Chapter 3

Meg threw on a light black sweater duster over her black tank top and khakis and then finished putting on her makeup. It suddenly occurred to her that she never wore makeup. Since when had she started really caring about what someone thought of how she looked? A voice in her head answered that question. ‘Since a guy as cute and sweet as Nick asked you on a date. Since for once you are actually going on a date with a guy you like, a guy you could possibly have feelings for. Since when you were around this guy, you actually felt the fireworks everyone talks about. Since he really seems to like you, too.’ And the funny part was, she could come up with a thousand other reasons why, but she chose not to.

Those were all good answers. As she continued to think about them, there was a knock on the door. She quickly snapped out of her thoughts and rushed to open it. It was only her roommate, Liz, though. “Dude, what is with you, Maggie?” Liz laughed.

“What do you mean?”

“What do you mean, what do I mean? You’re all flushed. You’re wearing makeup. You’re dressed up. I mean, I know you have this date tonight, but you never get all dolled up for a date!”

“Well, I really like this guy.”

“What’s his name?”

“Nick.” Before Liz could reply, there was another knock at the door. “That should be him. See you later, Liz!” As Liz smiled and waved goodbye, she opened the door and slipped out.

“Hey, you look…great,” Nick stated sincerely.

“Thanks, so do you,” she replied, flashing him a flirtatious smile. Wow, since when had she been able to do anything flirty? This was just a weird night, she supposed.

He offered his arm and led her outside to his car. “What do you wanna go see?”

“I don’t know. Is there anything good playing? I haven’t seen any good commercials for movies lately.”

“I’m not sure. I didn’t check the papers. I suppose that would have made sense, huh?”

“Yeah, but oh, well.”

“I have an idea. Do you wanna rent a movie and go back to my sister’s dorm room? She and her roommate are out partying for the night, and they’re crashing at a friend’s house, so they wouldn’t be there to bother us,” he suggested.

“That sounds cool.”

“Uh, which way is the video store?”

She directed him to Blockbuster, and a few minutes later they were in the store picking out a movie. Nick, being a guy, wanted an action movie, and Meg wanted a chick flick, so they compromised. “Armageddon. That has both parts to it,” Meg stated.

“Sounds good to me. Let’s get it and go,” Nick agreed.

They checked out and then went back to BJ’s dorm room. “So this is where you’re staying, huh? Where do you find room in here? It’s so small!” Meg exclaimed.

“I sleep on the floor on this pile of blankets here,” he replied, kicking a quilt laying at his feet. “It’s actually really comfy. The quilt is soft, and the carpet on the floor is somewhat padded. And besides, I sleep really deep, so it doesn’t matter what I sleep on once I actually fall asleep.”

“Should we start the movie?”

“I think so. Do you want something to drink? We have Coke and Mountain Dew and Sprite.”

“I’ll take a Coke, please.”

He handed her the can and then sat down next to her. A few minutes into the movie, he cautiously put his arm around her, and in response, she leaned her head on his shoulder. Mmm, he smelled really good. He was really warm, too, and so huggable… Blocking him out, she tried to concentrate on the television.
