“Meg, it’s Matt. Did Nick call you?”
“Ugh, dammit!” she shouted.
“Okay…apparently not?”
“I thought you were him. I was in the shower and I got out to answer the phone. That’s the second time I jumped for the phone this morning to find that it wasn’t him. So anyway, he hasn’t called. He better call soon, though, because he said he was only here for two weeks.”
“Come on, Meg, you met him the night before last. It’s ten o’clock in the morning on day two. According to the three day rule, the second day is prime calling time, and if he doesn’t call tonight, then you still have tomorrow,” Matt informed her.
“You have this all worked out, don’t you?”
“I don’t. Whoever came up with the three day rule has it all worked out.”
“By the way, what happened to your ‘I’ve sworn off guys’ idea?”
“Shut up. Nick changed that. Now, can I go so I can finish my shower?”
“Yeah, sure. Call me back if he calls.”
“I will.” Hanging up, she laughed to herself. Matt was more like a female friend than any of her actual female friends. He was the only one she really talked about guys with, usually to ask him for advice. Even with his advice, though, she had never really been good with the opposite sex. She hadn’t had a steady boyfriend in almost a year. She’d gone on a few dates, but never any second dates with people. Usually that was her fault, though. She was very particular about guys she dated.
She went back into the bathroom and finished her shower. While she was drying off, the phone began to ring again. Ignoring it, she finished drying her hair. It was probably her mother or something.
The machine picked it up. She listened to her roommate’s voice. “Hey, you’ve reached the answering machine of Liz and Maggie. We’re probably out studying at the library…okay, more likely out partying, but it doesn’t matter. Leave us your name and number and maybe we’ll call you back!”
“Meg, it’s Nick. I guess you’re not home. I was just wondering – “
As soon as she heard his voice, she flew out of the bathroom and picked up the phone, stopping him mid-sentence. “Hey, Nick. Sorry. I was just drying my hair.”
“Oh, sorry. I didn’t mean to pull you away from that.”
“No, it’s fine. I’m done. What’s up?”
“Nothing much. I was wondering if you wanted to maybe go out to a movie tonight or something.”
“I’d love that,” she said enthusiastically, even though she had a paper due Friday.
“And we could go out for coffee…er, wait, you work at a coffee shop so you probably wouldn’t like that…for ice cream afterwards.”
“That would be great.” Finishing her paper could wait until tomorrow. It wasn’t like she’d actually end up working on it if she stayed home tonight. She always ended up putting homework off.
“I’ll pick you up around six-forty-five. Is that okay?”
“Sure!”
“Alright. I guess I’ll see you tonight, then.”
After saying goodbye, she hung up the phone and grinned. She was going out tonight, and maybe this would actually be a good date! She quickly called Matt back and told him what happened.
She went to her room to pick out a cute outfit and turned on her radio. There was a Backstreet Boys song playing. She liked them, so she turned it up a little bit and began to sing along. “But we are two worlds apart. I can’t reach to your heart when you say I want it that way.” Wow, that voice sounded a lot like Nick’s. She really needed to get him out of her mind.
