Chapter 13

“Bye, Jess! Call me when you’re all settled in!” Lauren called as Jessica drove off with the last of her stuff.

What was she going to do? There were very few ads in the paper looking for a roommate this late in the year. She had called most of them, but no one wanted a two-year-old boy, not that she blamed them. Most were college students, and a child in the apartment would make studying rather difficult, to say the least.

However, she had found two apartments that were in her price range. Neither was in the best area of town, but they’d have to do.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. ‘Nick’s daily visit,’ she thought as she stood up. Sure enough, it was Nick. “Danny is asleep right now,” she said.

“That’s good because I wanted to talk to you,” Nick said, leading her into the living room.

“Okay,” she said as soon as she was comfortably seated on the sofa. “What do you want to talk to me about?”

“You’re never going to find a good apartment that you alone can afford,” Nick stated.

“I know that, but you can’t just keep paying half the rent,” Lauren replied.

“I have a better suggestion.”

“I’m afraid to ask. What might that be?”

“Take Danny and move in with me.”

Lauren laughed bitterly. “Nick, are you crazy? No! No way! Absolutely not!”

“Why not? Think about it, Lauren. I have a huge house that could easily accommodate the three of us. You wouldn’t even have to worry about rent. Danny could live with both his parents.”

“Nick, I can’t accept that offer. It’s really sweet of you, but-“

Nick interrupted her and continued listing advantages. “Danny wouldn’t have to be in daycare. I could watch him while you’re at work. He and I would both love it!”

“But-“

“I’m not going to give up on this, Lauren. You can’t afford to live by yourself.”

“Let me think about it and talk to Danny.”

“All right.” Nick smiled. If she talked to Danny, he was fairly confident she would be moving it. Danny would almost definitely want to do it.

“Danny, honey,” Lauren said to her son after Nick left.

“Yeah, Mom?” he replied.

“I was talking with your daddy today,” she began. “He wants you and me to go live with him, but I didn’t know if you wanted-“

Danny cut her off. “Live with Daddy? YAY!”

“You want to?” Lauren said softly. “All right, then. I guess we’ll move in with him.”
