
The world started to spin, as Joxer fell backwards onto the alter, his blood falling onto the floor. He smiled as he saw that they had won, all of the priests were dead and Apollo had teleported away, presumably to hide.
Joxer opened his eyes as he felt someone touch his face, he found himself staring into Iolaus’ worried face. Joxer grimaced as he tried to smile, a part of his mind telling him to close his eyes and surrender to the darkness.
“Keep your eyes open, Joxer. We’re going to get you help.” Iolaus repeated under his breath, while tears fell from his eyes.
“Iolaus, tell Ares that I love him and will always love him.” Joxer gasped out, ignoring the blood that was falling from his mouth. Closing his eyes, Joxer surrender to the darkness that called to him.
“NO!” Ares’ scream echoed in the small cave as the War God appeared in a flash of sparks just as Joxer’s heart stopped beating. Walking over to his beloved’s body, Ares picked him up and gently rocked him, not noticing the wail of despair he uttered.
Xena moved forward towards Ares, the sight before her causing her to cry. She could finally she the love Ares felt for Joxer and wanted to help her father at the same time knowing that she couldn’t.
She stopped dead when Ares looked at her with unseeing eyes, snarling at the intrusion. In a flash Ares had disappeared as had Joxer’s body. The small group of heroes looked at each other in shock, each one devastated at the death. Iolaus ignored the others and walked out of the cave, falling to the floor in tears.
Part 16/18
On Olympus Cupid looked at Strife and cried when they felt Ares’ scream while his heart broke. They both knew that Ares was never going to recover from the pain but also knew that they could do nothing to help him.
“Why Grandfather Ares cry?” Bliss’ voice echoed in the temple causing Cupid to look at his son in confusion.
“Joxer died and it made Ares sad.” Strife replied through his tears.
“Jox not dead.” Bliss said, causing his father to look at him in pain.
“I know it hurts but he is dead.” Cupid said, wondering if his son just didn’t want to believe it.
“He had golden apple, so he not dead.” Bliss replied determinedly.
“What do you mean, Bliss?” Strife questioned hope building.
“I gave him an apple to make grandfather Ares happy.” Bliss replied, seemingly oblivious to the smiles of joy crossing the adults faces.
Cupid left the temple in a flash of sparks, reappearing in his father’s temple where he found Ares rocking Joxer’s body crying the whole time.
“Dad, listen to me carefully. Joxer’s not dead, Bliss gave him one of Hera’s apples so he’s immortal.” Cupid said, gently not wanting to alarm his father.
“Don’t lie to me, he’s dead.” Ares replied crying.
“Bliss why don’t you tell grandfather Ares what you told me.” Strife said as he appeared in the room holding Bliss.
“Jox not dead. He had golden apple, so he not dead.” Bliss said, looking at his grandfather.
Ares looked at his grandson and saw that Bliss was telling the truth. Taking the sword from Joxer’s back he stared in shock as the cut healed. As Joxer gasped, Ares moved to hold his lover in a tight embrace, while wiping the tears from his face.
“What’s wrong, love?” Joxer asked when he looked up to find Ares had been crying.
“You died, Jox. It’s all my fault.” Ares said before breaking into tears once again.
“Hush love, its not your fault. I love you and I’m sorry.” Joxer said hating the pain in Ares’ voice.
“Why aren’t I dead?” Joxer asked Cupid, knowing that Ares was too upset to answer.
“Bliss gave you one of the golden apples so you’re immortal. You can still get hurt but you won’t die.” Cupid said seriously, knowing that Joxer needed an explanation.
“We’ll see you later.” Strife said as the three Gods flashed out of the temple.
“Its alright, Res. I’m here and I’m not going to leave you.” Joxer said as he kissed away Ares’ tears.
The couple held onto each other as they cried, Joxer due to all the pain he had caused his lover and Ares because he had lost Joxer. The tears were also ones of happiness as they would be able to be together forever.
Part 17/18
The feeling of someone running their hands over him caused Ares to wake with a start, looking up he found staring into Joxer’s eyes that shone with love and desire. Ares reached up to run his fingers up Joxer’s sides, wanting to feel for himself that Joxer was alive.
“Nice to see you’re awake.” Joxer whispered as he kissed his way down Ares’ body, ignoring the now hard cock that screamed for attention.
“Please, love…” Ares said, desperate to feel Joxer’s warmth on him.
“Turn over, babe.” Joxer answered, standing so that Ares could move.
Ares eagerly moved on all fours, just wanting to feel Joxer inside him. With a thought he prepared himself, the oil dripping from his puckered opening. He shivered when he felt Joxer grasp his hips, instinctively arching into the touch.
Joxer looked at the sight before him and groaned, the mere sight of Ares lying there waiting for him was almost enough to make him come. Reaching for the oil that lay next to the bed, he prepared his impatient cock.
Gripping his lover’s hips, Joxer thrust inside the small opening. The warmth and the tightness was almost his undoing, he had to bite his lip to stop himself from thrusting his cock further inside.
“Move Joxer!” Ares said, needing to feel Joxer inside him, possessing him, loving him.
That was all, Joxer needed, he withdrew so that just the tip of his cock was inside Ares before slamming back inside. With each thrust, Ares arched his body upwards meeting Joxer’s thrusts eagerly. With one hand, Joxer reached for Ares’ cock, pumping in time with his thrusts.
Minutes later, Ares could feel the orgasm building inside him. The feeling of Joxer thrusting inside him and Joxer’s hand on his cock was too much. With a growl he came, coating Joxer’s hand with his come.
Joxer thrust inside one last time before he came, the tightening of Ares’ muscles drawing, pulling ever last drop of his come from his body. As he came, Joxer bit down into Ares’ neck, almost drawing blood.
The pair fell back onto the bed, Ares groaning in disappointment when Joxer withdrew. Joxer moved so that he was spooning Ares, feeling content to simply spend eternity like this. Ares started laughing quietly, causing Joxer to look up in shock.
“What a way to wake up. You can wake me like that more often Jox. As much as I hate to say this we’ve got to move. Zeus will probably want to see you and there’s the little matter of our getting married.” Ares said happily.
“Why you asking me to marry you?” Joxer replied, amused.
“Yeah, will you marry me?” Ares said, turning so that he was facing Joxer.
“Of course. So what now?” Joxer said, not really wanting to move.
“Now we have to get out of bed and speak to the others. Everyone thinks your dead apart from Cupid, Strife and Bliss that is.” Ares said as he stood, dressing himself with a thought.
“After we tell everyone that I’m not dead we need to see Hera and Zeus.” Joxer said, as Ares pulled him out of the bed, dressing him in black pants and a red shirt.
“Why do you want to see them?” Ares asked as he took Joxer’s hand and led the way into the main room.
“Apollo was the one working with Dahork.” Joxer answered seeing the glimmer of understanding in Ares’ eyes.
“Any idea why?” Ares said, wondering why his brother had turned against them.
“Nope but we need to talk to them.” Joxer said.
With a flash the couple disappeared from the war temple, reappearing in Zeus’ study on Olympus. Zeus looked shocked to say the least, privately wondering how Joxer was alive. Hera was entirely different, walking over to the couple and hugging Joxer, surprising everyone including herself.
“What are you doing here?” Zeus asked Joxer confusion in his voice.
“Long story short, I’m immortal but we came to see you about Apollo.” Joxer answered not hiding the hate he felt for Zeus.
“What about Apollo?” Hera asked, seeing that Joxer didn’t want to talk to Zeus.
”He was working with Dahork but I don’t know why. After we’ve dealt with him, I want you to tell me why you wouldn’t allow Hera to make me immortal.” Joxer said looking at Zeus.
“I couldn’t the prophecy wouldn’t allow it.” Zeus replied seeing the hatred his son and Joxer felt for him.
“What prophecy?” Ares asked the question that was on everyone’s mind.
“When War finds love with the innocent,
Discord will find her soulmate,
The heaven’s shall tremble,
When War loses his true love,
But all is not lost for from child springs life,
The innocent will return from Hades’ domain
The children of War and Innocence,
Will unite the four who are nine,
When the Chosen One dies,
Four Souls brought together by pain,
Shall bring peace to Olympus.” Zeus replied, reciting the prophecy from memory, not looking at the couple.
“Okay I can understand why you did it but what about Apollo?” Joxer said, knowing that Ares was to angry to speak.
“Apollo shall be confined to his temple until the day peace is brought to Olympus.” Zeus replied, as he sent Apollo to his home on Olympus placing shields on the doors.
Part 18/18
“Mother can you marry Joxer and I?” Ares asked, wanting to let everyone know of his love for the man at his side.
“Of course. The ceremony will take place tomorrow to give you time to prepare.” Hera replied smiling at the relief on Ares’ face.
“Thank you.” Joxer said, looking at Hera.
“We have to go.” Ares said to his parents gripping Joxer’s hand and teleporting from the room.
The couple reappeared in the small temple of Ares in Athens, they watched unseen by mortal eyes as Iolaus approached the alter followed by Xena, Hercules and finally Gabrielle. Iolaus and Xena had tear tacks on their faces while Hercules looked guilty. Gabrielle showed no expression, not even a trace of sadness at Joxer’s supposed death.
“Ares, I know you probably don’t want to here from me of all people, but I’m sorry father. I’m so sorry I didn’t protect him.” Xena whispered looking at the alter.
“It’s alright, Xena. I’m not dead.” Joxer’s voice echoed as Ares made himself and Joxer visible.
“What happened, Jox? You were dead, I saw it happen myself?” Iolaus said in disbelief.
“I was dead. Bliss had given me a golden apple earlier so I healed.” Joxer said, before gripping his friend in a tight hug.
“I’m alright but we need to talk alone.” Joxer whispered into the hunter’s ear as he moved away.
“It’s really good to see you Joxer, and you too father.” Xena said, delighting in the look of shock on Ares’ face.
“Its good to see you too, daughter. Would you like to come to our wedding?” Ares said, addressing his question to the four.
“Sure, I’ll come.” Iolaus replied still trying to accept Joxer’s return from the dead.
”I’m not going. I’m not going to ever set foot on Olympus.” Hercules said, his tone making it clear that he won’t be budged.
“I’d be honoured.” Xena said, happy that she would be able to know her father.
“I won’t be coming. I’m going back home to see my family.” Gabrielle said without emotion.
“I’ll teleport you to Olympus now and you can stay in our home.” Ares said to Xena and Iolaus. In a flash of sparks, the four disappeared from the temple and reappeared in the main room of Ares’ home.
“I’m going to practice for a while…Want to join me, Xena?” Ares said realising that his lover needed to speak to Iolaus in private.
“Okay. See you later.” Xena said as she followed Ares from the room.
*****************
“How do you feel about Eris?” Joxer said looking Iolaus in the eyes. From the prophecy, he had guessed that his friend was her soulmate but he wasn’t going to let anyone hurt her.
“I love her, when I’m with her I feel whole.” Iolaus said, jumping when he heard Eris.
“I love you too, Iolaus. But if you ever hurt me I will kill you.” Eris said smiling.
“Will you marry me, Eris?” Iolaus asked looking her in the eyes.
Joxer let out a breath he hadn’t realised he was holding, judging by the love in their eyes they would spend eternity together. He quickly left the room as the couple started a passionate kiss.
“Want to come back to my place?” Eris asked the hunter who was still gasping for breath.
“Yes.” Iolaus replied, reaching out to hold her hand.
The couple flashed out of the room while engaged in another passionate kiss.
***********
“Jox, you are coming with me.” Strife said as Joxer walked into the training room to watch Ares and Xena practicing.
“What do you mean, I’m coming with you?” Joxer asked worried.
“Its tradition, you have to spend the night before your marriage apart.” Strife replied, grinning at the look of dismay on Joxer’s face.
“Think of it this way, after tonight you spend every night with dad.” Strife said seeing how upset his friend was.
“Fine, I’ll come with you but I don’t like it.” Joxer said as he grabbed hold of Ares who was walking towards him.
“What’s wrong, love?” Ares asked concerned at how upset Joxer was.
“I have to spend the night at Strife and Cupid’s place because of tradition.” Joxer replied, pouting slightly.
“Its just one night, love. Just think after tonight we can spend eternity holding each other.” Ares said with a smile.
Joxer put his arms around Ares’, pulling him into a passionate kiss. All thoughts of their audience faded as the couple kissed, each one putting all their love into the kiss. The pair devoured each other until a cough from Xena drew them apart. Looking at her, Joxer scowled, looking remarkably like Ares when the war god was angry.
Joxer awoke the next morning to find, Bliss sitting on his stomach. For some reason the young God seemed to like using him as a pillow. Gently touching the young God’s head he tried to wake Bliss up.
“Hi, Jox. You marry grandfather Ares today?” Bliss said as he opened his eyes.
“Yes, I’m marrying Ares today. Come on little one, I need to get up.” Joxer said as he tapped Bliss’ arm.
As soon as Bliss moved he stood up and walked towards the bathroom, all the time thinking to himself that today he would marry Ares.
*************
Four hours later, Joxer fidgeted for the tenth time in as many minutes, Strife simply grinned at his friend’s nerves, remembering how nervous he had been when he married Cupid.
“Calm down Jox, we’re about to begin.” Strife said, seconds before the sound of harp music filled the air.
Joxer walked down the aisle accompanied by a grinning Cupid. as he approached the centre of the room, Joxer caught sight of Aphrodite crying what he hoped were tears of happiness. As he reached the alter were Ares stood waiting he smiled at the clearly nervous Ares, who looked as worrying shade of white. Next to Ares stood Xena who was dressed completely in black, wearing an emblem of Ares around her neck.
Joxer looked over at Iolaus who quite frankly looked terrified, the hunter’s look of fear soon changed to one of love as Eris walked down the aisle escorted by a happy Strife. Joxer gave her a brief grin before focusing all his attention on the waiting Hera.
“Who here gives this man Joxer of Corinth to marriage to Ares God of War?” Hera asked, looking at Cupid.
“I, Cupid God of Love.” Cupid answered, happily. Maybe now his father was getting married he would lighten up, Cupid thought absently.
“Who gives Ares God of War for marriage to Joxer of Corinth?” Hera asked this time looking at Xena.
“I, Xena.” Xena replied, wondering just what she was supposed to say, Aphrodite was supposed to tell her before hand but the Goddess had ended up sharing stories about Joxer and Ares instead.
“This gold cord symbolises the union of your souls, by agreeing to marriage you are committing yourself completely to your partner.” Hera said as she tied the cord around the couple’s waist.
“Drink, Joxer.” Hera ordered as she presented Joxer with a glass of wine.
As Joxer swallowed the cool liquid, he felt energy and heat coursing through his body, as the ambrosia took effect. Joxer swayed slightly as he tried to adapt to the heady feeling of changing from an Immortal to a God.
“I present to you, Ares God of War and his husband Joxer God of Innocence.” Hera said happily, smiling at the pair before moving over to Eris and Iolaus.
“Who here gives this mortal Iolaus to marriage to Eris Goddess of Discord?” Hera asked, looking at Xena.
I, Xena.” Xena replied, at the same time smiling as she imagined the look on Gabrielle’s face when she heard the news.
“Who gives Eris Goddess of Discord for marriage to the mortal Iolaus?” Hera asked this time looking at Strife.
“I, Strife God of Mischief.” Strife answered, smirking, he had never thought he’d see the day his mother would marry.
Seeing the impatient look on her daughter’s face, Hera decided to hurry the wedding along before Eris lost her temper. Picking up the goblet of wine, standing on the table she handed it to Iolaus.
“Drink Iolaus.” Hera said, smiling reassuringly.
Iolaus drank and felt heat burning through his body as he changed from a mortal to a God. The gift of Godhood shocked him to say the least he had expected to be simply made Immortal.
“I present to you, Eris Goddess of Discord and her husband Iolaus God of Truth.” Hera said.
As one, the four newlyweds moved down from the platform and walked over to their friends. As they walked, people offered congratulations, most people only saying it out of courtesy. Iolaus could tell that most people were simply relieved that War and Discord were married in the hope that they would calm down.
The End.
